Chapter 83: Left Alone With the Third Dark Lord

The morning turned into noon and then noon into evening. They didn’t stop the entire day for any break and neither did they got to see a single glimpse of the sun throughout the entire day.

Instead, the further they traveled, the more humid and foggy their surroundings became.

It was only when it was near dusk and they needed a place to rest for the night, did they stopped.

She climbed out of the carriage and found the three lords already waiting there for her.

"We should look around and see if there’s any place where we can take shelter. Damian, you stay here with her, Kenric and I’ll ho and look around." Valerius ordered his second brother who seemed to be ready to protest but then remained silent when he noticed his hard gaze.

"Stay here with him, we will return soon." He said while turning his attention to Annalise who nodded her head in understanding.

She watched as Valerius and Kenric rode their horses in different directions as they went to search for a shelter.

The ire silence of their surroundings had been bugging her for a while and as she looked around the area, she noticed just how weird everything seemed. There wasn’t wind blowing, no birds or crickets chirping, and no animals seen wandering around. The only thing present around them were dead trees and the dense fog.

Yep! Dead trees. That was the only word she could think of to describe the trees that seemed completely lifeless even though they had a lot of green leaves and huge trunks. However, none of them seemed healthy to her.

She stepped closer to one of the trees standing nearest to her with her hand outstretched in front as she prepared to press it against the trunk. Her palm was almost about to come in contact with the tree trunk when a hand grabbed her arms and pulled her away from the tree.

Annalise let out a squeal as she found herself falling into a pair of strong arms as they helped her from falling to the ground.

"What are you doing?" She asked as she straightened and then turned around to look at Lord Damian in question.

The man glared back at her in return as he responded in his now usual cold voice. "Don’t go around touching things you can’t handle. Just stay still and don’t create trouble for me."

Here was the word again - trouble. Was that all he could think of about her? She wanted to ask the question out loud but didn’t dare to. Probably because she was too afraid to listen to his honest answer.

"I’ll be inside the carriage." She muttered before turning around and climbing inside the carriage. If she had to ignore creating trouble for him, staying inside the carriage was the best option.

Since it was already dusk, darkness had started settling around them and it only increased her level of worry. Several minutes had passed since Lord Valerius and Kenric left in search of a shelter but they still hadn’t returned.

Not being able to sit still, she opened the window of the carriage and looked outside only to let out a shocked gasp when she found someone standing on her left with their back pressed against the carriage.

"It’s only me." Lord Damian spoke as he took a step closer and watched her with an expression that seemed different than the usual look he used to give her these days.

She must be tripping but she almost felt like he was amused by her reaction.

"My lord, don’t you feel something is wrong here?" She asked as she let her gaze once again roam around. She wasn’t sure where she got the courage to ask that question to him and why she even thought that he would give her an answer.

There was a long silence for the next several seconds and it made her realize that she won’t be getting any answer from him. Just when she was ready to close the window and return inside, the man finally spoke. "Why are you always so curious about things?"

This wasn’t what she was expecting him to say, or ask, but she could see why he asked this particular question. She didn’t need to be a genius to tell that her habit of inquiring about things was one of the first few things that he probably disliked about her.

She let out a small breath as she answered, "This is just how I am like. Since childhood, I have always been curious about a lot of things and my father taught me to always voice my questions out loud if I think that the person in front of me had the ability to provide me with the answer. To this day, I’m just following his teaching."

Damian kept his gaze locked on her as he spoke, "So you really listen to your father a lot. Don’t you?"

The way he voiced out that question seemed weird to her and it made her finally look at him. The confusion was probably clearly evident on her face because the man spoke again, but not a single word leaving his mouth helped her with her confusion.

"You seemed to be good at acting. Did you also take special lessons for that? Or is it another of your natural talents?" His voice had returned to being cold and so were his expressions.

Annalise felt her frustration rising as she was once again faced with his accusations. "What’s with you? Why do you keep trying to make me feel..."

Her voice trailed off as the two of them heard a loud voice that sounded like a roar but also a scream.

Damian straightened up immediately as he pushed her inside the carriage and closed her window. "Stay inside and don’t come out unless I tell you." - were the last words he spoke to her before the window was closed and she was left inside in the darkness.
