Chapter 84: The Darkness of Midnight Realm
Annalise pressed her ear against the carriage window to hear what was going on outside, however, the only thing she found was the ire silence.
"My Lord..." She tried to call Lord Damien but got no response. Feeling her heart sinking lower with every passing second of silence, she tried to open the window but it seemed like Damien had locked it with a spell.
She knocked on the window as she called him again. "My lord, are you out there?" Still, she got no response. As her anxiety level rose, she once again tried to open the window before moving toward the carriage door, only to find it locked too.
"What did he mean by this? Is this a trick to abandon me here all alone?" A heavy feeling settled in her heart as soon as the second thought made its way out of her mouth.
A voice inside her head tried to convince her that Lord Damien won’t do such a thing to her only because he disliked her, but the bigger and sensible part of her mind was focused on the dislike part. He did dislike her, what if it was really his plan? Or why would he lock her inside the carriage and then disappeared?
She turned her attention to the moon thread wrapped around her wrist and as she focused on the connections between her and the other two lords, she found a weird sort of disturbance coming through the connection.
She tried to delve deeper, to find out exactly what was going on, and only after several attempts certain long moments did she finally get a clearer reading. Both the lords were quite far away from her current location but both were together. Besides, it seemed like they were using their powers hence the disturbance in the connections.
Her eyes flew open and she was met with complete darkness, as night had almost descended and the carriage was completely locked, blocking any sort of outside light from entering inside. She once again knocked against the carriage wall, making another futile attempt to call for Lord Damien but of course, she got no response.
The only possible option she could think of was to sit inside the carriage and wait, either for Lord Damien to take off the spell or for the other two lords to return. However, someone like her would never be able to sit patiently while she knew that something was really wrong outside.
She recalled the loud sound she heard before Lord Damien locked her inside. And while she couldn’t tell who or what made that sound, the one thing she could tell was that it belonged to someone or something scary. It somehow reminded her of those beasts that she encountered in the dark forest.
Taking help from her enhanced eyesight, she tried to find a way to open the door of the carriage. The only thing she needed was to break Lord Damien’s spell and she would be free. However, all three of her husbands were even more powerful than the King who was the strongest in the entire Seelie Empire. How could someone as weak as her would be able to break the spell then?
She almost gave up at the thought but then Pristine’s words entered her thoughts. The fairy said that she was not as ordinary as she had been thinking all this time, that she was way too powerful or at least, had the ability to become even more powerful.
She stared at her hands as if to see exactly what sort of great power she possessed. Taking in a deep breath, she pressed her palms against the carriage door and tried to focus on the energy of Damien’s power. Unlike her familiarity with the fire and ice magic of Valerius and Kenric, she was completely oblivious to Damien’s powers.
It took her a while but she did find the energy essence of his magic keeping the spell working on the carriage but what she found there almost made her retract her palms. He carried the power of darkness, not the dark energy that belonged to the primordial realm but the simple but pure darkness.
His powers worked in the shadows and that’s probably why she had been unable to sense it during all this time. She clenched her fingers into fists as she contemplated her next move. Even though it was not dark energy, it was still the power belonging to the darkness, she couldn’t just take the risk of getting tangled up with it.
Damien’s darkness was completely different from her power essence. The two weren’t supposed to mingle, or at least, that was what she had been taught. The power he carried, only belonged to those from the... midnight realm.
Once again she found herself questioning the true identity of her husbands. They possessed immense powers, they knew about almost everything, and now one of them carried the darkness of the Midnight Realm - the more she was getting to know them, the more mysterious they were becoming.
It took her a couple of moments to make up her mind and then she finally placed her palms against the carriage door. She closed her eyes and tried to put all the thoughts to a halt as she focused her attention back on Damien’s spell.
She still remembered how Valerius taught her the spell for turning any object with a flame or light into a moonstone, she tried to do the same with Damien’s spell.
She called on her powers and once again, they responded to her, coming to her aid immediately. She let her powers study Damien’s spell, the way his power worked, and also how his magic was keeping the spell in place.
Only when she was sure that she had enough knowledge about the spell, did she channel her powers to unbind the spell. Her power listened to her, making its way to her palms that were pressed against the carriage door before attacking Damien’s spell.
