The Veil of Darkness
Chapter 385: The Purple Fog

Chapter 385: The Purple Fog

"What is up with this fog?" Elijah questioned out loud as his eyes stared at the dark purple fog creating a layer over their heads. It didn’t attack, didn’t look poisonous, still, it gave the deep sense of danger.

"What are they trying to do?" The question came from the Marshal of the Mortal Army who was observing the fog from beside Elijah. Other than the obvious confusion, the underlying fear in his voice didn’t escape Damien’s ears. Turning his face to the side to look over his shoulder, he responded - "They are trying to intimidate you, and it seems like they are succeeding."

"My apology..."

"There’s no need." He stopped the Marshal from apologizing, his tone calm yet powerful. "I don’t expect you all to put on a strong front and hide your true emotions. It’s human nature to fear the unknown, especially when you can clearly sense the danger. Fear is not your weakness unless it makes you give up on your determination to fight and win. So, be afraid... but don’t become a coward."

His words sent a wave of strength through the mortal army who immediately responded back with a positive shout.

Returning his attention back to the fog, Damien tried to study it. He squinted through the thick haze, struggling to discern anything beyond the immediate vicinity, but even his supernatural eyesight faltered in the face of the fog and the mortal army accompanying him was virtually blind.

Damien clenched his jaw, the frustration evident in his eyes. "This fog is blocking everything—sight, hearing, even my sense of smell. We’re vulnerable."

Elijah furrowed his brows. "We can’t fight what we can’t see." The realization of the purpose behind the sudden appearance of the fog was finally dawning over them. He turned to face the Marshal and ordered - "Spread the word to stay vigilant. We need a plan."

As Damien attempted to contact Kenric, who was leading the Dawn Court army in the Seelie Empire, the fog disrupted his connection. He cursed under his breath, realizing that the fog wasn’t just an inconvenience; it was a strategic weapon wielded by their unseen adversary.

"Kenric won’t receive any messages," Damien warned, frustration etched across his face. "This fog is interfering with our communications."

The Summer Court army, which Damien expected to reinforce them, was nowhere in sight. The fog seemed to cut them off from the rest of the world, creating an isolation that bred uncertainty and fear.

Unable to teleport out of the fog-veiled battleground, Damien felt a sense of entrapment. His normally seamless ability to traverse distances with ease was nullified by the insidious haze surrounding them.

Unbeknownst to them all, the enemy lurked much closer than anticipated. The sudden realization hit Damien as dark magic-laced arrows sliced through the fog, finding their targets with deadly accuracy. Mortal soldiers fell, their life forces extinguished in an instant.

"Arrows! Be careful!" Damien bellowed, his voice cutting through the disorienting fog.

The mortal army scrambled, attempting to find shelter amidst the chaos, forgetting that there was no escape in the open battle ground. The once-ordered ranks devolved into a frenzied retreat as the unseen enemy continued their assault.

Elijah raised his voice above the din. "Form a defensive perimeter! Shield-bearers to the front, archers ready your bows!"

The mortals, though shaken, rallied under their Crown Prince’s leadership. Shield-bearers formed a protective barrier, powered by Damien’s shadow power, deflecting the deadly arrows aimed at them, while archers retaliated with arrows of their own.

Damien, his eyes narrowing in determination, focused on discerning any hint of the enemy’s location. The fog seemed to swirl with malevolence, concealing the adversaries with an almost sentient intention.

"We need to push forward!" Damien urged, slashing through the fog with his weapon. He could feel the oppressive magic resisting his every move.

Elijah nodded, rallying the troops. "Advance cautiously! We don’t know what we’re dealing with, but we can’t stay pinned down."

As the mortal army pressed forward, the fog seemed to tighten its grip, as if resisting their intrusion. Shadows danced at the periphery of their vision, and eerie whispers echoed through the mist.

Dialogue among the soldiers became terse, filled with urgency and tension. "Watch your flanks!" one warrior shouted, paranoia evident in his voice.

Damien immediately realized the problem. He was the only one there who had powers. He could either use his powers to protect the mortal army, or to eradict the enemy hiding behind the fog. They needed immediate help.

The battlefield became a surreal scene of war, with mortals clashing against an unseen adversary, guided only by the sporadic flashes of dark magic. Damien and Elijah moved in tandem, their leadership crucial in maintaining a semblance of order within the chaos.

The fog seemed to thicken as the conflict intensified, weaving a tapestry of uncertainty that tested the mettle of both supernatural and mortal alike. In the heart of the obscurity, Damien knew that unveiling the enemy’s location was paramount to turning the tide of the battle.

His bond with his brothers didn’t work because of the fog, so he tried that one bond which was considered most powerful existence in the history of magic - soulmate bond, and just like he expected, it worked immediately.

"Damien!"

His wife’s familiar voice filled his ears and he immediately felt her light power engulfing him through the bond. He could tell that something was different about her powers.

"Can you help me, Princess? I need Kenric and Seelie army..."

He didn’t even get to finish before there was a loud crackling of energy and the very next second - Kenric along with Dawn and Summer Court army, appeared there.

"I need to go, Damien. The black energy has escaped." - These were Annalise’s last words before she closed the link and disappeared from his mind. However, the touch of her light powers was still there.

"Do you feel it too?" Kenric asked as he came next to Damien and the two brothers didn’t even need more words to understand each other’s thoughts.

They both knew - Annalise had found the light energy.
