Chapter 278: Freeing The Divine Guardian Beasts (Part Two)
’Stars, Princess Annalise. How come you keep forgetting that the two of us are two sides of the same coin? There’s no barrier between us; nothing can separate us, and no matter which part of the universe, I can always find you.’ Came Esme’s response which didn’t make Annalise feel any better.
By now, she had started believing that despite the mystery Esmeray carried around him, his words were nothing but the truth. What she wanted to find out was exactly how she was related to him, and that was a question the man had refused to answer directly. According to him, she was supposed to find the answer on her own.
’Whatever!’
She just gave him the first response that came into her mind and decided to focus her attention on the witches, but the man didn’t remain silent and spoke again - ’So... how about giving it a try?’
’What?’ She asked as she tried to keep her attention properly divided between the witches and Esmeray as the latter had refused to leave her alone.
’About trying to look past their spell and see exactly how it’s working.’ Esme responded to her question.
Annalise thought about exactly what he was implying for a minute or two before she finally asked - ’That’s impossible, right? How can we look past a spell when we are not the caster?’ She was genuinely curious while a part of her somehow already knew the answer.
In response to her question, the first thing that Esmeray did was chuckle as if he was humored by her doubt, but then he gave her the answer that she really needed - ’Indeed, only a caster can see how their spell works past the time and dimensions, but you forget that all magic and spells are made of light and darkness, and there’s nothing hidden from them.’
There was so much that his simple words implied, a way deeper meaning than what Annalise was ready to accept. Everything around her simple life had been suddenly falling apart and turning out to be a lie that she was afraid of exploring any new secret of hers.
After her constant encounters with Esmeray, she was more or less catching on to exactly what he meant by his words that kept pointing toward her origin.
’What should I do?’ She asked after finally coming to terms with his idea, or more like a suggestion.
’Quite simple, just close your eyes and follow the magic. It will lead you to what you seek.’ Esmeray told her in his usual casual tone that made it seem like he was the most carefree person in the entire world.
Follow the magic - that’s what he said. Annalise recalled all those moments when she had experienced the magic happening in a way that no one else ever had, times when she was able to go beyond the simple spells and charms that existed in the current magical world. That’s what she needed to do, to go beyond the simple spell that the witches were casting and look at the real magic working behind it.
Her gaze shifted from the witches and their formation, traveling around the surroundings to find the real magic that was lurking in the air, waiting to come to life and perform its miracle. Once she got hold of it, she closed her eyes and allowed herself to feel it.
Just like what Esmeray had said, she did find the essence of light and darkness in the magic, and they both reacted immediately to her call, understanding her desire and giving her exactly what she wanted.
The light and darkness led her past time and dimensions, showing her how the spell had linked all the Portal Halls together to disperse the dark energy and, at the very same time, the center of the formation, containing Little Snow Lion’s power, was linking all the Divine Guardian Beasts together.
Annalise watched in amazement as the spell started working, and the first thing it did was collect the dark energy. For someone like the Dark Witches who performed dark magic, the dark energy was of even greater importance than the spirit cores, and if she had to guess, the dark energy was the actual reason why they even agreed to help out with this mission.
’Why the dark energy isn’t fighting against the spell at all?’ The question was directed at Esmeray since he was the only one with the right answer.
For a long moment, the man said absolutely nothing and almost made Annalise believe that she won’t be getting an answer, but then, he did tell her the reason - ’Though the dark energy is the evilest part of darkness, it still is a part of the darkness. As long as there’s no master reigning it, the dark energy won’t act.’
’So the dark energy can’t act on its own but needs someone to direct it, meaning there’s someone behind all the abnormal activities going on around the world that’s related to the dark energy.’ Annalise concluded something that they all had known for a while by now.
’If your words are pointing at me, then sorry to disappoint you Princess, but I’m not the person you all are looking for.’ Esmeray said in his defense.
However, Annalise was also quick to respond - ’But you do know who that person is.’ It wasn’t a question because she knew that he was aware of the identities of all those who were involved in the conspiracy of the dark energy.
Esmeray didn’t respond immediately but when he finally did after a while, it was exactly what Annalise was expecting - ’I don’t go around helping people for free, Annalise. While I’m not a part of this mess, I see no reason to stop your enemies... because what they are doing will eventually help me get what I want. I don’t believe in saving the world, that’s not my nature. But I definitely do believe in destroying the entire world to get what belongs to me.’
