Chapter 131: The Men’s Familiar Destination
Following a group of mysterious men in the middle of the night was not exactly what Annalise was good at but her current situation demanded her to perform this task to the best of her ability.
"How stupid of them to leave all together without leaving a single person behind to keep eyes on us." Leela was quick to criticize the group of men as she and Annalise followed them while hiding in the shadows. The element being Damien’s core power, happily surrounded Annalise and helped her in hiding her and Leela’s presence.
"Either they have a really important task to perform that needed all of them or they just don’t find us dangerous enough to waste their manpower just to keep an eye on us," Annalise stated in response to Leela’s comment about all of the men leaving the inn and not even one of them staying begin to watch over them.
"By the way, where is that little beast of yours?" Leela asked as the two of them hid in a narrow alley when the group of men stopped in front of a closed shop. They seemed to be studying some sort of map.
"No idea, to be honest. It appears and disappears at its own will." Annalise answered truthfully as she kept her gaze focused on Ezra and his companions.
Leela was silent only for a couple of moments before she whispered again, "I am really surprised to see that you have a familiar. From what I have learned and read, only the light faes and witches used to have familiars. Ever since the great tragedy, the witches went to live in the desolate city of Enigma along with their familiars and no one got to see these beautiful and unique familiars after that."
Annalise remained silent because she had no clue about how to respond. She was also aware of how rare having familiars was and it only made it more confusing that she suddenly got a familiar of all people in their world.
"But then looking at you... this doesn’t seem really that surprising." Leela continued when she noticed that Annalise wasn’t responding to her.
"What do you mean?" Annalise asked in confusion as she spared a quick look in the girl’s direction who just shrugged her shoulders in response before replying, "You aren’t definitely someone simple. Just like those men said, you are way more powerful than you appear. So, it should not be a surprise that you have a familiar."
Once again, Annalise had no idea how to respond to the girl’s statement. Once again, someone had pointed out that she was way more powerful than just a mere descendent of the Seelies with barely a little amount of light fae blood running through her veins.
At this rate, even she had started questioning if there was really something different about her that she wasn’t aware of. After all, there must be a reason why she was constantly hearing that she had way more powers locked inside her somewhere than she was aware of.
Besides, she was aware that recently, she was able to learn and cast spells way better and quicker than ever before. It’s like something major had changed ever since she got married.
She was pulled out of her thoughts when Leela nudged her slightly while bringing her attention toward the group of men who were once again moving.
Ending their conversation, Annalise and Leela once again started following those men and finally after another ten minutes or so, they finally seemed to have reached the destination.
"What is this place? There’s a very strong presence of elemental magic in the air here. It seems like something really powerful is inside this building." Leela was the one who spoke as her sharp eyes studied the building standing in front of them at a distance where the group of dragon shifters had stopped.
"Why have they come here?" Annalise asked no one in particular as she observed Ezra and his men as they all headed inside the building.
"You know what this place is?" Leela asked with excitement brimming in her almond-shaped eyes.
Annalise nodded her head as she let out a small sigh before answering, "This is the Portal Hall, and the elemental energy that you are feeling is from the portal located inside this building."
"A portal Hall?" Leela stared at the building with confusion clearly evident on her face. "Do you think those men are trying to flee?" She suddenly with a loud gasp as her eyes widened in realization. "How daring! They really took the two of us as no one that they are bold enough to fool us like this!" The girl was already seething in anger as she glared daggers at the building in front of them.
Annalise didn’t respond immediately as she wasn’t sure if Leela’s theory was correct or not but she couldn’t deny the fact that there was a huge chance that those men were indeed fleeing to get rid of them without causing any disturbance between the alliances that the Sky Castle and the Mer Court shared.
"Stepping inside the hall would not work. Can you think of any ideas to find out what’s going on inside?" She asked the girl while she called her powers on the surface to let them detect if the men were going to use the portal.
Leela was silent for a while as she looked around the building as if searching for something. Only after certain long moments had passed did she answer, "The building looks really old, walking on the roof to spy on the men doesn’t seem like an option... How about using an invisibility spell to keep ourselves hidden? The only problem is that Ezra seems a lot more powerful than me, he will be able to see through my spell."
Annalise pondered on the idea for a couple of seconds before she spoke, "How about this, you cast the spell and I’ll try to add my powers to it. Let’s see if makes the spell stronger to get us through the night."
Leela seemed to like the idea as she hurriedly nodded her head before taking hold of Annalise’s hands and closing her eyes to cast the invisibility and silence spell on both of them. At the very same time, Annalise let her powers arise and merge into Leela’s spell to increase its power.
None of them were sure if the idea would work practically or not as their powers weren’t really familiar with one another to combine together. However, thankfully it worked as their energies locked together on the spells and made it way more powerful than the initial spell cast by Leela.
Within a few moments, both the invisibility and silence spells were locked on both of them and they finally were ready to step inside the Portal Hall and find out about whatever was going inside. So far, Annalise could tell that they hadn’t used the Portal yet which only increased her suspicion toward the men’s reason behind visiting the Portal Hall of Millerville City.
"Wow! See, I told you that you are really powerful. This is one of the most powerful invisibility spells that I have ever seen in my life." Leela couldn’t hide her excitement mixed with amazement as she stared at Annalise in awe.
"Let’s not waste any more time here," Annalise told the girl before she took hold of her hand and pulled her in the direction of the building.
Both of them entered inside and immediately went toward the main hall where the Portal was located only to find the room completely deserted without any trace of the dragon shifters there.
"What’s going on?" Leela asked in confusion as she looked around the dark hall, her enhanced eyesight searching every corner of the room to make sure that none of the men were hiding in the shadows. "Do you think they left through some back door or something?" She asked but then hurriedly shook her head, answering her own question as her enhanced hearing picked up the movements around the building.
"They are still here, just not in this room," Annalise stated as she too looked around the room and let her enhanced hearing sense the directions from where the sounds were coming. "They seemed to b searching for something." She added when her ears picked up their swift movements around the building, all four men were searching different sections of the Portal Hall.
"Should we go and look for them separately to find out exactly what they are looking for?" Leeka suggested but Annalise shook her head in denial as the latter stated, "No need. They are already heading over here."
And indeed they were, all four men had stopped their searches and were returning to the main hall. It took only a minute or two before all four were gathered just a couple of feet away from where Annalise and Leela were hidden under the cover of Invisibility and Silence spells.
"We have searched the place... it’s not here."
