Chapter 110: Eyes of the Faes
Chapter 110: Eyes of the Faes
Annalise stared at the twin daggers that Kenric was holding above his palm, surrounded by a massive amount of fire essence. She immediately knew that, unlike the sword, the daggers were not only way more powerful but also valuable.
They matched the aura of their master and she could tell that they also carried the ability to manipulate fire. It was just a guess but a good one based on the flickers of fire energy that she noticed in the handles of the daggers.
She didn’t even realize that she was doing it but her hand was already reaching out to touch the weapons. However, before she could have touched them, Kenric stopped her as he closed his palm and the daggers disappeared.
She immediately looked up at his face in confusion. In response, the man cupped her face with one of his palms and grazed her cheek with his thumb before he spoke, "Those daggers are not ordinary weapons, you can’t touch them just like that. Let me warn you, Little Bird, never touch the weapons that belong to any three of us because it’s really dangerous. Even we don’t meddle with each other’s weapons."
She immediately nodded her head in understanding as she could tell that he was being serious. She noticed how he immediately relaxed and took in a deep breath before he once again took hold of her hand and resumed their search.
"What are we exactly looking for?" She asked as she kept her eyes focused so that she won’t miss anything that should not be missed but the problem was - she had no idea what to look for.
"Anything that doesn’t look natural. Something that doesn’t seem to belong to this place." Kenric answered as he stopped near the huge windows of the hall and observed them for a while.
"Something not natural... " Annalise repeated his words, trying to understand what he meant by that. "But how can you tell if a certain thing belongs to this place or not?" She asked again, not sure if she was being completely stupid at this point.
Before her marriage, she was known as not only the most beautiful maiden in the Seelie Empire but also the most knowledgeable person when it came to magical spells and other information related to the four realms. People used to praise her father for educating her to such an extreme level that she was considered a genius.
However, ever since her marriage, she had started to realize just how stupid she was to think that. Her knowledge of the four realms and the magical spells were really as bad as her physical strength. Maybe, just maybe, she really needed to work on her poor skills.
Kenric stopped whatever he was doing and turned to face her, his obsidian eyes were shining under the bright light of the moonstones. "It can be a feeling, an instinct, or something like that. You will know the moment your eyes will land on it. For example, look behind you and tell me if something is amiss here."
Annalise looked at him in confusion before she slowly turned around to look in the direction he was pointing. She found herself looking at the other end of the courtyard and the wall circling the Portal Hall.
"You have the blood of the light fae and their divine powers running through your body. Your eyes are no ordinary eyes, Little Bird, allow them to look beyond the picture that this place is painting for you, let them see what others can’t." Kenric whispered next to her ear, his soft words entering her brain and settling down.
Her ocean-blue eyes observed the area thoroughly and she tried to find if there was something that seemed to not belong to that place. She focused on what Kenric just taught her and tried to see past the image of the courtyard that was available in front of her, and then... her gaze landed on something that finally made her realize what he was trying to tell her.
"How did you do that?" She asked as she removed her attention from the rose flowers that were growing at the farthest corner of the courtyard. Just one look at those flowers and she knew that they didn’t belong there.
There was a difference in their energy essence and the essence of the other objects present in the Portal Hall, and that was exactly what she was supposed to search for - something that carried a different energy essence than the rest of the objects in the Portal Hall.
"You are a quick learner." Kenric praised as he gave her head a soft pat before he turned his attention back to the windows.
Finally having the confidence that she needed for the search, she finally dared to step away from Kenric and search around the courtyard. They looked around the area for a while but neither of them found anything suspicious.
"Maybe there’s nothing here. We should return inside." Kenric said as they returned to the entrance of the hall after finishing their search.
Both of them returned inside and found no trace of either Damien or Valerius, instead, a single moonstone was hovering in the air at the same exact place where they all had been standing before they left for searching their respective assigned areas.
"They must still be searching. What to do now?" She asked Kenric as she looked around the area and wondered exactly what would have happened inside the Portal Hall on that fateful day two decades ago.
"How about we join them? You are linked with both of them. How about you pick one link and head there while I’ll go to the other?" Kenric suggested as he gestured in two different directions of the hall.
Annalise noticed something flickering through his eyes as he spoke but it was gone too suddenly for her to grasp exactly what it was. She ended up nodding her head and then turned toward the north and headed in the direction where the bond led her.
