Chapter 57: On a hunt

"Your Highness, the attack on Princess Alora was intentional," Gabriel informed Magnus. "I found a solid evidence this time." He tilted his head back and the royal guard pushed forward a human, who begged for Magnus’s mercy.

"I’ve not even started Interrogating and you already are begging for my mercy," Magnus said as he walked to the man.

"Your Highness, I did what I was asked to do," the man said while crying and pleading to Magnus to spare him.

However, the Vampire Prince had no intention to spare this human. Magnus lifted him by wrapping his hand around his throat. "I have no intention to keep you alive. Your blood can at least satiate my hunger from the days," he pronounced.

"I’ve two young daughters at home. Please, Your Highness. Let me live. I have only provided the information about a rogue werewolf to the person, who asked me about it. Nothing more," the man said while joining his both hands.

"And who was the person who asked you about a rogue werewolf?" Magnus questioned.

"I-I don’t know. His face was not visible to me," the man replied.

Magnus caught his cheeks and forced him to look into his eyes. He went straight into the memory, where a fully masked man, asked about the rogue werewolf from the human. However, Magnus couldn’t recognize him. He could only see a weird tattoo on the back of the masked man’s back of the palm.

He finally pushed away the human, who fell to the dungeon’s floor. Catching his breath, the human caught Magnus’s legs, crying in front of him.

Magnus kicked him away, his fangs showed up as he grew angry. Because of the approaching Blood Moon, Magnus’s emotions were all over the place. It was easy to trigger him, given the fact that he was one of the rarest vampire breeds even in his family.

"How do you know the rogues?" Magnus questioned him.

"They live among us humans, Your Highness. So, I knew one such rogue. I had no idea he would die after I introduced him to an unknown person," the man cried loudly while apologizing for his mistake.

"Your Highness, this human has no fault. Let him go," Gabriel came to the rescue of the human and calmed down Magnus. "Now, we are sure that there are some people, who actually want Princess Alora to be dead," he proclaimed.

"Leave my sight. If you ever find in such a trade again, I’ll make sure to kill you in the most brutal way," Magnus announced and left the dungeon in anger.

Gabriel followed while the royal guards dragged out the human outside.

In the study room, Magnus drew something on paper while Gabriel waited for him to speak.

"Here," Magnus handed the paper to Gabriel, "Find the man with this symbol."

"Sure, Your Highness." He folded the paper and put it inside his pocket.

"Report to me as soon as you find such a person. Also, beware. I don’t want any kind of mistakes in this," Magnus told him.

"I will not act foolish," Gabriel assured the Prince and asked him if he was alright. "This year of Blood Moon is special. I think His Highness is affected more by it," he said with a genuine concern.

The poking fangs on Magnus’s mouth were still visible and his expressions were not pleasant either.

"I am fine," Magnus lied, running the temple of his forehead.

Gabriel fell silent and departed without another word.

Meanwhile, Magnus found his thoughts consumed by an urgent need for fresh human blood. Desperation gripped him as he realized his craving could only be satisfied by humans rather than supplies in the residence.

Alora’s face flashed through his mind, but he recoiled at the notion of harming her further. She was already frail and delicate, and he couldn’t bear the thought of causing her harm.

With frustration boiling inside him, Magnus slammed his hand down on the polished mahogany desk, rising from his seat in agitation.

As Tobias entered, Magnus swiftly instructed him to maintain a vigilant watch over Alora’s well-being.

"Where is His Highness off to at this late hour?" Tobias inquired, a tinge of concern evident in his voice.

"Outside, to hunt," Magnus replied curtly, his departure swift and decisive like a gust of wind.

Furrowing his brows, Tobias couldn’t shake the feeling that Magnus’s instincts were already veering off course. With a whole day remaining until the Blood Moon, Magnus’s unquenchable thirst for blood seemed premature and unsettling.

Alora asked a servant about Magnus as he still hadn’t returned. But she couldn’t get a satisfactory answer. With Tobias’s absence around her, she couldn’t find anyone to give her a better response.

"Your Highness, the dinner is set for you," said the new attendant in her service, Selvina.

"I will wait for Prince Magnus to return," Alora said.

"The Prince will return late. Please have your dinner and go to bed. We will be punished if you don’t take your meals on time," Tobias’s voice landed in her ears. "Forgive me for not reporting it to Her Highness myself. I was busy at some work," he clarified to her.

"It’s fine. I will have my dinner then," Alora stood up from her place. Selvina caught her hand and took her downstairs while supporting her.

In the dining hall, Alora sat for dinner alone. The servants left after serving the food to her. She couldn’t each much since Magnus was absent, but she made sure not to leave any food on her plate.

She put on her blindfold and rang the bell. Two servants came inside and cleaned the table. Behind them entered Selvina, who held Alora’s arm securely.

While crossing the living room, Izaak suddenly said something, which stopped the two of them.

"I heard Magnus is on a hunt tonight. Dear Sister-in-law, did you not offer your sacred blood to my brother?" Izaak asked, a sly smirk playing on his lips. With a subtle gesture, he signaled for Selvina to depart, leaving Alora alone with him.

"Do you understand what happens when my brother goes on a hunt?" Izaak inquired, his approach measured and deliberate as he closed the distance between them.

Alora shook her head, refusing to know anything related to them.

"Many humans lose their lives. My brother cannot sustain himself without the fresh blood of a human, right through the veins, for an extended period," Izaak murmured into her ear, his words carrying a chilling weight as he revealed the gruesome reality of Magnus’s nocturnal activities to her.
