Chapter 374: Odin’s Confession 1
"That’s not true. It’s for everyone," Odin replied. Why was it so hard to convince Venus!? When someone else would ask her, she would easily go, but with him all she had questions in mind.
"Odin, you know the significance of the ball, don’t you?" Venus asked, her tone laced with curiosity and a hint of skepticism. She couldn’t fathom why Odin, of all people, wanted to take her to such an event. They didn’t share the kind of relationship that warranted such a gesture.
"Hmm, where a man and a woman dance together," Odin replied with a casual nonchalance in his voice.
"Yes, and they typically have feelings for each other," Venus continued, her eyes searching his for any hint of an ulterior motive. "In our case, there’s nothing of the sort. Besides, I don’t think I should be part of such a gathering. It’s better to avoid unnecessary gossip. I hope you understand. You should take the woman you fancy instead; that would make more sense. I’ll head home in a local carriage," she suggested, her voice steady, though there was an underlying tension in her words.
Odin regarded her quietly before speaking. "I doubt there’s any woman more maddening than you," he finally said, his tone unexpectedly earnest. Venus frowned in response, meeting his gaze. For the first time, she saw something in his eyes—an emotion that left her momentarily speechless despite he called her mad.
Odin was never one to shy away from expressing his feelings, yet with this woman, he found himself hesitating.
"Thank you for being with me today," Venus said softly, bowing her head in gratitude as she prepared to leave. Just as she turned to walk away, Odin reached out and gently took hold of her hand.
"I believe in give and take," Odin murmured, his voice carrying the same conviction as when he had first spoken those words to her during her imprisonment.
Venus couldn’t understand why Odin was so insistent on taking her to the ball, especially if he had feelings for someone else. The confusion gnawed at her, making her uneasy.
Odin, sensing her discomfort, softened his approach. "Alright, then let’s do something different. We can go somewhere else, just the two of us. No crowd, no one else to make you feel out of place. How about that?" he suggested with a hopeful gaze this time.
"Where?" Venus asked, her curiosity piqued.
"I’ve heard about the boathouse ride. Would you like to try that?" Odin suggested, watching her closely.
Venus had noticed people enjoying the boat rides earlier, taking in the night view, and it had intrigued her. The idea of experiencing it herself sounded appealing, so she nodded in agreement.
Seeing her agree, Odin let out a quiet sigh of relief. Convincing Venus was no small feat. Unlike her sister, Alora, who was easily swayed, Venus required patience and effort. Yet, that only made moments like these, where he succeeded in winning her over, all the more satisfying.
Finally, they found themselves on the boat, which Odin had reserved entirely for the two of them, ensuring there would be no interruptions. The gentle rocking of the vessel, coupled with the soft glow of the lanterns attached to its sides, created a serene atmosphere. Venus sat quietly, her eyes fixed on the water. The lanterns illuminated the surface just enough for her to see her own reflection, rippling gently with the movement of the boat.
She felt a fleeting urge to reach out and touch the water, to feel its coolness against her fingers. But an irrational fear held her back—the thought that something might be lurking beneath the surface made her hesitant.
She drew her hand back, resting it in her lap, and finally shifted her gaze to Odin, who had been silently observing her the entire time. His eyes were intense, yet she couldn’t decipher what emotions they held.
"Odin, when I first visited your house, I was struck by how large it is," Venus began, her voice breaking the comfortable silence. She tilted her head slightly, her expression curious. "How do you live all by yourself in a place like that?"
Odin’s gaze softened at her question, though he remained silent for a moment, as if contemplating how to answer. The mansion was indeed vast, filled with empty rooms and long hallways that echoed with solitude.
He was used to the silence, the space, and the emptiness—but hearing Venus voice it aloud made it sound lonelier than he had ever admitted to himself.
"I think I’ve grown accustomed to living alone," Odin replied, his voice steady but with a hint of something unspoken. He held her gaze for a moment before adding, almost as an afterthought, "But the day after you kissed me, things changed slightly." His eyes searched hers, as if trying to convey a deeper meaning.
"Ah, that..." Venus stammered, her cheeks flushing as she quickly looked away. She hadn’t expected him to bring up the kiss, and hearing him mention it sent a wave of embarrassment through her. She didn’t even fully grasp what he meant by his words, but the mere reminder made her wish she could disappear on the spot.
"I-I didn’t know you already had someone you like. If I had known, I wouldn’t have done that," Venus murmured, her voice tinged with hesitation.
The awkwardness of the moment made her feel like she was shrinking under his gaze. Why wasn’t this ride ending? The desire to flee from Odin and the discomfort she felt around him was growing stronger by the second.
Venus turned her head toward the deck, and her eyes lit up when she saw it in the distance. Relief flooded her as she quickly and carefully stood up. "We’ll be landing soon," she murmured happily, eager to escape the tension of the boat ride. But before she could fully relish the thought, she sensed Odin’s presence right behind her.
She turned slightly, her gaze meeting his with a mixture of curiosity and surprise. "We’re finally—" she began, but her words were cut short as Odin placed a finger gently over her lips.
"Shhh," he hushed her in his soft voice. The cold touch of his finger sent a shiver down her spine, freezing her in place.
"You’re the crazy one I’ve started to like," Odin finally confessed. Before she could process his words, he leaned in and kissed her.
