Chapter 598: Chapter 260: Baby Bear_2

"Where? Don’t panic, I have my gun with me."

Uncle Victor quickly grabbed the hunting rifle slung across his chest, deftly loaded the bullet, and looked in the direction Yue’er pointed.

The camping trip encountering a wild bear caused an instant uproar in the live stream.

"Holy shit! Is this for real?"

"Where’s the bear? Show it on camera!"

"Be careful, streamer, don’t hesitate to run if you must!"

Lin Yang took a deep breath, then turned the drone camera to the direction mentioned, and soon a small bear appeared on the live stream.

"Damn, it really is a brown bear."

"Isn’t that a bear cub? Looks skinny and little, shouldn’t be dangerous."

"Don’t let your guard down, its mom might be close by. Such a young bear should be living near its mother."

The audience in the live stream immediately perked up, the bear cub seemed harmless.

After observing for a moment, Uncle Victor said, "This looks like a little guy that’s lost its mother, no need to be too tense."

"There’s no danger, right?" Lin Yang asked.

Uncle Victor nodded, "Shouldn’t be a problem, there’s no shortage of food this season. Bears that are living normally should be growing plump right now, but look, this little one seems so thin and scrawny, obviously, it hasn’t had its mother’s protection."

As an old hunter well-versed in outdoor adventures, Uncle Victor’s analysis was logical and very close to the truth.

"Look at its pitiful face, must be hungry, right? How about we give it something to eat?" Yue’er’s heart softened after hearing this.

In today’s social system, a child without a mother faces many hardships, let alone a young bear in the pure wilderness without its mother bear.

No wonder it looked so frail and feeble, the poor little guy must be starving.

At this moment, it smelled the fish soup and summoned the courage to approach slowly. It’s well known that wild bear cubs are very timid and would never approach humans unless driven mad by hunger.

"Uncle Victor, a bear cub of this size shouldn’t be dangerous, right?"

Lin Yang didn’t immediately respond to Yue’er but instead turned to look at Uncle Victor.

He always believed in letting experts handle their respective fields, and this was true when dealing with the bear cub as well.

Uncle Victor nodded, "In theory, there shouldn’t be too much risk, but if you want to feed it, you should still be careful. Bear claws, teeth, they all carry a lot of bacteria, and if they scratch you and you bleed, an infection could become troublesome."

"We’ve caught so many fish, should we give it some? Look how pitiful it is." Yue’er looked at Lin Yang with a hopeful gaze, as if afraid he would say no because of the risks.

Lin Yang, too, smiled, "Fine, it’s just a bear cub, and we can’t finish all these fish anyway. Subtracting what we’ll eat for lunch, I have no objections to giving the rest to it."

Seeing his agreement, the frown that had been fixed on Yue’er’s face finally eased.

She bent down and picked up a large piece of the processed silver trout, squatting slightly and tiptoeing stealthily towards the bear cub.

Despite its intense hunger, the bear cub hadn’t reached the point of complete disregard for risk. It looked up alertly when it saw Yue’er approaching and quickly made ready to run away.

Seeing this, Yue’er stopped, swung her arm, and threw the fish over.

The distance between the human and the bear was at most twenty to thirty meters; the fish flew out seven or eight meters and landed on the ground, still about ten meters from the bear cub.

The bear cub turned its head and ran a few steps, but it stopped quickly when it noticed that Yue’er had no intention of chasing after it. Its wet nose sniffed in the air and it soon discovered that what had been thrown to it was not a stone or a weapon, but a piece of fish meat, bones removed.

Such a small bear probably didn’t know how to fish yet, and the water wasn’t shallow enough for it to pick up fish at will. It had been a long time since the little bear had eaten anything.

Once it was sure it was fish, it rushed over, grabbed the fish meat, and ran off with it.

A piece of fish meat, at most half a pound in weight, might fill up a person with a smaller appetite, but for a little bear that had gone long without food, it was just enough to whet its appetite.

It wolfed down the meat, and in less than a minute, the bear cub was back.

The high-definition camera on the drone captured the bear cub scooping up the meat and running away, as well as it devouring the food in just a few dozen meters. A moment before, viewers who had been expressing various emotions in the live streaming room were now silent.

Seeing the large bites this skinny little fellow took, it looked just like a starving vagabond that had found a bun and stuffed it into his belly in three bites, rolling his white eyes. The audience felt a twinge of pity.

Yue’er: "Brother Yang, is there any way we can save this little bear? Judging by how it was eating just now, it must not have found food for a long time. If we ignore it, as the weather gets colder, it’ll freeze to death in winter."

If it was a matter of spending some money or calling in a favor, Lin Yang would certainly not refuse as long as Yue’er asked.

But the idea of adopting a bear cub in a foreign land left him without any clue; this was beyond his capabilities.

After some thought, Lin Yang turned to Victor: "Uncle Victor, are there any organizations in Russia that rescue and adopt bear cubs like this one? I don’t mind paying for the rescue."

Victor: "In Moscow, there indeed are wildlife preservation organizations that rescue brown bears. However, it’s too far from where we are, and we don’t have the proper tools for capturing and transporting, which makes it very troublesome.

Although brown bears are protected animals, they are quite common here in Russia. Cubs that lose their mothers are numerous each year. Statistics from the past two years show that on the Kamchatka Peninsula alone, there are at least over sixty thousand brown bears, and this doesn’t even count the ones born in recent years."

"That doesn’t mean we can just ignore it when we encounter one, though. Please help, Uncle Victor, we can pay for the rescue of this little bear," Yue’er continued to ask, not willing to give up.

Now, Uncle Victor hesitated a bit.

The fact was, at remote camps like theirs, which were established in uninhabited areas, government supervision was very lax. Raising a bear only required filing a report with the closest government agency, which wasn’t very difficult.

Brown bears’ diets are very varied and they are not picky at all. Plant seeds, fruits, processed fish, offal from prey, scraps, nearly all organic waste from the camp could be used to feed them. The only issue was that adults ate a lot.

Lin Yang added: "I think our camp has plenty of space, and if this little guy is docile, why not take him back and raise him until he’s big enough to return to nature? I will cover the food expenses, and just think about it, having a domesticated brown bear in the camp would really enhance the experience for future visitors."

Uncle Victor wasn’t moved by the mention of food expenses, but Lin Yang’s last suggestion piqued his interest.

Truly, for visitors coming from China, other than at a zoo, they didn’t have opportunities for close encounters with bears. If the camp could keep a tame, non-aggressive brown bear, it would indeed be a big boost for business.

Russia, after all, had its own celebrity brown bears. A bear raised at home, by taking photos with tourists, earned a huge amount of money every year.

"Since that’s the case, let’s give it a try, though we don’t have professional tools, I’m not sure if we can bring it back safely," Uncle Victor nodded, agreeing to the plan.

Lin Yang looked around and quickly found a Losing Hand Rope inside an equipment box on the boat by the shore.

This Losing Hand Rope was black, about as thick as the refill of a ballpoint pen. Although it wasn’t as strong as parachute cord, it should be strong enough to bind a skinny little bear cub.

"Will this do?" he asked.

"Yes!" Uncle Victor glanced at it and nodded.

Soon, Uncle Victor used the Losing Hand Rope to create a noose trap, bending a small tree and cutting a few branches to make a triggering mechanism. He then scattered some leaves over the noose, and placed a piece of fish meat inside it.

Lacking the wisdom of an adult brown bear, the cub’s craving for food overwhelmed its caution against danger.

In less than ten minutes, it mustered up the courage to approach the noose trap for the fish meat, and soon enough, one of its front paws was caught in the noose, followed by a panicked howl.
