Chapter 597: Chapter 260: Baby Bear
For those who often participate in outdoor activities, wading through water in hip boots is just a basic operation.
However, many viewers in the live stream are city folks who rarely have such experiences. Just a short while ago, the area where the shallow and deep waters meet looked a bit treacherous, causing these viewers to become incredibly tense.
After continuing upstream for another half hour or so, the water surface widened again.
The color of the water also changed from the previous yellow-green clarity to a faint green. According to Uncle Victor, the water level in this area is much deeper, with many places being four to five meters deep or even more.
With deeper water, naturally, there are more fish to harbor. The fishing boat found a spot to moor on one side, and Lin Yang began to cast his fishing rod over the extensive area, once again exploring.
Though quite a few fish were caught, the big catch that everyone was eagerly anticipating eluded them.
A few dogfish and silver trout were caught in succession, each weighing about four or five jin. The silver trout, with its higher quality and better taste, was slaughtered in preparation for lunch, whereas the dogfish were released.
Time flew, and before we knew it, it had gone from early morning past eight to noon.
The sun came out, dispersing the overcast haze above the Kubi River, and stomachs started to growl with hunger.
"Brother Yang, shall we find a place to have lunch? I’m starving," Yue’er pleaded.
No sooner had she spoken the word ’hungry’ than Lin Yang’s own stomach growled in response.
"I’m hungry too. Uncle Victor, shall we go back to camp for lunch, or should we make do on the boat?" Lin Yang politely asked.
Victor looked around at the surroundings and said, "When I came out, I brought enough provisions for the three of us. However, the fishing conditions might not be good during the midday period, so why don’t we find a suitable riverside and make a delicious fish soup for you? The climate here is much colder, and drinking fish soup can warm the body."
Victor’s suggestion was immediately met with unanimous approval from Lin Yang and the others.
Once everyone agreed, they quickly found a suitable spot along the shore for the small boat to approach, anchored the boat securely to a large tree by the riverbank, and Uncle Victor then carried the cooking gear off the boat.
"Guys, after discussing with Captain Victor, we’ve decided to go ashore and cook our meal. In a foreign land, let’s have a small cookout," Lin Yang called out, lifting the height of the drone to capture the surroundings with an aerial shot.
Perhaps due to the annual rising and falling of water levels, the shoreline of the Kubi River had few large, robust trees. The flat areas of various sizes near the riverbank were perfect for camping, and Victor casually chose an even spot to place the cooking gear and the caught fish before getting busy.
Just by observing, Lin Yang realized that Uncle Victor had quite impressive skills in outdoor survival.
Choosing a campsite, collecting firewood, processing food—Lin Yang and his companion were eager to help but ended up only being able to lend a hand in minor tasks, as most of the work was efficiently handled by Captain Victor.
In fact, the lunch was quite simple to prepare.
The silver trout had already been processed in advance; the fish meat was ready and the roe had been lightly cured, ready for use.
Victor simply grabbed a Chinook salmon from the live fish box, went to the water’s edge, and cleaned and cut it into chunks with speed and efficiency.
Then there was the simple campfire made with three wooden forks as its frame, holding the cooking pot for making soup. The fish chunks, along with the simple seasoning spices to remove the fishy smell, were tossed in. With the crackling fire burning beneath, it didn’t take long for a fragrant smell to drift from the pot.
"Uncle Victor, do you often camp outdoors?" Lin Yang casually asked while they waited for the fish soup to be ready.
"Yes, every year I take many clients from overseas on fishing and hunting trips. Cooking and living outdoors is a basic, essential skill," Victor replied.
"You seemed quite cautious in choosing a spot for the fire. Is there a particular reason for that?" Lin Yang continued.
Victor nodded: "In the Russian wilderness, it’s different from China. Many areas here are uninhabited zones, seldom visited by humans, with an abundance of wildlife.
When choosing a campsite, the first consideration is safety. For example, the fish we butcher should be cleaned by the water’s edge, and any blood should be washed away to prevent spreading the scent. Likewise, the fish soup we’re cooking now might attract the attention of brown bears.
When selecting a campsite, one must also choose an area that is as open as possible, without too much cover. Otherwise, a brown bear emerging from the bushes might attack us suddenly, and even if you have a gun, there’s still a risk of getting hurt from the surprise attack."
While saying this, Lin Yang instinctively glanced around. The area was sparsely wooded, so it was unlikely that any wild animals could hide within a radius of one or two hundred meters.
Just as he looked around and was about to lower his head, Yue’er beside him suddenly got very excited and tugged at his arm.
"Brother Yang, look quick! Is that a bear cub?"
Hearing ’bear cub,’ Lin Yang immediately tensed up and looked in the direction she pointed.
Yue’er was pointing to the south side of the temporary camp, at the downwind spot close to the riverbank, no more than fifty meters away in a straight line. There was a little black figure sniffing around curiously.
After a careful look, if that wasn’t a bear, what else could it be?
"Damn, it’s really a bear!"
The discovery made Lin Yang swear in shock as he instinctively grabbed a stick with his right hand and placed his left arm protectively in front of Yue’er.
