Chapter 148: Chapter 148

The moment Amelia exited the carriage all eyes fell upon her specifically. It didn’t matter that Gina was also different from everyone else. The stares had not shifted from Amelia to Gina.

Amelia ignored the stares, keeping a smile as she followed behind Alastor. The last thing she wanted to do at this moment was to show anyone that she was scared or they would feed off of it.

Gina stuck close to Amelia, still trying to process the king’s death and handle the deadly stares at Amelia. ’Even the children have stopped to watch her,’ she thought.

Cyrus tied his horse near the carriage and speed walked to where Amelia was.

"They are selling vegetables. Are there fields nearby? I didn’t get a good look at the land on my way up," Amelia said to Alastor. She was intrigued by the corn, potatoes, and produce that was on sale in boxes. They would profit greatly if some of these vegetables were traded to the Blackwell kingdom.

Amelia remembered overhearing complaints from farmers to her father about some soil not being good enough for their vegetables to grow as they should.

"There are a lot of lands nearby that the farmers here use. The people here are less likely to find souls to find one but lucky for them they can thrive off of food to sustain themselves. The castle has business with a few of the farmers and there are some items sent down to the underworld. The queen misses it and the Devil has gotten accustomed to it. Specifically anything with alcohol," Alastor explained.

Amelia found their life to be fascinating the more she learned about it. What once seemed scary was actually intriguing. There was so much to be shared between the two kingdoms if they could only work together.

"So it is true. Killian Bune wants to marry one of them," a stranger hissed.

Amelia heard someone’s voice not too far behind her. She anticipated this cold welcome and already had a solution for it. She remembered something Killian had told her about the levels of demons. "Alastor, I would like for you to recommend some young women who would be willing to live in the castle as my personal maids or even ladies," she pretended to whisper.

Amelia knew they were all listening in to her conversation so she did not need to speak too loud. Killian explained to her most of the demons outside the castle were low-level and would jump at the chance to glue themselves to someone in a higher position. They would dislike her being human but they wouldn’t miss the chance to be in the castle. All she needed was to spark their interest to get close to them and then squeeze her way into their hearts.

"Sure," Alastor replied in a dry tone. He wondered what this was about until he noticed the once deadly stares had turned to excitement from the prospect of going into the castle. ’Smart little thing,’ he thought.

Alastor couldn’t say the same for the demons blinded by the chance to get out of this small village and live in the castle. They were like moths to a flame. A flame started by the woman beside him.

Cyrus touched his sword when a woman stepped out of the crowd to approach Amelia.

"Good day to our future queen. My name is Edith and I would be happy to offer my services to you in the castle. I am the best fighter in the village and among my peers from the underworld. I can adapt to being your maid with just one hour of teaching," Edith said, putting herself out there unlike the others who were taking too long to step forward.

She was miles ahead of the people here and deserved to be living in the castle. Life in the village did not suit her and she had been preparing herself to go back down to the underworld instead of continuing to live like this. Who cared about what the king was marrying when there was a golden chance to get close to him? She wanted to prove she was a fine warrior to Killian.

"I am a better choice to be taken back with you to the castle. I have knowledge of the north and the underworld after years of studying. I can provide any answer to your questions," another demoness named Lamia stepped forward. She would be damned if Edith stole this moment from her. "I go by the name Lamia."

"Anyone who is interested should visit the castle first thing tomorrow morning for me to make a selection. You should be ready to drop what you are doing here and live in the castle. With the wedding so close, I will need you to start living in the castle tomorrow. I might also need a few male servants," Amelia said, looking at a group of men who were clearly annoyed that the invitation seemed to be for women. "You can continue with the tour, Alastor."

Unbeknownst to himself, Alastor smiled but Amelia had caught it.

’The best way to impress him is with common sense. Seems fitting for his character,’ Amelia thought.

The village started to move around as everyone wanted to prepare for the grand opportunity tomorrow. Alastor led Amelia away from the crowd to show her the fields of vegetables and small farms.

"How did you know the best way to make them like you was to offer them positions?" Alastor asked.

"Killian and I had a brief conversation about lower-level demons and how they would jump at the chance to stick to someone with a higher position. I know this alone won’t make them like me but it is a start. I want it told to all the villages we will be visiting today," Amelia replied.

Amelia believed in knowledge being power so she already had plans to pick Lamia. "A trade between the two lands would be beneficial," she said as she looked out at the vast land. "Where do I need to go to stop the dispute?"]

"Out there," Alastor pointed to the left of where they were now.

Amelia stepped forward to get a good look at the place in the distance and was surprised by what she saw. "Is that smoke? Please tell me there is some big bonfire just for fun and I am not going to walk into some craziness. Why the hell is it on fire?"

Amelia was expecting a normal dispute. Did everything have to be wild just because they are demons? Why not return to the underworld with this madness and why didn’t Killian give her a heads-up? ’It is hard not to think about killing Killian. I wouldn’t be surprised if he watching this all play out,’ Amelia thought, looking to the sky to check if he was following them.

"They normally set each other’s homes, crops, and other belongings on fire trying to run each other out," Cyrus answered. He had stumbled upon this feud a while ago. It was pointless and he was certain neither side knew why they were upset. Why the hell was Amelia tasked with solving it?

Cyrus failed to understand Killian’s logic. If he cared for Amelia, why was he putting her in the middle of this dangerous feud?
