The Sweetest Temptation -
Chapter 97: Wake up
Chapter 97: Wake up
Life was a journey full of ups and downs, joys and sorrows, and moments of great beauty and moments of profound sadness. At times, it could feel like we are just along for the ride, powerless to change the course of our lives or the circumstances that befall us.
We were all born into this world with our own unique set of challenges and struggles, and we all have to find our own way through the highs and lows of life. Some of us would face hardship and adversity that seemed insurmountable, while others would enjoy a life of relative ease and comfort. But no matter where we fall on this spectrum, one thing was certain: life is uncertain.
But each day lasts only 24 hours, and when the sun sets, it always rises again the next morning, wiping away the events of the previous day and offering a fresh start.
However, for Beatrix, no new day had been able to bring back the light that once shone in her eyes. The sun may rise and set countless times, but it cannot erase the pain and sadness that Beatrix felt at the moment.
It had been three weeks since Beatrix’s life was completely upended, when Damien’s lifeless body was brought to the hospital. She had not heard his voice, or seen him smile at her for three weeks.
It was so extremely distressing and heart-wrenching to see him battling for his life in the hospital. The uncertainty and fear of not knowing what the outcome will be was overwhelming, leading to her feeling despair and hopeless.
She wished she was the one lying there instead of him.
She knew she had to be grateful because he was barely alive when he was brought here.
The doctors had to perform miracles to bring him back to health, administering a strong dosage of medication to help his body heal from the numerous burns covering his body.
Beatrix hadn’t left the hospital. Not for a day, not for an hour, not even for a minute.
There had not been any improvement in Damien’s condition.
Damien was in a deep sleep in the hospital, and despite the efforts of the best doctors in the world, he had not yet awoken.
They were all determined to do whatever it took to help him wake up and had become obsessed with finding a solution.
However, both her and Rhys mental and physical well-being had suffered as a result of their focus on Damien’s condition.
They were unable to function, eat, or sleep properly, consumed by worry for Damien.
Beatrix was afraid that Rhys would relapse again; she could see that he was hanging on just a thin thread.
Ever since Damien was admitted his nightmares were getting worse anytime he was able to doze off. Even she was having nightmares too.
Because of that she rarely left him alone and when she did she made sure someone was around with him.
His eyes were empty and he had lost a ton of weight.
She was scared—scared of losing him too.
Rhys and Damien had suddenly become a central part of Beatrix’s life, and she couldn’t deny the strong feelings she had developed for them. She was captivated by their eyes and their smile made her heart race. They had cast a spell on her, and she was happy to be under her influence.
She couldn’t imagine living without any of them.
Rhys had left with Xavier to sort out some issues. They wouldn’t tell her what though. But she knew Damien’s absence was affecting the syndicate.
Everyone wanted to be the leader of the pack and once there was a loophole they would strike.
"Miss Quinn?" Said a nurse as she walked out of Damien’s private room in the VIP ward of the hospital.
"You may go inside now, his checkup is complete."
"How is he?" Beatrix asked with desperation.
"Vitals are still the same. He is healing but at a slow pace."
Beatrix gave the nurse a soft nod before barging into Damien’s room.
He remained unchanged from how she had last seen him an hour ago, the previous day, the night before, and the weeks before. Despite this, Beatrix couldn’t help but wish that someday she would enter his room and see his smile that made her heart race.
Beatrix sat on the stool next to his bed and took his cold hands in hers, interlacing their fingers. She brought his hand to her lips and kissed it tenderly, silently imploring him to wake up with her heart rather than words.
"Damien?" she whispered. "Please wake up. I need you. I need you Damien. You have to wake up. For me and Rhys." Her voice was laced with sadness and desperation.
Beatrix had never wanted anything as badly as he wanted Damien to wake up. She had never begged for anything so fervently before. Growing up in a wealthy family with an overprotective father and siblings she was used to getting everything she wanted with a snap of her fingers of course except her freedom.
But now she realized that money couldn’t buy everything, especially not Damien. He was invaluable, worth more to him than all the money in the world.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a gentle knock on the door, followed by Ava entering the room. "How is he ?" Ava asked, looking at Damien on the bed.
Although she didn’t know Damien well she always came to accompany Beatrix in the hospital, bringing her food and new clothes.
"Same." She mumbled before standing up and walking towards her.
"Hmm...I’m sure he will get well soon. Have you eaten?"
Beatrix pinched the bridge in between her brows and sighed. Even though her body was crying for food. She had been ignoring it.
"No."
Ava frowned at her, "Beatrix I have told you to take good care of yourself. If something happens to you before Damien wakes up what will you do? Don’t you want to be around when he wakes up?" Ava said softly
Beatrix lowered her head and fiddled with her fingers, "Yeah...I’m just scared and the nerves make it difficult for me to function."
Ava nodded and pulled her into a hug, "I understand dear. Let’s take a walk to calm down okay? After that we will find you something to eat."
Beatrix pulled away from her and smiled gratefully at her friend. They hadn’t known each other for a long time but she was always there for her.
"Thank you Ava."
