The Sweetest Temptation
Chapter 96: Sleep

Chapter 96: Sleep

Beatrix jolted awake to find Rhys hovering above her. So it was a dream. Everything was a dream.

Blinking the tears away, he saw Rhys’ face morphed with pain. Her gaze averted to Damien’s body lying on the hospital bed.

He was still the same, tubes and machines were attached to him. His beautiful eyes closed.

Her lower lip quivered as she tried to maintain her composure, but it was no use. A tear rolled down her cheek, followed by another, and then another.

She let out a choked sob and covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking with the force of her crying.

Rhys pulled her into his arms.

"Shs—Shss——" he rubbed her back gently to calm her down.

She let out ragged sobs that shook her entire body, her shoulders trembling with the force of her grief.

The room was filled with the sound of her weeping, an anguished chorus that echoed off the walls and seemed to fill every corner of the space. As she cried, she felt a sense of release, as if all the pain and sadness that had been building up inside her was finally finding an outlet.

But at the same time, she knew that this was just the beginning of a long and difficult journey, and that she would have to find the strength to keep going.

"Beatrix..." Rhys pulled away and held her chin forcing her to look at him but Beatrix averted her gaze.

She didn’t want him to see her cry. She had to be strong enough for both of them.

Damien needed them. She had seen how much this was affecting Rhys. The least thing he needed was to take care of a cry baby.

"I’m sorry-so sorry. I-I didn’t mean to cry....."

Rhys sighed, "Stupid. You should cry if you want to. Stop acting so strong!"

Beatrix looked at him, her mouth opened but it remained soundless as no words came out.

"I-I’m not.... I’m just scared. I want to pretend none of this is real." She bursted into another tears.

Rhys rubbed soothing circles on her back as she cried.

"It’s going to be okay," he said softly. "Damien going to be fine. He’s a fighter."

Beatrix sniffled and looked up at him, her eyes red and puffy from crying. "But what if he’s not?" she whispered .

"What if I lose him?"

Rhys cupped her face in his hands, wiping away her tears with his thumbs.

"You’re not going to lose him," he said firmly. "And even if the worst were to happen, I’ll be here for you. You don’t have to go through this alone."

Beatrix leaned into his embrace, feeling a sense of comfort wash over her. She knew that she could always count on him to be there for her, no matter what. And with him by her side, she felt a little bit stronger, a little bit more able to face whatever the future might hold.

Rhys wrapped his arms around Beatrix holding her close as she continued to cry. He whispered soothing words in her ear, telling her that everything was going to be alright and that he was here for her no matter what.

As the minutes tick by, Beatrix slowly began to calm down. She took a deep breath and pulled away from Rhys, wiping her eyes and trying to compose herself.

"I’m sorry," she said, her voice trembling. "I didn’t mean to fall apart like that."

Rhys shook his head and smiled at her. "Don’t apologize," he said. "You have every right to be upset. We don’t know what to expect it’s a scary thing. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed."

Beatrix nodded , grateful for his understanding.

She took another deep breath and looked up at him, she could see the dark lines and tiredness lingering in his eyes.

Beatrix furrowed her brows, "Have you rested too?"

Rhys shook his head, "I can’t sleep. I’m afraid that I will lose him if I close my eyes."

Beatrix glanced at Damien and sighed, "I don’t think he would want us to torture ourselves like this."

Rhys chuckled, "Yeah. He is probably angry right now that I look like shit."

Beatrix smiled, "Yeah. I guess he is."

Silence enveloped them with both of them lost in thoughts.

"Sleep too Rhys. I will be here to watch over Damien. Nothing will happen to him."

Rhys shook his head, "I can’t. My mind will be racing."

Come on, Rhys. You can sleep here. I’ll stay with you and make sure you’re comfortable."

Rhys hesitated for a moment, but eventually he gave in and lay down on Beatrix’s lap. He looked exhausted, his eyes closed as he tried to fall asleep.

She wrapped a comforting arm around him and began to stroke his hair, talking to him in a soothing voice.

"Just close your eyes and try to relax, Rhys. Everything is going to be alright."

Rhys’s eyelids began to feel heavy and he could feel himself starting to drift off. He snuggled closer to Beatrix, feeling safe and protected in her embrace.

The room was quiet except for the sound of her voice and the occasional creak of the couch as she shifted position.

Rhys’s breathing became slow and steady as he finally began to drift off to sleep. Beatrix smiled down at him, happy to be able to help him get some rest.

She continued to stroke his hair and spoke softly until he was fully asleep.

As the night went on, Rhys slept soundly on Beatrix’s lap, completely at peace. He was completely unaware of the soft snores that escaped from her lips as she too drifted off to sleep.

The couch was comfortable and the hospital room was quiet except for the gentle sound of their breathing and the beeping machine.

Outside, the moon shone brightly through the window, casting a soft glow over the peaceful scene.

Even though there was nothing peaceful about what they were going through.
