Chapter 184: Secret untold
Chapter 184: Secret untold
Rhys has waited for this moment all his life. Plotting, waiting for the perfect opportunity and here it is. Rhys’ lips pulled into a tight line as he made his way in the dark corridor leading to Carlos’ office
He knew he had to remain calm and collected, despite the overwhelming rush of adrenaline coursing through his veins. Rhys had rehearsed this moment in his head a thousand times, imagining every possible scenario and outcome.
As he approached the door to Carlos’ office, Rhys paused for a moment, taking a deep breath and composed himself. He had to be careful, quiet, and quick.
He didn’t want to alert anyone to his presence. He slowly turned the doorknob, and to his surprise, the door opened without a sound. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him, enveloping himself in darkness.
Rhys’ eyes slowly adjusted to the dim light as he scanned the room.
He had spent the day with Beatrix cuddling in her bedroom after they came back from the cemetery.
She had reminisced her childhood memories of her mother and her father. The more he listened to her the more it was harder to believe that monster of a man was her father.
She had told him his father spent this day alone in his office alone with no security guards. Just his bottle of liquor while staring at her mother’s portrait.
Her mother was his soulmate and he hasn’t been the same person ever since she died.
He saw the man sitting on a chair with his back facing him..Rhys silently crept closer, his heart pounding in his chest. He could see the bottle of liquor on the desk in front of Carlos, and the dim light reflecting off the portrait of Beatrix’s mother on the wall.
Rhys took a deep breath, steadying his nerves, and reached into his pocket for the syringe.
As he approached Carlos from behind, Rhys could see the man’s shoulders heaving with sobs. He hesitated for a moment, wondering if he should go through with his plan. But then he remembered how the man had destroyed his childhood and he steeled himself to do what needed to be done.
Rhys moved closer, and just as he was about to inject the syringe into Carlos’ neck, the man spoke.
"I know you’re there, Rhys," Carlos said, his voice shaking with emotion. "I’ve been waiting for you."
Rhys froze, his hand still holding the syringe. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Had Carlos somehow known all along?
"Those pretty blue eyes filled with so much hate and pain I would never forget it. The first time I saw you I knew you from somewhere. I-I just couldn’t point out where."
Carlos chuckled, taking a swig of his bottle. "Then I started receiving those packages. Then the puzzles started falling into place."
Rhys felt a chill run down his spine. He had been so careful, making sure there was no way Carlos could trace the packages back to him. But he had underestimated the man’s intelligence.o
Without another word, Rhys plunged the syringe into Carlos’ neck, injecting the sedative that he had carefully prepared. Carlos slumped forward, unconscious.
Rhys quickly tied Carlos’ hands and feet, making sure he was secure. He had to act fast now, before anyone else came looking for Carlos.
He walked out of the room, locking the door with the key in pocket.
Rhys made his way back to Beatrix’s room. He saw that she was sitting on the bed rubbing her eyes. It seems she just woke up.
"Hey..where did you go? I woke up and you weren’t beside me. Is everything okay?"
Rhys nodded as he stride towards her.
"Sorry I didn’t mean to make you worry. Couldn’t sleep so I went for a walk."
Beatrix looked at Rhys with a hint of concern in her eyes. "Are you sure everything is alright? You seem a little off."
Rhys hesitated for a moment before deciding to open up to her. "Actually, I had a nightmare. It shook me up a bit and I didn’t want to disturb your sleep. That’s why I went for a walk."
Beatrix placed her hand on Rhys’s shoulder, comforting him. "Do you want to talk about it? Sometimes it helps to share your feelings with someone."
Rhys watched the worried expression etched on her face while his, was etched with guilt and fear, along with a hint of sorrow as he knew there was a mournful tone in his voice, as if he was grieving over something he had lost or was about to lose. But he had to tell her, he couldn’t keep it bottled up anymore.
"Can I tell you something?" he asked, his guilt and fear evident in his voice.
She agreed, her heart aching like splintered bones in her chest over how broken he looked. It was clear that Rhys didn’t want to do this, but he pushed past his own discomfort to open up about something that was bothering him.
She knew Rhys well, and for him to share something he didn’t want to say was a big step.
She could see the anguish and confusion in Rhys’s eyes as he struggled to deal with his emotions. He sighed, ran his fingers through his hair, and sat down on the couch, defeated. Leaning forward, he rested his elbows on his knees and pressed his forehead against his hands.
"It was never meant to end up like this..." he began, his body language indicating defeat. It was hard to watch someone she loved so much struggle with their inner demons, but she was there for him, to support and comfort him.
"With you - I mean. When I first met you at the bar I had no idea who you were. I thought you were this cute clueless girl but a beautiful one. You were so ignorant and innocent. How could anyone be this pure in this cruel world?" Rhys explains, speaking cautiously as he chooses his words carefully.
She listened intently, memories flooding her mind. "Well I guess I’m not so innocent now." she chuckled.
