Chapter 108: The one I want
The security guard nodded and left the room, leaving Damien and Rhys alone to prepare for the confrontation. Rhys took another deep breath and stood up, determined to face his fears head on.
The door opened again and Beatrix, along with her family, entered the room. Rhys’s heart pounded in his chest as he met the gaze of Beatrix’s father, the man who had caused him so much pain and suffering.
Rhys was sure that he wouldn’t even remember him but it was okay. One day he will let him remember the pain he felt every second of that night.
"Rhys!" Beatrix called him softly and he felt the anger and pain disappearing from him.
"Meet my family, my dad and my brothers, Matteo and Remo."
Rhys gave a stiff nod as a form of greeting.
"Have I seen you somewhere before?" Mr. Quinn asked, his brows furrowed together.
Beatrix blinked, "Well he is Damien’s brother. Not biological but he was adopted." She explained.
Rhys and Damien exchanged looks and a look passed between the brothers.
"Wait, isn’t he the guy you were looking for?" Matteo chimed in.
Beatrix froze and she flushed with embarrassment. How could she forget that Matteo had seen Rhys’ pictures before.
She had asked him once to help her to find him.
Beatrix let out an awkward laugh, "Yes, such a small world isn’t it?"
Matteo raised his eyebrows but said nothing.
Remo strode towards Damien and snarled at him,
"Such a shame that it wasn’t me who put you there."
Damien chuckled, "Well-"
"Remo behave!" Beatrix snapped at his brother, interrupting him.
Beatrix’s cheeks flushed when everyone’s gaze fell on her.
"W-well..he is still recovering—you don’t have to be rude." She added nervously. This was the first time she was raising her voice on her brother.
Remo glared at Damien before he turned towards his sister, "Fine!"
Damien chuckled again and patted the empty space next to him on the bed. "Come sit with me, Beatrix. I missed you."
Beatrix hesitated before slowly making her way over to Damien’s bedside. She sat down carefully, not wanting to disturb him.
"How are you feeling today?" Beatrix asked softly.
"I’m fine now that you’re here." Damien replied.
Matteo snorted, "Please. This is disgusting."
Beatrix blushed at Damien’s words and quickly turned to her other brother, trying to deflect the attention from herself. "Leave him alone, Matteo. Can’t you see he’s still recovering?"
Matteo held up his hands in surrender. "Fine, fine. I was just joking. No need to get defensive."
Remo crossed his arms and leaned against the wall, still scowling at Damien. "I still don’t trust him," he said.
Beatrix sighed and stood up, determined to mediate the situation. "Remo, please. Damien has done nothing to deserve your mistrust. He’s been nothing but kind to me and I’m going to marry him."
Remo opened his mouth to argue, but Beatrix held up a hand to stop him. "I’m not saying you have to like him or even be friends with him. But can you at least try to be civil and respect the fact that he’s still at the hospital?"
Remo gritted his teeth and looked away, clearly unhappy but unwilling to argue with his sister. "Fine," he said through clenched teeth.
Beatrix smiled and patted his arm. "Thank you. Now, let’s all just try to have a peaceful visit and let Damien rest, okay?"
Her brothers nodded and the tension in the room slowly dissipated.
Beatrix sat back down next to Damien and they all spent the rest of the visit making small talk and catching up on each other’s lives.
But Beatrix realized that her father and Rhys were abnormally quiet. Both of them seemed to be deep in thoughts.
His father was stealing glances at Rhys as if he was trying to remember where he knew him.
"Rhys!" Beatrix shouted his name, breaking him out of his stupor.
"Hmm?" He glanced at her. Clearly he didn’t hear her talking to him.
"Are you okay? You looked deep in thought."
Rhys’ nodded, "Yeah I’m fine."
Beatrix sighed, clearly she didn’t believe him.
"So when are they discharging me? I want to go home."
Damien said, averting the attention from Rhys.
"I will have to speak to the doctors first. You have improved. I’m sure they will allow us to go home ."
Damien nodded, "I’m sick of the smell of this place."
"We don’t have a home anymore brother. Remember?" Rhys said.
Damien groaned, "Shit I forgot!"
"We can always buy a new house." Beatrix shrugged.
"We need to find a secluded place for you to recover. The wolves in the family are growing restless. They want to know if you’re dead or not before they strike." Rhys said.
Damien nodded, "Okay it’s not safe for me to stay here anymore." He said looking at Remo.
"I don’t like you Niarchos but my sister fucking does and I’m not going to hurt her. So you shouldn’t look at me as if I will sneak in to kill you at night. If I want you dead I will be putting a bullet in your head right now."
Damien rolled his eyes, "I know. That’s why I’m entrusting you to find me a hideout until I recover."
Remo chuckled darkly, "Me?"
Damien’s lips curved into a smile underneath his bandage, "Yes , after all we are going to be family soon."
Remo snorted, "Hmm..I will think about it. I don’t think I want my sister to be married to an ugly disfigured man. Maybe we should discuss this marriage alliance thing again."
"Remo...." Matteo warned slowly.
"What?! I don’t give a fucking shit about some bloody oath. I will just find that shit of paper and burn it." He rolled his eyes.
"I love him, Remo. I’m going to marry him. The sooner you accept it, the better." Beatrix glared at her brother.
"Whatever." He muttered underneath his breath.
"Don’t mind Remo Beatrix. He just wants what’s best for you. " Matteo sighed.
"Well then he should accept that Damien is one I want."
Beatrix added softly.
