Chapter 109: Leave me alone
Damien grinned at Beatrix, grateful for her support. "Thanks, Bea. I’ll do my best to heal up as quickly as possible so we can be together as soon as possible."
Remo rolled his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest. "Whatever. But you better hope the disfigurement doesn’t scare my sister too much."
Damien’s grin faded and he looked down at his hands. He knew he wasn’t the same person he was before the explosion, but he hoped that Beatrix could see past the scars and love him for who he was on the inside.
"I understand your concerns, Remo," Damien said quietly. "But I promise to do everything I can to make your sister happy. She means the world to me."
Remo sighed and uncrossed his arms. "Fine. I’ll help you find a place to stay. But if you hurt my sister, I’ll make sure you pay for it."
"I won’t hurt her, I promise," Damien said earnestly.
Matteo stepped in, trying to diffuse the tension between the two men. "Okay, let’s focus on finding a safe place for Damien right now. We can worry about the rest later."
Beatrix gave Damien a reassuring smile and squeezed his hand. "I know you won’t hurt me, Damien. I trust you completely."
Damien stiffened, trust was such a big word. She trusted him even though she shouldn’t because he was going to be the one to hurt her the most when the time comes.
"Papa are you okay?" Beatrix couldn’t help but frown. Her father was abnormally quiet.
His father just nodded, "I’m good."
He turned to Rhys and the suspicion in his voice was adamant.
"Are you sure I haven’t seen you somewhere before?"
Her father questioned.
"Your eyes...you look exactly like him." Her father muttered the last part, his voice barely a whisper but she heard him.
Rhys’s eyes widened in shock, before his lips curled into a mischievous smirk, "Have you? I don’t remember then."
Beatrix’s father stared at him for a moment longer, then seemed to shake off his suspicion. "Well, I think I might be mistaking you for someone, "kid."
Rhys’ face turned ashen and Beatrix found his body trembling; it was almost as if he was having one of those episodes.
"Rhys!" Damien shouted and Rhys seemed to wake up from whatever horror of memory he was having.
"Excuse me," he left the room
Beatrix watched in confusion as Rhys left the room, his face pale and shaken. She turned to Damien, who was looking at Rhys with a mixture of worry and sadness.
"What was that about?" Beatrix asked.
Damien sighed and shook his head. "Rhys has a lot of demons from his past. He’s had a tough life and sometimes, when he’s reminded of certain things, it can be really hard for him to cope."
Beatrix’s heart ached for Rhys. She couldn’t imagine what he must have gone through to be so affected by a simple question.
"Do you know what’s troubling him?" she asked Damien.
He shook his head. "No, he doesn’t like to talk about it. "
Beatrix frowned, wondering what could have caused Rhys to react so strongly.
As they sat and talked, Beatrix’s mind kept drifting back to her father’s words. "You look exactly like him." Who did he mean? "
She resolved to ask her father about it later, when they were alone. For now, she had to find Rhys.
She was worried something might happen to him. He looked distressed when he was leaving.
"Ermm...you guys probably have some mafia business to discuss right? I will leave you guys alone."
Without waiting for their response she walked out of the room to look for Rhys with the help of the two of the security guards.
As she walked through the hospital, Beatrix couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that had settled in her stomach. She had been looking for Rhys for 15 minutes now but she couldn’t seem to find him anywhere.
She had checked all of the usual places - the cafeteria, the waiting rooms, even the chapel - but there was no sign of him. It was as if he had vanished into thin air.
Just when she was about to give up and head back to her Damien’s room, she heard a faint sound coming from one of the empty patient rooms. She followed the sound and found Rhys sitting on the floor, his elbows resting on his knees and his face buried in his hands, his fingers tangled in his hair.
The atmosphere in the room was cold and thick with the same tension that filled the air when he woke up from his nightmares.
She could feel the sadness and loneliness emanating from him, as if it was pushing her away.
"Rhys..?" She asked with a soft voice, taking small cautious steps towards him but he didn’t respond, didn’t even look up at her .
Beatrix stopped when she reached next to him and reached her hand out to touch his shoulder but it felt like a knife had been pierced straight in her heart when he pulled away.
"Just leave me alone Beatrix" he muttered against his hands; his voice cold and distant.
Beatrix sighed, she knew he was shutting her out. But what could have possibly caused him to relapse right now? She knew his nightmares were at night but during the day? She had never seen him like this before.
She took a deep breath and reminded herself not to get affected by his harsh tone. He needed her and she was going to be there for him.
"You know I’m not going to leave you alone." She said to him, speaking in a gentle tone. She hoped that, even if he did not allow her to physically comfort him, her voice might provide some solace.
Rhys scoffed, shaking his head and his voice was bitter as he dropped his hands and stood from the floor
"Fine. You stay here, I’ll leave"
He started to walk towards the door, and she tried to remind herself that he was hurting; that this was his way of pushing her away when he was upset, when he didn’t want anyone to see how broken he was because he felt vulnerable.
"Okay, go ahead then but I’m going to follow you" she said , he was crazy if he thought she was going to leave him alone to suffer. She wanted to be with him, comfort him and she wouldn’t let him scare her away.
Rhys paused and his shoulders tensed as he turned around, gritting his frustrated voice through his teeth
"Why can’t you just fucking listen for once? I don’t want you near me - leave me alone. You’re fucking annoying!"
Beatrix stiffened. Hurt. His words hurt. But taking a deep breath, Beatrix forced out a smile.
He was hurt, and it’s normal for people to say hurtful things when they were hurt.
"I know you don’t mean that, so you’re going to have to try harder" she said, holding her arms out at her sides and trying to keep her voice calm and hide the pain in it.
"If you think for one second I’m going to leave you to suffer alone when I have no idea what is going on with you - then you obviously don’t know me very well."
"You don’t need to bother love, I’m fine - I want to be alone" he said, clenching his fists at his sides as she took a step towards him.
"You’re not fine" she shook her head, taking another step towards him and watched him struggle to keep the hardened cold expression on his face.
Rhys glared at her as she came to stand in front of him. She could see how hard he was trying to act tough but he was slowly breaking apart.
Those eyes. It hid so many emotions. Emotions she wished she had superpowers to decipher.
She knew she should leave him alone, maybe it was probably the best thing to do but she just wanted to comfort him. To be by his side. To show him that he didn’t have to go through all of this alone now.
He had her.
Beatrix reached her hands up, keeping her movements slow and apprehensive while his eyes darted down to watch what she was planning on doing.
She breathed a sigh of relief when he didn’t flinch when she held his cheeks.
"You don’t have to push me away, just let me be here for you. I won’t ask anything and we don’t even have to talk about it." She said softly as if she was coaxing a kid.
"Why do you make it so hard to hate you?!" He bellowed and raked his fingers through his hair, gripping the roots.
Beatrix blinked, "Wha-"
She was interrupted by him silencing her with his mouth. His kiss was rough and deep as if he wanted to punish her for defying him.
"What the rutting hell is going on here?!" A familiar angry voice yelled and they pulled apart.
Panting hard, Beatrix turned around to look at the person and the color drained from her face.
A/N: I love reading your comments guys. Don’t be shy tell me what you guys think Beatrix’s dad did to Rhys? Who caught them? It makes me happy when I see you catch the little clues I leave in my books hehehe.
