Chapter 107: Mastermind

Chapter 107: Mastermind

Damien looked at his brother, Rhys, who was seated in a chair next to his hospital bed. Rhys looked terrible, with dark circles under his eyes and a haggard expression on his face.

Damien knew that Rhys had been struggling to sleep since he had been hospitalized.

"Hey, bro," Damien said softly, trying to sound as cheerful as possible. "How are you holding up?"

Rhys let out a deep sigh and ran a hand through his hair. "I’ve been better," he said. "It’s just hard seeing you like this, you know? I feel helpless."

Damien reached out and gave Rhys’s hand a reassuring squeeze. "I know it’s tough, but try not to worry too much. The doctors are doing everything they can to make me better, and I’m going to be okay."

Rhys nodded, but Damien could see the doubt and concern in his eyes. "I know you’re trying to be strong for me," Rhys said. "But I can’t help feeling guilty. I wish I can do more for you."

Damien shook his head. "You have done enough and besides, you’ve been such a great support for me. I don’t know what I would do without you here."

Rhys gave him a weak smile. "Thanks, Damien. That means a lot to me."

I just want to get out of here and get back to normal life," Damien said.

Rhys nodded in agreement. "I know you do. But you have to make sure you’re fully recovered before they discharge you. You don’t want to risk your health."

"I know, I know," Damien said, frustration creeping into his voice. "It’s just hard to be stuck in here, you know? I feel like I’m missing out on everything."

Rhys patted Damien’s hand. "I know it’s tough, but try to stay positive. The doctors are doing everything they can to get you better as soon as possible."

Damien nodded, trying to push down the feelings of hopelessness that threatened to overwhelm him. "I’ll try," he said. "It’s just hard sometimes."

Rhys gave him a sympathetic look. "I know it is. But you’re not alone. I’m here for you, and so is Beatrix. We’ll get through this together."

Speaking about Beatrix, he hadn’t seen her today.

"Where is Beatrix?" Damien looked around the hospital room and panicked when he didn’t notice her around.

He had gotten used to seeing her around anytime he woke up and now that she wasn’t around he was afraid that she had left him.

"Her family came around and she is going to meet them with Xavier."

Rhys replied simply.

Damien furrowed his brow, "Her father and brothers?"

"Yes."

Damien nodded, "Okay. She probably misses them. I’m glad they’re here now."

Rhys glanced at his brother and sighed, "Aren’t you afraid that they would take her away?"

"No." Damien simply replied.

"Why? You sound almost certain as if they can’t take her away. You haven’t married her yet and she is still a Quinn."

Damien’s lips curled into a smirk, "Well I made them sign a blood oath. She is mine until death do us apart."

Rhys’ eyes widened in shock, "You planned everything didn’t you?"

Of course he did. He had been planning this for years; there was no way he was going to leave room for this to happen.

"Yes."

Rhys shoulders’ sagged and he raked his fingers through his hair.

"But you didn’t plan to fall in love with her did you?"

Damien stiffened, he was a mastermind and had laid down his chessboard with his chess pieces but he had miscalculated.

"Love was not a part of the plan," Damien admitted, his voice laced with regret. "But sometimes, things don’t go as we expect them to. And when I met her, I couldn’t help but be drawn to her. She was smart, kind, and beautiful. I didn’t mean for it to happen, but it did."

Rhys nodded, understanding dawning in his eyes. "So what are you going to do now?"

Damien sighed and sat down at the table, resting his head in his hands. "I don’t know. I never intended for things to get this complicated. But I can’t just turn off my feelings for her. I care about her deeply."

"You have to make a choice," Rhys said gently.

"You can either follow your heart and risk everything you’ve worked for, or you can stick to the plan and potentially lose something even more valuable. It’s not an easy decision, but it’s one that you have to make."

Damien nodded, "We are both screwed aren’t we?"

Rhys chuckled, "Yes brother we are. Wanting the forbidden fruit we shouldn’t have."

"Hmmm..." Damien hummed in response.

"What about you? You didn’t even know her identity when you met her. All of this is fucked up isn’t it?"

Rhys shrugged, "I might hate her father but she is nothing like that monster. I just hope she will be able to handle the truth when the time comes."

The door to the hospital room opened and one of the security guards walked in.

"Boss, Miss Quinn and her family have arrived here should we let them in?"

Damien glanced at Rhys and he saw him frozen. His face turned ashen. For the first time he would be meeting the man who had ruined his life. Who also happened to be the father of the woman he was in love with.

"Do you want to hide?" Damien asked softly.

Rhys shook his head and took a deep breath. "No, I need to face him. I can’t let him have that power over me anymore. I just wish I could be stronger, more sure of myself."

Damien placed a hand on his shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze. "You’re strong enough. And remember, you have me. I will be right here with you, every step of the way."

"Let them in." Rhys replied.

The security guard nodded and left the room, leaving Damien and Rhys alone to prepare for the confrontation. Rhys took another deep breath and stood up, determined to face his fears head on.
