Chapter 95: Chapter 94

Chapter 94

Melisca woke up late the next day. Though the waking bell disturbed her, she continued to sleep after it rang three times.

Carmen, their dorm leader, called for her, but she waved her off. It didn’t go past her ears when she heard some of the girls say that she’s becoming lazy because of her high status and being regarded as a new star trainee. She did not pay attention to it and got back to sleep.

When she pulled herself up, the room was empty, and she bet everyone was already at the cafeteria or in the arena. It was 7:00 am, and she was still in her sleep attire.

She yawned and stretched. She stood up and grabbed her towel and had a quick shower.

Despite having an early off yesterday from the arena, she hasn’t relaxed at all for doing a lot of thinking, calculating, and everything. She was trying to come up with a plan until midnight. Trying to think of possible ways, but her head was empty. She hasn’t had any solid ideas yet. It was making her anxious and frustrated.

Right now, she finished ordering and looked around for a vacant seat. There were still a lot of people in the cafeteria, but mostly were finishing up and exiting the place. It was almost 7:30. And she hasn’t started her meal.

She saw Lorna at one of the tables, eating alone.

Melisca took a deep breath to gather her thoughts and stay rational that she had to do this to take a step in her plans. She had to set aside any hindrance, even her emotions. Fake it ’til she made it.

"Lorna." She said as she placed her tray on the table in front of her. She looked up at her with a solemn face, then gradually, a smile stretched her lips.

"Liz, how are you? I went to your dorm earlier, but they said you were still sleeping. I didn’t want to disturb you as you were resting." Lorna’s greeting.

She was glad that the girl tried to reach out for her even if she was pushing her away. That’s great then.

She pulled the chair across her and sat herself down. She can see that Lorna was almost finished with her breakfast.

"I survived." Melisca started on her breakfast.

Lorna scanned her face, trying to see if she was in pain or anything. "Yeah, you look fine. And there’s no bump in your head anymore."

"I put some ice on it when you were all in the Arena." She meant ice-cold water when she was under the shower.

"That’s good then. How about your other injuries? You had a cut."

"I already cleaned it up and put bandages on it."

"You didn’t put any ointments or—"

"—I survive worse, Lorna. I’m a huntress even before this." She plopped a food to her mouth and looked at the girl.

"Right." Lorna ate slower. She was trying to finish her food with Liz. She felt better that Liz was talking to her again. "How was it? Fighting one of them."

She swallowed the food first before answering the girl. "Challenging." Better than humans because she can exert her natural strength without worry. Because mostly holding back was making it harder to fight. "Do you have a map of this place? I just noticed that there wasn’t any exit route if ever there’s an emergency, like, fire or something."

"No. That’s why everyone was so meticulous and careful not to cause any property damage."

"Why not? Safety can never be guaranteed, no matter what the precautions are. Anyone would die if they were trapped."

Lorna nodded. Liz had a point. It was actually alarming. "Honestly, there was one before. But they changed everything. That’s all I know."

There was one before.’ Melisca took note of that.

"You survived longer than anyone in the cage." There was a glow in Lorna’s eyes. "You’re amazing." The awe in her voice was obvious.

"Thanks." She doesn’t know what else to say to that. She was used to compliments, and it was uncomfortable at times. "But anyway, what were behind those doors in the tunnel?"

"It’s where those supernatural beings were kept."

"What kept them there? They were strong." She asked nonchalantly while munching some piece of meat.

"Oh, they were consistently kept under the chemicals that won’t allow them to use their extra abilities. Like strength. And vampires were blindfolded by electricity, so they won’t be able to compel someone. If they try to remove it, they would be electrocuted and bled their eyes out. And because they were under the influence of ABD, they won’t heal." Her face scrunched up. "It was disgusting."

"So, they were, like, put in a cell?"

"Yes, if they touch the bar, it would electrocute them."

"Has anyone ever escaped before?" She knew she sounded curious about the details, but she had to take a chance.

"Almost. That’s what I heard. I don’t know. But it was a brave move."

"When did it happen?" She reached for her chocolate drink on the table. She was about to be finished.

"Hmm. I think it was five years ago. They were luckily caught by a member of the committee."

"Committee?"

"The group of higher-ups. The highest ranked members."

Melisca nodded. "And what happened to those who failed to escape?"

Lorna shrugged her shoulders. "I don’t know."

"How did they almost escape?"

"I don’t know." She shook her head. Her ponytail was wiggling at the top of her nape.

"Lorna, I’ve been wanting to ask this." Melisca came closer to the table. "What’s the goal in experimenting them? I thought you just want them dead."

Lorna took a huge breath. "That’s what I thought also. But they were experimenting to create something that could kill them. It’s just all the same. And making those discoveries were helpful and made everything easier. We can truly end their existence."

"Why? Can’t they just coexist with us?"

Lorna bit her lower lip. She was getting anxious of Liz’s questions. "Coexist. They killed your family, right? So, do you want them to live with us? Can you allow them to take more families in the future?"

Melisca pulled herself back from the table and lean to her chair. Right. Her fists were clenched under the table. The hunters who killed her mom were coexisting with her and the wolves who killed her dad was still breathing out there. She hasn’t truly achieved anything yet.

"Lorwey." A stern voice called her name. It was Macky. "Loriena." He was standing at the head of their table and looking at them. Then his eyes turned back to Melisca. His expression was serious and looks like he had something urgent to say. "Please follow me immediately."
