The Runaway Huntress -

Chapter 72: Chapter 71
Chapter 71
Among the three of them, Lorna was the first to notice the commotion from the entrance. Her eyes widened when she saw her mother. She followed her parents’ movements towards the food counter.
Melisca didn’t have to look at what the fuss was and what made Lorna’s reaction.
Carmen turned her body around since she was facing the wall and her back was to everyone.
"Why is she here?" Lorna mumbled. She thought her mom wouldn’t be coming to the mansion anytime soon.
"That’s Dr. Vera. Everyone had to go through her before we came here." Carmen stated.
"I know. Because that’s my mom and my dad." Lorna said with a sneer.
Melisca was on her last bite. Then she drank her chocolate drink. She grabbed a tissue from the tissue box on the center table and wiped her lips. She finished everything on her tray at last.
She looked at Lorna’s face. There was a bit of hostility in her tone. It seemed like she had a grudge towards her parents or something.
Vera instantly saw where her daughter was and waved at her to come to them. She knew her daughter didn’t want to, but she got to comply with her. Especially since everyone can see their every move.
With a frustrated sigh and an eye-roll, Lorna stood up begrudgingly. "I’m sorry, Liz." Her face was contorted in annoyance. "I need to go. See you tomorrow. I’ll come to your dorm to get you."
"Don’t worry, Lori. I’ll be with her." Carmen with her cheerful voice made Lorna glare.
"Don’t call me Lori." She spat before stepping away from their table and sauntered to her parents. She thinks the woman is happy that she can finally have her friend Liz alone. She doesn’t want Carmen to snatch Liz from her.
"Why does it feel like she doesn’t like me?" Carmen mumbled instantly when Lorna was already a meter away from them.
Melisca doesn’t have any solid ideas either. She shrugged her shoulders at the woman.
"All right. Anyway, we start to gather at 7:30 on the field. To do stretches and if there were any announcements." Carmen resumed explaining things to her. "But for you, a newbie. As Lori said earlier, there’ll be discussions first. Then a coach would like to see your moves. They would then decide at what level you should start. There were three levels here totally as your training goes." She raised her hand in a fist and counted each finger out into three. "A newbie, junior, and senior. Do you want me to elaborate on the standards of each level?"
"No need." Melisca’s mere answer as she leaned back in her chair and crossed her legs under the table.
"Okay. I guess that’s pretty much all of the basic things that you need to know for now. The mentors can tell you a lot more. They should be the ones to explain some things."
Melisca nodded, and she looked at her wristwatch. It’s almost 8:00 pm. There were still people entering the cafeteria, but most of them were gone already. That leaves a lot of vacant tables then.
"I didn’t expect there were this many hunters here." She commented and put Lorna’s plates on top of hers and piled their tray together. She noticed earlier that when people were finished with their food, they would put the tray at the nearest tray cart, and cafeteria personnel would arrange the soiled plates in a pile.
"Oh, there were other camps like this around the world. Not that many though."
"Really?" That was news for her. She did not expect that the hunter organization was that big and had branches abroad.
"Yes. They kept recruiting because there weren’t enough hunters to survive. Do you want to go back to the dorm now?" Carmen asked as she stood up.
"Yes. I’m tired."
Both brought their food trays to the stand and exited the cafeteria. They were walking side by side, and Carmen asked her something.
"Why do you want to be a hunter, Liz?"
"To avenge my family." Her direct reply.
Carmen didn’t appear to be surprised. "I know some people with that same reason." As they were crossing the lobby, several people tried to approach Melisca.
They wanted to get to know her, but she waved them off and said that she was tired enough to talk to anybody. She was thankful then that Carmen helped her dismiss them more nicely.
She wasn’t interested in making lots of friends or even making any. That would only mean more nosy people wanting to get involved with her. And she wouldn’t be able to move freely if someone kept approaching her anytime. She already had Lorna, and her nosiness was enough.
"Thank you for that." Melisca mumbled as they walked the hallway towards their dorm.
"How does it feel to be the instant celebrity?" Carmen asked with a bit of a sneer in her tone but in an amused face.
That somehow annoyed Melisca. It seemed like the woman was taunting her. It was clear in her actions that she didn’t like the attention, so she didn’t have to ask that of her. "I hate it." She hissed and heaved a deep breath to calm her nerves.
"Are you ready to get that pretty face scarred on the battlefield? I’m sure a lot would love to try." Her sweet voice was laced with venom underneath.
Melisca snorted and smirked at that thought. "They can dare." She didn’t know what Carmen was up to in befriending her. But it was clear that this woman had a contradicting smile. She can sense the hostility in her words.
"How about you? Why are you here?" She repeated the question to her.
"I’m competitive. I’m always up for a challenge. And this hunter thing was one of the most thrilling jobs I can imagine."
"Why not try to be a terrorist? You’d always be hunted by the government and bombs were just like passing balls to the soldiers and vice versa. That’s more thrilling, right?" She gave her a sweet smile and Carmen eyed her coldly. Her face was void of any emotion and she widened the curve of her lips. Taunting the girl more and then looking straight ahead. She walked faster so that she could have a shower and sleep early.
Half an hour later, Melisca just finished everything. She was ready to roll on her bed. The room had a dim light and each nightstand had a lampshade. Some were already fast asleep and the others were still talking at the corner, circling in a group. She noticed that Carmen was among them. The group all glanced in her direction at once. It was like they were sizing her up.
Melisca grunted. A lot had happened that day. From purchasing a new weapon, killing the hunters, and then meeting a lot of people with such attitudes. Humans were really tiresome beings. With their insecurities and whatnot attitudes. She can just roll her eyes at them all. Despite she was half-human herself, she knows that she is mostly cold towards others.
She did not turn on her lampshade like the other girls. She doesn’t need it. Aside from her clear night vision, the light from their lamps was enough for human eyes. She was wearing pyjamas, provided by the management. Together with a thick blanket, towels, and other amenities. She found them on her bed when she came back after dinner. Also, the black uniform and boots. Everything was already provided.
As she lay down on the bed, she tucked a knife under her pillow just for extra precaution. She closed her eyes and tried to sleep early. But a few minutes passed, and she kept moving and rolling, changing position. At last, she laid on her back and propped a hand under her head. She felt restless. The murmurs around and everyone’s presence in the same room for the night were making her uneasy. She stared at the blank ceiling.
"Hey, it’s almost 10:00. Let’s go to bed." One of the girls said and they scrambled away to their own beds.
After a minute, Melisca heard a faint consecutive sound of switches from the hallway. The lights had been turned off.
The black ceiling that she was staring at suddenly had a projection of a night sky. It came from a device hanging against the wall at the far corner. The night projection was a bonus for her. She felt like she was at the top of the mountain, stargazing. She heard some girls saying that it’s what makes them sleep faster. And could be for her too.
The stars were twinkling and there were even meteor showers. The side of her lips curved up as her eyes were glued to the illusion above her. What’s gonna happen tomorrow? She can’t help wondering. She raised her other hand, imagining that she could touch the twinkling stars. Mom, dad, could you be watching me? Do you know what I’m doing? She felt a bit of sleepiness entered her system. She placed the hand back on her stomach. I hope to see you both even just in my dreams. She closed her eyes and let sleep take over.
