The Runaway Huntress -

Chapter 71: Chapter 70
Chapter 70
Melisca was too focused on her food and did not mind the surroundings. Even when Carmen was coming, she did not see that. And Lorna almost jumped on her seat.
"Sorry for barging in like that." Carmen pulled the chair and settled herself down.
"What supernatural being?" She was curious enough not to pay attention to Lorna’s glare. The girl must be cursing the newcomer on her head. No doubt about it.
"Any kinds. But most of the time they are vampires, and werewolves. There were other shapeshifters too. And recently, the most interesting one? Was an elf." Carmen explained with a thrill in her eyes.
"An elf?" Melisca and Lorna repeated in unison.
She was surprised too with Lorna’s reaction.
"There wasn’t one during my time here before." The girl explained as she looked at her, knowing what’s on her mind.
"It was just brought on the field two weeks ago. Most of the girls didn’t want to hurt him." Then Carmen sighed delightfully. Her face appeared to be daydreaming over something. "He was too handsome to make him suffer."
Lorna and Melisca eyed each other across the table.
"Anyway." Carmen shook her head, waking herself up. "The guys were all about wanting to hurt him, but most of them were no match for the elf."
"How did they capture one?" Melisca was now curious about the hunters’ way of doing their hunts.
Elves were hard to find, though they were mostly in the forest and mountains most of the time because their features were too distinguishable. With their pointed ears, pale, glowing skin, and white hair. They had towering heights too, even for their female equivalent. For their abilities, they weren’t as fast as other supernatural beings or as strong. What was the most amazing about them was their healing powers. They had the fastest regeneration and could convey it to others as well. They can extend their healing to anyone. They were also considered the earth guardians. For the supernatural world, elves were a sacred race.
She had encountered one before when she was abroad for a vacation. She tried a paragliding activity. Unfortunately, her parachute got a hole because of some bird, and she crashed deep in the forest. That was one of her most thrilling accidents, and though it was kind of fun for her, it was dangerous as well. She doesn’t want to try that activity again.
Then she happened to see an elf from afar. That was a female elf. She was truly beautiful. Of course, she did not reveal herself to her. She doesn’t know what could be the elf’s reaction if she sees her. Melisca knew in herself that she had to keep her identity from other races as well. They were one of the gentlest and kindest beings, but they were fierce too when their lives were in danger. And to know that one of them was captured, how cruel the fate of that elf could be?
Carmen shrugged her shoulders. "I don’t know. No one knows. Only the white hunters did and their trainees, maybe."
"White hunters?"
"There are different hunters for each race." Lorna chimed in to elaborate more details. "It depends upon your potential and where the management would put you. But mostly, everybody had the same training in their first week. Anyway, white hunters are for elves, yellow for the wolves, and red obviously for vampires, blue for sirens, and there were many more to mention."
"You would learn them later if you survived longer." Carmen added.
Hmm. It seemed like this woman was underestimating me. Everyone is. She can’t help but have that thought.
"She certainly would." Lorna defended, pointing a finger to Carmen’s face. "Never underestimate her."
"That’s rude." Carmen grabbed Lorna’s hand and pushed it down on the table.
"You don’t know her. So don’t say that." Lorna pulled her hand from Carmen’s grip and picked up her utensils to resume eating.
"How about you, Lori? I heard rumors that you ran away because, as they said, you can’t survive." She was twirling her fork to the pasta on her plate.
Melisca wasn’t sure if Carmen was turning out to be rude or if she just doesn’t care about what the others would say. She thinks she might like her guts for stating things bravely. Just like her.
"Oh, please. I grew up above. In this mansion." Lorna rolled her eyes and waved her hand like a princess. "And I had always been here multiple times. I don’t like it anymore. And as for the trainings? It wasn’t my forte to do the actions. Whether how I survive is my choice."
That wasn’t the answer Melisca was expecting. Though it was full of brattiness, her words had such spunk that anyone who could hear it would have their blood boil in envy and unfairness of such treatment. Well, what can they do? Lorna was born with such parents and background. It wasn’t her fault that life was easier for her to make her choices.
She did not deny her being a spoiled brat. Melisca wanted to cheer her for that. As she glanced at Carmen, the woman was left speechless and with a mouth slightly agape from Lorna’s answers.
Then, after a second, Carmen snorted and laughed amusingly. "That’s nice. It’s good to be friends with you then, Lori."
Lorna was confused, she clearly did not expect that the woman would find her amusing. She said those so to annoy her but it was the opposite from what she aimed to make Carmen feel.
"What’s nice about it?" Lorna wanted to bite her instead of her food.
Melisca had a small smile. Looks like Lorna would be busier with Carmen around. "What’s going to happen tomorrow?" She asked, either of the girls could answer.
"Training. Always training." Carmen was the first to answer. "Except for Sundays. Rest day. Though there was nothing much we can do. We aren’t allowed to get back to civilization ’till we graduate here."
Melisca noticed Lorna was restraining a smile as she eyed the girl across her. She was focused with the food on her plate but obviously listening to Carmen’s explanation. What does this girl have on mind?
"Should I be able to join the training tomorrow?"
"Not directly. There would be a lot of discussion about supernatural beings. We should have knowledge about our enemies too before we face them. About their weaknesses." Lorna was the one to answer.
"Would they tackle about their origins too?" Melisca asked, just thinking of listening to that discussion already had her mind excited but also bored for such delay.
"No. There were only theories anyway so it wasn’t that important. They would focus on a beings’ powers, habitat, or places that they were often found." Carmen drank her canned juice after saying those.
"That would be such an interesting topic. But would they be discussing facts or just from what’s on the internet, or from movies or books?" If they were only from common knowledge on the internet, then she won’t waste her energy to listen eagerly about it then. Since not everything online was true and she doesn’t want to be more confused. She doesn’t have a lot of knowledge about other races though, or even full details about werewolves, but the little things she knew were all facts.
"Nothing’s a lie here, Liz." Lorna mumbled. "What would be discussed here were all true. They were legit information."
"From where?" She can’t stop her curiosity.
"We don’t know that." Carmen answered since Lorna kept her mouth shut.
The girl must’ve known something. Of course, she grew up here.
Carmen eyed Lorna too.
"That source remains with the investigative team." Lorna spoke up. "We were just ordered to where should we go and hunt our target."
"So, were there any other things we can use against them?" Melisca asked, she wanted them to discuss about the poison needle. Maybe they had a name for it.
"Oh, haven’t I told you before about the Anti-superno?" Lorna started.
"Anti-superno?"
"The syringe that we used before." Lorna wanted to say that the thing they used to kill the wolves, but she doesn’t want to spill that information in front of Carmen.
"It’s called Anti-superno?"
"Yes. Maybe I haven’t mentioned its name to you." Lorna was confused as well, trying to remember if she did or not.
"You already used the Anti-superno outside?" Carmen’s eyes widened. "So, it truly works on them?"
"Of course. It wouldn’t have a name if it was a failed experiment." Lorna wanted to glare at the woman’s remarks. Not believing in their own creation.
"So, you already killed one? Or at least you killed one for experience." Carmen’s disbelief was showing on her face.
Melisca didn’t want to elaborate anything about her killings outside. And it was up to Lorna to tell her own part. She doesn’t care if the girl would deny it or let Carmen believe that Lorna killed one or any of them.
Lorna glanced to Liz’s direction. It was clear that she wouldn’t say anything as she remained her head bowed on her plate, enjoying the remaining food on her tray.
"It’s a long story. Besides, we’re here to discuss things to Liz, not about what we did outside." Lorna said instead to change the subject.
"Yeah, yeah. You’re right." Then she stared at Liz’s tray. "Excuse me. But, would you eat all of that?" Carmen noticed that Melisca already finished half of the food on her tray and it looked like she wasn’t about to stop anytime soon. And there wasn’t even a sign that she was full yet.
"Do you want some of her food?" Lorna chimed in before Melisca could answer. She was thankful because she was currently enjoying her roasted chicken.
"No, no. I’m fine."
"Good. She won’t share any of them, anyway. Not until she’s full." Lorna already knew some facts about her, especially towards her appetite.
Carmen and Lorna were about to be done on their meal, and Melisca was only halfway. No one minds though and they continue to discuss some things for her.
After a few more minutes, Melisca consumed all her main course. And now she was on her dessert.
"Wow." Carmen gasped in awe. "How could you eat a lot but managed to stay in perfect shape?"
Lorna snorted. Exactly what she asked Liz earlier in her apartment, while they were having lunch.
"Just exercise." Melisca’s short reply. But there was doubt in Carmen’s expression. She doesn’t care about it though. It seemed like a common topic for girls. Was it that a big deal for them?
Carmen eyed the other girl.
"You heard her. And you see the result no matter how she eats a lot." Lorna explained further.
"Right. I guess, no pain, no gain."
Melisca nodded her head, not wanting to open her mouth to answer. She was savoring the cold dessert in her tongue.
"Yeah. Exactly." Lorna directly agreed. Though she doesn’t want to align her thoughts with Carmen, but what the woman said was unquestionably true.
Vera entered the cafeteria with her husband, Lawrenz. She held his arm and nodded to the people who greeted her.
