Chapter 70: Chapter 69

Chapter 69

Melisca glanced at the girl. She was a bit surprised that she still had her phone. Oh, that wasn’t fair. And she started to feel what the others felt then. Lorna was exempt from all the rules. It just now dawned on her. She shook her head from all the nonsense thought.

"Dad, I’m having dinner with Liz." Lorna stated with the phone in her ear.

"Liz? Who’s Liz?" Melisca can hear him loud and clear, though Lorna did not put it in the loudspeaker.

"Melisca. She goes by Liz."

Oh, Lorna was the one who was forcing that nickname on her. It was from Kaliz. If only her real name wasn’t revealed by that truth drug, she would have preferred to use it then.

And she remembered that truth drug again. It was one of the hunter’s creations, along with ABD and that poison needle, which she still didn’t know what it was called.

As they were walking towards their destination, which was on the other side of the lobby, people kept glancing at them, and many were shocked to see the girl beside her, using a phone. They were getting unwanted attention.

She roamed her eyes everywhere while her ears were still at Lorna’s conversation. They finally reached the reception area. There were wide stairs in front of the lobby where the reception desk was facing. The stairs were going down, and a huge black metal door was standing proudly. Whatever was in there, Melisca couldn’t hear anything, even if she strains her hearing ability.

"I’ll talk to you after dinner, I promise!" Lorna exclaimed frustratingly.

Melisca glanced at the girl’s outburst. It looks like someone was about to have a tantrum. She wanted to scold the girl not to talk like that towards her parents, but who was she to say that to Lorna? Besides, even in herself, she knew that she was stubborn too. She doesn’t have to get involved in such things then. She had no right. And it was their family. Not hers.

"Fine, Loriena. We need to have this talk. If you won’t face me until 8:00pm tonight because of your friend, then you will regret it." His tone had a deadly warning. Even from the other line, she can feel that he wasn’t bluffing at all.

"I said I promise." Lorna repeated stubbornly.

Melisca wanted to talk to Lorna about going to her dad instead of being with her, but then she didn’t want to interrupt their conversation. And it was about to end already. It’s the girl’s choice then.

The call finally ended, and Lorna exhaled loudly. "Barely able to get away from him." She turned to Liz with a triumphant smile.

"So, he agreed?" Melisca asked like she didn’t hear everything.

"Of course. But I need to report to him before 8:00 pm. We still had time." She returned her phone to her pockets and put an arm around Liz’s elbow. Clinging to her.

Melisca did not mind it anymore. She started to get used to Lorna’s clinginess.

"It would be my treat."

Her head snapped back to Lorna. "Your treat? Really? You know I have a big appetite."

Lorna laughed. "I know. As if I haven’t seen you eat."

She snorted at that. "Fine. At least I can save some money."

"Free meals couldn’t satisfy you."

That made her laugh. "Maybe not."

"I’m sure of it." Lorna said with certainty.

She tried to walk slowly with Lorna clinging to her arm. She had natural long strides because of their height difference, with her having longer legs than the girl. A hand in her pocket.

They were almost at the cafeteria. Some people were making their exit to the other door ahead. As they entered, she did not expect to see many people all around the place. And the cold ventilation was seeping through her leather jacket. Lorna started to shiver close beside her.

"Why is this place even colder than before?" Lorna complained. "Maybe I had to talk to the maintenance to lower the AC a bit. It was freezing. Geez!"

"Aren’t you just sensitive to the cold?" Melisca can see that people weren’t bothered by it. And Lorna was wearing a denim jacket.

"A bit." There was hesitance in her tone. "I am." She finally admitted.

"Are you sure that the maintenance would follow your instruction for lowering down the temperature?" She asked. The girl was starting to grinned her teeth.

"Yes. He’s a friend of my father. He knew me." Lorna’s voice was starting to shake, but the girl was trying hard not to stutter.

"Then go. I’ll fall in line for the food first. And I’ll wave a hand for you if I’m already at a table." She urged her, and Lorna nodded, not trying to talk anymore, and went to wherever she had to find the maintenance.

It wasn’t that cold for her, though.

There were many people, but there are still plenty of vacant tables. She had nothing to worry about, and she went to the food counter. It really looked like a school cafeteria. There was a loud buzzing of murmurs around. Some groups were still in their uniforms in black and blue, and there were a few in green. There were people of all ages too.

She just went straight ahead without looking around anymore, but she could sense a lot of eyes were following her. And gossip was rising. Along with the lines of ’Who’s that girl?’, ’I heard that’s the new recruit.’ ’Pretty face won’t survive here.’ ’That face would be scarred on the field.’ ’I’ll make a scar on that face so she won’t be that pretty anymore.’

That last line, made Melisca turn her head to the girl’s direction. It was a few meters away from where she was heading. She followed the sound of her voice. She was with a group. Then there, their eyes met. That made the girl flinch with her death glare even from a distance. The girl’s eyes widen in shock, and the other in her table looked at Melisca too.

"Did she hear us?" One of the girls in the group mumbled to the other.

"Nonsense. We’re too far away from where she was." Answered by another girl.

Her glare change into a smile and she continue to focus on her way. It wasn’t such a good thing to respond to anyone’s gossip. She was not there to get involve in unnecessary things. But it seems like she can’t always avoid them.

’Did you see her smile? I’m in love.’, ’But I think she already had a boyfriend.’, ’Of course, that pretty face, it would be impossible if she doesn’t have one.’

Murmurs from the boys. She bit her lower lip to restrain the smile that wanted to show up again. It might be a good thing then that they thought she had one.

Ezekiel. Her mind suddenly mentioned that name. She wanted to laugh out loud from her ridiculous thought.

She grabbed a food tray that was piled at the side and fall in line. There were only few people before her. Some guys tried to talk to her and even volunteered their spot, that had some of the girls sneering at her. She grabbed that opportunity of course. Why would she refuse? They humbly gave it to her.

In just a few minutes, it was her turn, then Lorna tapped her shoulder. She already sensed that she was coming because of another round of gossips that were buzzing from different tables. Murmurs from that the spoiled princess was back. And most of the people appeared shock when Lorna talked to her.

"Sorry, it took a while."

"It’s fine. What’s do you want to eat?"

Lorna glanced at her tray. It was about to run out of space for any food plate. "Let me get my own tray. Wait." She hurriedly ran off to tray stuck near the end of the line.

When she came back, she ordered hurriedly and they moved to the cashier area. Lorna gave her credit card.

They decided to take the table nearest to the wall since it was also vacant and the surrounding tables were empty as well. They did not mind the mumblings from the people as they walked across the hall and passed each group.

Lorna held her head high and smiled at some of the people that called her name.

"I see you’re quite famous." Melisca mumbled as they put the tray and finally settled on their seats.

"Nah. And you’ve become one too. You’re only here in just a few hours." Lorna said and started to pick up her food.

Melisca began to dig in also. "Tell me more about this place."

Lorna swallowed what’s on her mouth first before she started to talking. "From what Carmen said earlier, you could die during the training."

"Trainees can kill other trainees?"

"Not exactly. Though there were rare cases of that, but you are not allowed to kill one another. However, what you are against with can kill you." She plopped another piece of meat to her mouth.

"And what is that?" Melisca somehow had an idea of what Lorna was talking about. But it was a bit outrageous to actually had one in the camp.

"A supernatural being." Carmen filled in for Lorna as she put down her own tray of food on the table. She was grinning at them.
