Chapter 69: Chapter 68
Chapter 68
"You’re blocking the door." Said the girl who didn’t even look at her and just continued walking inside.
Lorna helped her and tried to lift the bag back on her arm but she beat her to it. Not wanting to let the girl know its full weight.
"Are you alright?" Lorna asked with wide eyes.
She smiled at the girl’s concern. "Yeah." She tucked some loose strands of hair and they finally entered the room. She had just let her senses down and that’s what happened.
"That wasn’t nice. I hate her already." Lorna hissed and glared at the girl who was rummaging for something in the wardrobe.
Her fists clenched, she wanted to drag the girl by the throat to hear the cracking sound of death. But she had to behave properly. Not to cause any trouble for she just arrived there and she would never let her unstable temper get the best of her. Patience, Melisca. You just got in.
She followed Lorna since she had the keys and she did not fully see the other details that were on the card, only her dorm number.
The other occupants in the room were leering at them shamelessly. Melisca roamed her eyes around again. There were twin beds close to the wall, four on the left and right. A nightstand beside each bed and a wardrobe and there was also a dressing spot that was covered by a curved curtain.
"Here. This is your bed. Closest to the bathroom." Lorna said and sat down on the bench at the end of the bed. All the bedsheets around were in ivory color also the furniture.
Okay. So, if it’s not white, it is ivory. She wanted to laugh at that thought but she held it in. It’s better than white again.
Lorna handed her the keys and she snatched them immediately to open her own wardrobe and finally put the bag down and opened it to get some cash. Everything was folded neatly. She did not expect the inspectors would make the effort to arrange her things inside.
"By the way, your towel and blanket would be delivered later maybe. There was also a room attendant here."
"Wow. Why the luxury?" She can’t help but comment on it. She decided to pull out the clothes from the bag and use the hangers on the hanging rack from the left side of the wardrobe. Her other pair of boots were also one of the things that added extra weight to her luggage. She placed them on the bottom shelf.
Lorna shrugged her shoulders. "Well, maybe everyone deserves a little luxury before dying."
That made her pause and turned her head to Lorna. She did not expect her to say such a thing about dying. A chuckle had escaped from her lips. That’s her favorite line from the girl so far. And Lorna stated it casually.
"What?" The girl asked, confused in her reaction.
"Nothing." She shook her head and resumed unpacking her things while her shoulders were still shaking lightly from laughing.
Melisca assumed that maybe no one else was friendly enough to come to her even for a greeting. Some girls had gone out already and only Lorna was with her. There were two others still in the bathroom though. As she noticed they went inside earlier when they walked to her bed.
She sensed someone opened the door but she did not even glance at it. She was almost finished in her clothes.
Lorna was scanning everything around and her eyes turned to the door.
"Hi!" There was a booming voice of a woman. "Hello there, newbie."
That made Melisca turn her head finally. She almost gave a glare from that loud tone. Almost. But she managed to change her expression into a cold look instead. She had just finished unpacking and was about to close her wardrobe.
Lorna just followed the woman’s movement as she was approaching their direction. She had a friendly aura and looked like Liz’s age.
"Hi, I’m Carmen." She was offering a handshake. "I thought there was only one newbie."
Carmen stood at the foot of the bed, in front of Lorna.
Lorna stood up and shook her hand politely. "I’m Lorna. And I’m not actually a newbie. Liz is." She introduced her friend to the woman.
"So, she’s the one who would be staying here?"
"Yes. It’s me." Melisca was the one to answer her.
"Wow." The woman stared blatantly. "You’re drop-dead gorgeous. I’m not exaggerating." She added and smiled with awe. "I’m Carmen, your dorm leader." She was offering a handshake and Melisca wasn’t rude enough to ignore it.
She was not surprised to have a dorm leader. There was one too in her former camp. And at least this one seemed a bit nice.
Another redhead and a pretty one too. Carmen had fair skin and was at the same height as Lorna. Her face had a little similarity to the dorm warden.
"Would you like to have dinner with me? So that I can explain some things to you here."
Melisca was about to answer but Lorna interjected in a shrilling tone. "I’m currently doing that honor for her." Carmen even flinched from her sudden interruption which made her eyes go wide. Lorna’s voice was as bright as her big smile. She even stepped between them. Blocking Carmen from her. "And we’ll be having dinner together." She announced that she was absolutely sure that she could join her. She can only imagine Lawrenz’s scolding on his daughter.
She glared behind Lorna. What was this girl doing?
"Oh." Carmen’s awkward tone. "Is that so? Then would you mind if I join with you two?"
And this Carmen was obviously persistent too.
"It would be an honor if I could be friends with the prettiest face I’ve seen in person." She was looking past Lorna, directly to Melicsa who was behind.
Lorna turned her face around and looked at her with pouting lips and creased eyebrows. She glanced at the girl. She can clearly read it on her face that she doesn’t want Carmen to join them.
"And I want to be friends with you too, Loriena. Can I call you Lori? I’ve never seen you here before. You said you’re not a newbie." Carmen added. Seemed like she wanted to win over Lorna too.
They heard the door of the bathroom open and two girls in their bathrobes looked at them.
"Hey, Carmen, what made you so late? We’ll be going to dinner first." One of them stated and went to their own areas.
"Or you can join us now and take your shower later." The other one said, opening a wardrobe.
"Girls, we have a new dorm mate." Carmen announced to them.
"Yeah. We know. And we’ll only recognize her if she can survive a week." They didn’t even bother looking in their direction again.
Carmen sighed. She may be the dorm leader but controlling their behavior was out of her hands.
"I’m sorry about that." She turned to Melisca and Lorna again. "We always had newbies but they either didn’t survive the training or just surrendered. Both had the same outcome though. Death."
Melisca started to get the hang of the surroundings. People here always say something about life. Seemed like death was just lurking around the corner in this underground facility.
"It’s fine. And you can have dinner with us." Melisca decided. Carmen might have some new information to share if she can befriend her. Lorna had been out of the mansion for months and her knowledge could be outdated. Just like from the blood sampling before joining the organization. That was a close call to her hidden identity.
Lorna snapped her head back to Liz. She can’t stop glaring at her. But Liz raised an eyebrow at her, silently daring to go against her decision of having Carmen join them.
Then Lorna faced Carmen again with a big smile on her face. "Sure. You can join us."
Melisca knew Lorna didn’t want to but she already agreed.
"That’s great!" Carmen exclaimed enthusiastically. "I’ll meet you there in the cafeteria. I’ll be taking a shower first." She was about to turn her back at them but she quickly did a reverse. "Uh, one more thing. No weapons are allowed outside the training ground and the dorm after 5:30 pm, in case you had one on you. You can’t bring them anywhere outside. Better keep it in the wardrobe."
They both nodded and Carmen moved to her own area which was at the first bed, nearest to the entrance.
Lorna immediately tugged her elbow and whispered accusingly at her. "Why did you agree? You don’t know her. I don’t know her." She emphasized herself.
"Exactly." Her short reply. "We can get to know each other." She whispered back. "And it’s not a certainty that you can join me in dinner, by the way. Your father would want you to join him." She opened her wardrobe again to tuck away her knives. Lorna was still protesting beside her.
"Maybe not. He often had a dinner meeting with his colleague upstairs."
"This might be an exception. You just came back."
"Whatever. I’ll make something up. It’s your first time here. I want you to experience it with me."
"I’ll be fine on my own." She closed her closet and started to walk away from her post.
"I know that." Then Lorna just suddenly stopped talking. Her bubbly air earlier vanished as worry on her face became visible.
Melisca looked back at her. She wasn’t that insensitive not to feel the girl’s change of energy. Yes, she would be fine on her own. But Lorna? As she just noticed from earlier encounters with other people and the look they threw at the girl. There was too much contempt or insecurity towards her from being able to do what she wanted without getting the death sentence. Lorna could be using her too. The girl understood that she doesn’t give any shit about her status because she already knew her from outside. But she didn’t mind it at all. As long as Lorna doesn’t hinder her plans.
Both got out of the dorm and went to the canteen. She decided to take a shower later after dinner. She was thankful though that she changed her outfit when they were shopping. She was back to her usual leather outfit, but now she had on black jeans rather than leather pants.
Her long braid strayed to her front side that reached below her chest. And she had no plan to cut her hair short. She loves having her long hair, though it was inconvenient at times, especially during battle. That’s why she puts them in a braid or a tight bun. And even though she cut them, they would grow in no time.
Lorna felt the vibration in her pockets and she fished her phone out. It was her father’s name on the screen.
