Chapter 67
"Are you all right, dear?" Portia asked, seeing her getting frustrated all of a sudden.
Damn it! I shouldn’t be looking forward to seeing him. She only saw and touched him once, but already made her lose focus at times. He was such a fucking distraction!
"Yes, I’m fine. Just hungry, maybe."
Then Portia glanced at the clock against the wall. "Oh, it was almost dinner time and my duty was up."
Melisca quickly snatched her backpack and followed the woman outside. Lorna stood up when they saw them.
"Loriena, I’m sure you already know what to help her with. Go to the room warden and get her dinner. She might be having a headache from hunger." The woman quickly stated and hurriedly got out of the room, leaving the two of them standing.
"Would you like me to help you carry that?" Lorna offered, remembering that Liz had been carrying the heavy bag ever since she met her. She didn’t know it was that heavy, she never heard her complain or grunt in its harsh weight.
"Nah. Don’t bother. It’s fine." Melisca brushed off the girl’s offer. She knew the girl’s muscles wouldn’t be able to carry the weight. She can even lift Lorna together with her bag without breaking a sweat.
They exited the office and Lorna led her to a corridor. Lorna pointed to her the canteen, restrooms, clinic, trainer’s office, the boy’s dorm room, and laundry room. How she wanted to get inside the canteen but she wanted to settle her things on a bed first. Then they went back to the lobby to get to the other corridor. There were the private quarters of the high-ups, dorms for girls further ahead, and another restroom and laundry room.
"Each dorm room was occupied by eight people. They were large enough and could cater to up to 10 people actually. And they have their own bathrooms inside." They stopped in front of a door that read, ’Dorm Warden’ above. Lorna knocked and a woman’s voice responded for them to get in.
Lorna opened the door and they stepped inside the office. A woman with bright ginger hair, tanned skin, a blue combat uniform, and some dirt on her face with a loose strand from her ponytail greeted them. She was sitting with a swivel chair but her feet were on the table in a combat boot. Her body was inclined backwards. A cold compressor was placed at the right side of her lips. She was groaning.
Then when she glanced at her guests, her eyebrows furrowed. She looked at them under her eyes, as her head was lying down at the headrest. "Are you lost, gorgeous?" She was directly staring at her, though she was behind Lorna. "Welcome back, Loriena. Not so glad to have you here, brat." The girl spat.
If only Lorna hadn’t laughed heartily at the woman’s comment, she would have thought that she was being blatantly rude and could sympathize with the girl’s manners. Melisca knew in herself that she had a despicable manner too. Especially to the people she doesn’t like.
"What happened to that Gea?" Lorna asked.
The woman put down her foot and placed the compressor at the side. The table was getting wet from the moisture of the ice in it. It was still smoking cold.
"Mike scored one on me." She was rummaging through a cabinet she opened and put a paper and keys on the table. "This is such bad timing that you got to see me in this condition. Come here, girl."
She gestured for Melisca to come forward. The woman stood up and tucked some stray strands to her ear. "I’m Gea, the warden of the girl’s dorms, and one of your trainers. Your card, please."
Gea did not offer a handshake but gave her the things she pulled out from the drawer. "I’m Melisca." She handed her card and the woman snatched it from her fingers.
"You can just call her Liz." Lorna added.
Gea glanced at Lorna and she sat down again to work something on the computer. After just a minute, she stood up and returned her gaze to the new face, handing back the card to her. "Liz, I know it is my job to escort you to your dorm and explain things. But I’m sure bratty here could volunteer for that."
"Sure. No problem." Lorna chirped with a grin.
"See? So, I’ll leave you to her. You can ask me next time if there were some things that Loriena missed. Just not now, okay?" Then she instantly plopped herself down on the chair, grunting in pain or exhaustion. "That’s all, you can go now." She dismissed them with a wave of her hand and lifted the cold compressor from the table.
Melisca turned to Lorna and the girl nodded at her. Both get out of the office.
"She didn’t tell me which room." She mumbled when they were outside the door.
"Let me see your key. There’s a card there. It tells you which room and bed. And that paper was the rules and regulations in the dorm. You should read it." Lorna sternly warned her with the look.
She almost rolled her eyes at that. Of course, she had learned her lesson. She glanced at the card before handing it to the girl and looked at the hallway beyond them. She scanned her eyes above the hanging signs of each door. Dorm 3 was the second to the last door. There was a great distance in each dorm. Walking the hallways alone could be so tiring and energy-draining.
"We’re really underground, right?" She asked, her voice echoing through the halls. She could see that there was a total of eight dorms from the hanging signages. The restroom was beside the warden’s office. At the end of the hall is the laundry room.
"Yes. These two rooms here are for the trainers." Lorna pointed the rooms across the warden’s door. Dorms 8 and 6. "And the rest are for the trainees."
"There were a lot of trainees?" Melisca could hear some light murmurs from the dorms that they were passing. Even with her extra hearing, she couldn’t understand what they were saying. Hmm. Are the walls soundproof? Or were just thick enough?
She recalled earlier the warden’s room. It had a thick wall when she glanced at the entrance’s sidings."Could be." Lorna slowed down in walking and her face turned serious as she looked at Liz by her side. "Listen, Liz, some even died even before they were deployed outside. Either you die from training or when you surrender." She stopped talking when people were coming out from the dorms.
Some stopped in their tracks upon seeing them. Their eyes glued in their direction. Lorna’s aura changed. "Hi." She smiled brightly at the girls.
"Loriena. You’re still alive, huh?" The giant girl with tanned skin, hard jaw and slanted eyes nodded to Lorna smugly. They were all wearing casual clothes. "Benefits of having a high-ranked parents." The girl said to others behind her.
She can be called a giant because she was towering over them for maybe a foot. Even with Melisca’s height of 5’8, Lorna was shorter than her by two inches though. She remembered Ezekiel’s figure, the girl and him were almost on the same level, but she was sure that that man was two inches taller than this woman. Of course, everything about him was engraved in her mind.
The giant girl’s crew behind her started talking badly about Lorna.
"So, what?" Lorna countered with her head held high and arms folded across her chest. "At least I’m alive. And I have a choice." She chuckled tauntingly and pulled Liz to get passed the girls. "But you, you need to keep fighting to stay alive." Lorna’s laugh made the woman’s face contort in anger.
"You won’t make it out alive this time!"
That loud tone echoed in the hall and made Melisca’s ear ring. She rubbed her temple from the sudden headache. She let Lorna drag her away from them but she gazed back to the group, glaring at the woman. She doesn’t want to involve herself in a girl’s drama or any chick flick in real life.
"I would because I’m my parents’ daughter." Lorna responded in a loud voice too. That also made her glare at the girl that was pulling her. And Lorna lifted her other hand, making a middle finger for the group to see.
That made Melisca chuckle silently and shake her head at the girl’s attitude. She fixed her backpack on her shoulder as they walked the remaining distance to her dorm.
She now fully understood why Lorna was hated by some people. And their jealousy was understandable. Loriena was truly being a spoiled brat.
"Where’s your room?" She asked.
"Beside my dad’s at the male’s dorm."
That made Melisca’s brows furrow in confusion. Lorna glanced at her and the girl snorted. "The trainer’s dorm wasn’t really a dorm. There were separate private rooms inside for each superior. And I occupy the one next to my dad’s."
She nodded. And at last, they stopped in front of her dorm. Lorna turned to her. "Scan your card here, Liz." The girl stood to the side to let her do the scanning. She saw earlier how Lorna used the card. "Only the occupants in the dorm can open it. And there were rooms too that you couldn’t enter. Those rooms were prohibited. Extremely dangerous for anyone."
That sounds like an invitation. What danger could that be?
The door slid open on its own. She stood still outside. A bit surprised that the color of the walls was ivory. Thank, God. It wasn’t white. She blew out a huge breath. That was the very first thing that she noticed. She was still roaming her eyes around the room, not minding the people who were looking at her with mouths slightly open.
Lorna saw someone coming in their direction and was about to enter but her friend was still glued on the spot. "Uh, Liz?" She tapped her shoulder to get her attention. But that someone was already stepping up to them.
Melisca felt a slight force that bumped her to the side. Her backpack which was slinging to her shoulder, almost fell to the tiled floor.
