Chapter 61: Chapter 60
Chapter 60
Argon lifted his head to look at his friend across him. His brows formed a single line. "You witnessed how he reacted earlier. His emotions were clouding his right judgement as a ruler."
Gandolf’s fists clinched from what he heard. "Don’t ever say that." His eyes met Argon’s judgmental gaze. "We know fucking well how much he waited for this. For her. And he knew it himself what he should do." He stood up and stretched his body. "He wants her not just because she’s his mate. She really piqued Zek’s interest. According to what he said. So, plainly speaking, the mate thing wasn’t the only reason that he was after her. And besides, do you really think you can do something about it? Even if it’s the two of us against him, the outcome won’t be on our favor." He sighed picked up the syringe case before strutting to the door.
The pack beta chuckled upon seeing Gandolf snatch the case off the sofa. Shaking his head, he commented. "See? He forgot about it when he was in rage for his mate."
Gandolf did not bother to reply about his taunting tone. "I’ll call someone to fix everything here, and you better start on your task. Our king is waiting." He paused and turned back to look at him again. "By the way, I’d like to hear more about this Melisca since you already met her. In another time." He proceeded on his way then and did not shut the dented door anymore. It would be replaced soon.
Ezekiel was sitting behind a working desk in his office. He leaned back to the swivel chair and touched his head at the headrest. Two unbothered piles of folders were laying in front of him. He should start on them already, but Melisca occupied his mind again. Not about his desire for her. It was from what she last said when she finally fled from them in the forest. Maybe she knew that there was really a traitor among his people. She was infiltrating the hunter’s organization discreetly and that would be the most effective way to destroy them.
But Melisca was putting her life on the line. And for what? For revenge? If he thought it right, her parents sacrificed their lives for her to live. But she was determined to avenge them. She was willing to throw the lives they saved just to be fair. And when he tried to tell her on it, she got furious and even willing to hurt herself just to get away from him.
With eyes shut, he exhaled loudly in frustration. And he opened them to stare at the ceiling. His distant relative told him that Melisca was shot by a needle when she faced the hunters. And she appeared to be fine in just a minute. The hunters’ syringe doesn’t really work on her, considering that she was shot by it before. But anytime anything could go wrong. She could be hurt, and he wasn’t there for her. He’d never want that to happen.
Another sigh, she doesn’t want him to intervene with her schemes. Since she was also against the hunters, they could work together. His heart suddenly pounded rapidly with a thought that came to his mind. He can offer her a deal. But firstly, he had to know everything from both sides. From Rullo who were saying that Cabril died because of the hunters, Melisca’s real identity, and about her claiming that werewolves killed her parents. He can only find out everything if she opened-up to him. But he had to make a way to discover things in his own too.
He had to talk to Melisca soon. But for now, he had to finish the company papers in front of him. Then, he would visit a witch with Gandolf. He can set aside Argon’s opinion on him for the mean time.
Melisca was done with shopping and everything. Even buying another set of double-edged knives. She was now having lunch with Lorna in her apartment.
"Please take a seat and relax. I’ll prepare this in the kitchen." Said Lorna, their take-out lunch in her hands. She nodded and the girl proceeded to prepare their food.
Melisca settled herself down in a sofa. She already knew no one was hiding anywhere as her senses did not pick up anything. She put down the shopping bags to the side and roamed her eyes again. Observing every nook and crook anything her eyes can see. There could be any cameras around and eavesdropping devices. But that’s alright. She had no one else to talk to in her new phone. Only Lorna had her number.
The place was all about light and bright. It’s too clean and almost everything is white. To the leather seats, tables and any other furniture were coated with white. Also, the walls and doors. She inclined her body to the sofa, clenched her eyes close and sighed. It’s blindingly clear all around, feeling like she’s in a hospital. She just hoped that the room Lorna would lend her had any other hue inside. Or else, she might as well just stay in a hotel or rent her own apartment, not minding the money anymore. She still had a lot though, but not having a stable job while spending her savings, it was a bit worrying.
She only relied on herself ever since her parents died. And in the first year of her being an orphan, she suffered enough like any other human being. Even after having her bounty job, the Vrona PD gave her the smallest preys to hunt. It was a year after that they gave her bigger wanted criminals. She can manage to buy the things she wanted, not just the basic needs to survive life.
Lorna’s light footsteps were loud and clear to her ears. She opened her eyes and pushed herself forward. She felt a little heavy from exhaustion. Lorna placed the tray of food on the small table before them. She moved her ass to the edge of the seat to easily reach for the food.
"Uh, what would you like for a drink? I only had soda and canned juice though."
"Soda, please."
"Okay. Let me get the drinks. Please help yourself first." Lorna enthusiastically said and almost skipping on her way back to the kitchen.
Her brows slightly furrowed from the girl’s mood, she shook her head and reached for the utensils and a plate. She was starving from all the morning actions. Of course. she had some light snacks at the mall but it wasn’t enough for her.
Lorna was humming from the kitchen and her voice got louder as the girl walked back to her. Placing two cans of sodas on the table and she sat at the single chair to her left. "Let’s dig in!" She expressed and they started eating.
Melisca consumed food to her heart’s content. Lorna looked strangely at her until she can’t take it and was curious what was on the girl’s mind. She raised an eyebrow at her. "What?" She asked while munching a desert. Never mind the, ’don’t speak when your mouth is full.’ It was a bit strange for her to have someone to eat with during meal time. So, she had forgotten that etiquette. Or she just doesn’t care since she was famished. She just can’t stop herself from eating.
Lorna contemplated to voice out her thoughts. She didn’t realize that she was staring at the woman openly. Aside from Liz’s delightful appetite, the feature of her face was like of a goddess, even her body figure. Anyone could have thought that she’s a celebrity. She could be famous just by her face.
"Ain’t it rude to stare at someone while eating?" Melisca commented. The girl’s dazed expression made her uncomfortable. She was slightly feeling full so she finally slowed down. There was only a little food left in front of them. So, she planned to eat everything then.
Lorna blinked when Melisca pointed out her obvious staring. "I’m sorry. It’s just." She glanced at the whole table. Every food pack they bought was emptied to her friend’s plate.
Melisca snorted as she reached for her soda. She got it. It wasn’t her first time that someone reacted like that when they saw her eat. "Don’t worry. This is normal to me. Besides, I was famished." Raising the can to her lips and swallowed the cold liquid.
"But we just had some snacks before coming here."
"Those were just snacks. Not a full meal." She remarked, pointing a fork with a tiny slice of beef in it and bringing it to her mouth. She’s almost done eating everything that was in front of them.
Lorna remembered the first time she met Liz at the diner. The woman almost ordered every meal in the menu, and there were no leftovers. She wondered, where did all the food go? Liz had a flat abdomen, it was noticeable in her outfit sometimes. "Won’t your stomach hurt by overeating?"
’Overeating’? Melisca paused for a second. Trying to remember if that ever occurred. But when did I overeat? Ever since before, it was normal for her. It was like her nature.
Then a memory popped into her mind when she was little. When her mom always prepares food like having a feast.
Melicia would sometimes complain about how tiring it was just to cook for two people, yet she felt like preparing for a family of 10 when it was just the three of them.
Her father once said that it was how they truly were. Their fast metabolism and energy from using their abilities require a lot of nutrients and that food was like their battery. It was actually more like her stomach would hurt from less food.
"Sometimes." It’s a lie, of course. She shrugged her shoulders and emptied all the contents of her soda. She grabbed a paper napkin at the edge of the table and wiped her mouth. Finally finished in everything. Her appetite fully satisfied.
"How do you do your diet then? It seemed like you didn’t even have an ounce of fat in your body." Lorna queried curiously, leaning closer to her. Her eyes were gleaming with expectation for an effective answer.
"Diet?" Melisca repeated. The question surprised her a bit. She seldom hear it from a girl because she haven’t had any girl friends, or never close to anyone before. Lorna was the first one that she had for many days, and tolerated being with her. But then, it never actually occurred to her that she needed to be conscious in her body weight or shape. "I do lots of exercises. That’s how I burn them even if I eat too much." It’s true. Training exercises and fighting for almost a decade. Her body was always in action. Though it was never for the sake of diet.
Lorna’s face contorted upon hearing the word ’exercise.’
Melisca noticed the girl’s reaction and can hear her groan on her mind even if Lorna didn’t voice it out. It was visible on her facial expression.
"Anyway, Liz, is that all your things?" Lorna glanced the backpack beside her.
Melisca spared a look on her things too. "Yeah. Why?"
"Because we’ll have to travel to another city. For starters, you’ll have to enter the training camp." Lorna stated with a thrilled smile on the lips and eyes glistened with excitement.
Training camp? What the fudge!
