Chapter 60: Chapter 59

Chapter 59

"And what would our people think about this? You are our king. They would expect you to do the right thing. And they chose you, knowing that you can survive without a luna because you don’t have to fully succumb to the wolf nature." Argon elaborated on what Zek was trying to set aside for the moment.

His fists clenched as his jaw ticked for the rising rage. He doesn’t want to think about it for the moment. He knew his duty. He knew what he had to do. But Melisca is his mate, or whoever she is. He was done with having different women when he was still at the Blood Court. Ever since he became king, he swore to only have his mate then and wait for her.

"Alpha, you said that she killed a wolf. You heard her, so that means you know what she was doing and you didn’t stop her." It wasn’t a question from Gandolf. It was a clear statement from what he understood. As expected of his pack general, he was very keen on details and wouldn’t let anything pass.

"She already started, and you were tolerating it." Argon rolled his eyes at Zek’s lack of action.

Ezekiel clenched his eyes closed and pursed his lips in a thin line. "She wasn’t what you actually think she is." He stood up and moved out of the lounge seats. He can’t sit still anymore as they keep on judging her. Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves as he paced in front of them. "That!" He pointed to the case on the sofa. The syringes were kept inside. "That wouldn’t have been brought to me if the vampire was dead." A hand was on his waist, and the other was rumpling his hair. "Melisca saved the vampire by killing those hunters."

Argon and Gandolf chose to shut their mouths as they knew it best when Ezekiel was losing patience. And they were the ones who triggered it.

"She saved a supernatural." He pointed down. "It may not be us, but it was something! It was the other part of me." He ran a hand through his hair again and took a huge breath. He wanted to control his rising temper.

"But you are risking our race just for her." Argon couldn’t shut up anymore and stood up. He can’t stand letting his friend be controlled by emotions. "She doesn’t even want you. She fled away—" He didn’t get to finish his words because Zek held him by the throat and tossed him like a ragdoll across the room to the hard concrete. The brick wall cracked from the force before he landed on the floor with a painful groan.

Gandolf didn’t move from his seat. He knew his friend would survive, and Zek wouldn’t kill him anyway. He poured himself another drink and let the two on their own. He would only interfere when it was serious enough. He knew the indications if it ever came to that.

Argon felt his body had broken some bones, and he spat out blood to the floor. He felt a little winded, head in a daze. He was on all fours. But he did not stay long on the ground.

Zek dashed in front of his beta and held him by the throat again, lifting Argon in mid-air and cornering him to the cracked wall.

Their eyes turned yellow as the power of wolves enveloped their human form.

Argon held Zek’s hands in his throat. His face is turning red as he can’t breathe properly. "Like.." He won’t back down to his resolve. "Death.." His face contorted in pain, though he was trying to loosen Zek’s grip with his own strength. "Was after her." He finally completed what he was about to say earlier.

"Shut up!" Ezekiel roared and threw him to the metal door of the room. It dented from Argon’s hard impact. Cracking bones can be heard loudly. His grunts of pain were nothing compared to the echoes of the banging of fallen objects.

But Argon pulled himself up instantly and leapt to his alpha. Zek did not avoid his attack and waited for him head-on. Argon’s strength was a little on par with Ezekiel’s. He wouldn’t be his beta if he wasn’t able to hold his own against him.

Argon and Gandolf were the only ones among the wolves who had the slightest chance to go head-on with Ezekiel. But the two had to combine forces. That’s why he assigned them as his beta and gamma. Together, the three of them protect the remaining wolves in the present.

The two brawled around the room, throwing punches and kicks here and there. Things got damaged and broken, and some words were spat out. Gandolf only watch out for the bottle on the table, his glass, and the box on the sofa. Among the three of them, he’s the most level-headed one. He was too calm for a pureblood wolf when their nature had an impatient temper. That’s why Ezekiel made him the wolves’ general, for he wasn’t impulsive and would carry out a plan patiently. Other wolves can learn from his being tactical and mindful before attacking.

"Where is she, huh? You couldn’t even bring her home." Argon taunted, pushing Zek to the wall, but his alpha managed to change his stance and braced for the impact. He kicked the wall instead.

Ezekiel took off his ring as he sprinted back to his beta. Dragging him by the throat. His eyes turned orange lava as red and yellow collided in his pupils. His fangs wanted to slide down, but he gritted his teeth. "She had a mind on his own, Argon." The guttural sound in his voice was laced with venom. He doesn’t even have to say threatening words. His tone alone was enough that he would kill if anyone dared to oppose him by another word. Just another foot to his line of fire.

That was Gandolf’s cue as he used his speed and held Zek’s arm, but not looking directly into his eyes. "Alpha." He bowed his head in surrender.

"You don’t know how I wanted her not just because of us being mates. Her courage and resolve were unlike any other women." His dominance was so immense that the two wolves were suffering under his aura. The cold air of the room turned burning hot as Zek’s rage somewhat resonated in the entire place. "I may be king of wolves. But I know how to respect her will. I’m not going to possess her just to hate me in return."

Argon fought to meet his gaze even if his lungs were about to explode and was feeling dizzy for the lack of air.

Gandolf gritted his chattering teeth as he hissed to his friend. He stared at him by the side of his eyes. "Argon." His look was of warning and pleading at the same time. They were not in control of the situation anymore. In Argon’s state, it was like Ezekiel was holding his neck from falling off the boiling lava. Waiting for his body to be devoured by the hungry flames.

Argon finally lowered his gaze, submitting to his king.

Zek opened his mouth to make things clear and absolute. "Melisca or whatever her name is, she would remain as my mate. Nothing would change that. The same as I am your king, so do as I say and nothing more." He let go of him by tossing his body to Gandolf. The two stumbled to the side but Gandolf held his footing.

The beta was able to relieve his lungs from the unbearable constriction at last. He was panting for more air. The general held Argon by his safe shoulder, the other one was dislocated from the rumble.

Zek turned around and walked to the door in quiet footsteps. "Start on what I told you to do and confirm it. I’ll work with those company papers. Gandolf, order all the deployed warriors to be wary of every human and not to trust anyone." He exited the room then and went upstairs to his work office.

Gandolf and Argon blew a huge breath through their lips in unison when their king was out the door. They suddenly feel the instant change of the atmosphere inside the closed room. It was like an invisible hand was gripping their throats, then suddenly let go of them. Well, in Argon’s case, he had Zek’s hand to his neck for real.

Argon was unconsciously caressing his injured neck. If only he wasn’t supernatural, he would have died already. Gandolf threw his friend an angry stare and pushed him away.

"What?" Argon reacted to his hostility, stretching his aching muscles. His bones were in the healing process. "Hey, help me fix my arm." He called to his friend who was now approaching the lounge seats.

Gandolf turned around and waited for Argon to stop in front of him. He held his arm and adjusted it to the right place. Argon winced and grunted.

"Thanks." The beta mumbled and plopped himself on the sofa first. He leaned back and rested his head, sighing as he thought of what just occurred earlier. It had been a long time since they fought like that outside of casual sparring for training exercises.

"He found his mate, Argon." Started Gandolf. He sighed and moved his butt to the edge of the seat. They were now sitting across from each other.

Argon grunted and closed his eyes. "I know." His thoughts stumbled back to some memory where he was the first one to meet Melisca.

"He found her at last." The pack general still can’t believe what occurred to his alpha, who had been waiting for centuries.

"Yeah. Damn well, he did." Melisca was kind of different when he first met her. Strong and brave. She worked for the authorities. And she felt human. Just like their prey. "The history repeated itself." He thought that maybe she just had something with her that she could conceal her being a pureblood wolf. That’s why he didn’t mind it at all when his alpha claimed that she was his mate. But it turned out that she was a nondescript after all.

"No. We know Ezekiel, Argon." Gandolf disagreed. "Besides, we don’t really know all the exact events of the Grim War." The history they were referring to was called The Grim War by the supernatural world.
