The Runaway Huntress -
Chapter 59 - 58
Chapter 59: Chapter 58
Chapter 58
Argon and Gandolf eyed each other as they noticed the strange behavior of their king. He wasn’t listening to their curious inquiries anymore.
"Zek!" Argon called again, which made Ezekiel snap out of his own world. "I need more clues to find her easier. Her age, appearance, anything else that can help."
"I don’t know. I just got her name." He answered finally and moved to get another drink.
"Didn’t Rullo show you any picture of her?" Gandolf’s doubtful question. Rullo wanted Zek’s help but just gave him a name? A picture could help a lot also.
Ezekiel shook his head. The conversation was going nowhere.
"You did not tell us yet Cabril’s cause of death." Argon pointed out again after he swallowed his own drink and reached for the bottle.
"I’m not sure either." Shaking his head again, getting frustrated as he doesn’t know anything anymore.
"What? Rullo didn’t tell you about it also?" Irritation in Gandolf’s voice can be heard.
"He did say that hunters killed him. But someone claimed a werewolf did. Everything’s confusing." He swallowed down another drink. "I don’t know how things happened." He put the glass back on the table with a thud. Remembering Melisca was hellbent on revenge for her father being killed by the wolves. She did not spill their name, clearly wanting to take them on her own. If he knew, it could enlighten some of the vagueness in his mind.
"Did you not compel him to speak the truth?" Argon asked. He knew what he was capable of course. And no one can lie under compulsion.
"You know I would never miss the chance of knowing the truth, Argon. But in Rullo’s case, it was what he believed was the truth. So, it wasn’t a lie from him. I was about to interrogate the person that told him about his son’s death, but that someone was dead already."
Argon and Gandolf’s shoulders fell in dismay.
He didn’t know what would be their reaction if he told them the entirety of the situation. He was about to find out.
"Not only that. I found out Cabril was exiled by Rullo for having a human mate."
Argon was currently pouring a drink to his glass, liquid spilled to the side as his hold of the bottle slid. While Gandolf’s glass was in midair when he was about to drink. Both stilled from what they heard.
"What the heck, alpha. That’s another thing." Gandolf said after gulping the content of his glass quickly and serve himself another round.
"A human mate." Argon repeated, processing the information on his head, and assemble the pieces together. "So, this Calicia Wymers." His eyes widened. "She’s a hybrid?!" He exclaimed, thrilled with the information. "How was it possible? No supernatural can procreate with humans. They won’t survive the process also."
"This is the second time in history. There was one before centuries ago. A hybrid human and wolf." Gandolf stated some details but was surprised from it happening again.
"Correction." Argon showed his index finger to emphasize his point. "That hybrid wasn’t born naturally but was experimented by the witches. They forced a mating bond between a human and wolf. Of course, the human consented it in exchange of wishing to gain immortality. That’s why we shouldn’t trust those delusional fools." He turned to Ezekiel, giving him a sharp look that he was going to one of them.
Gandolf sighed. "You’re right. And that hybrid caused a massive massacre that led to a war. And now, we are an endangered race."
"What was he thinking hiding such important situation from us?!" Argon exclaimed. Clenching his fist in anger. "He should be punished for this, alpha. And I would definitely find this hybrid before she goes rampant and might repeat the history of killing us." He can never forget his ancestors was killed by the first hybrid human and wolf. And now, another one was created.
Ezekiel already predicted it. This was also the reason why he was considering not to tell them because the history could be brought up. It is inevitable anyway. And though Melisca had a mind on her own, unlike the first one, she was still out to finish them. Different reasons but the same actions could only lead to one conclusion. Disaster.
Sighing, he drank another glass of blood. It was already mixed with alcohol. A vampire drink that was concocted for them.
"We have to kill that hybrid then." Gandolf concluded.
"No." He growled in abrupt counter, placing the glass on the table with a loud thud.
"No? What do you mean, no?" Argon argued. "Alpha, we can’t let the history repeat itself. She was an abomination."
"She’s different, Argon. She was born naturally from a mate bond. It was fate from the Moon goddess."
"How unfortunate for Cabril." Gandolf commented, tapped Argon to pour a drink to his glass since he was already raising the bottle to his own glass.
"Don’t say that. He didn’t get to choose what was meant for him." He stated.
My mate wouldn’t have been born if were not for them. He inwardly thanked them for giving a life to his mate.
"She was considered an abomination, alpha. You were both hybrids, but you have proven yourself with the supernatural. You have a different story. You lead and most of all, protect us." Argon stated in a matter of fact.
"If she can prove herself that she’s not the same as the first one, would you spare her?" Zek countered. Even knowing that his friends were right that she was going to kill them. They didn’t know that she already started.
Gandolf’s brows furrowed as he noticed something. "Why does it feel like you are siding with her, alpha? It’s as if you are giving this abomination a chance."
"Yes. It seemed like you wanted to protect her." Argon seconded, giving Ezekiel a glare of disdain that he didn’t like that he was defending her somehow.
"Exactly." Gandolf raised the glass to his lips to take a sip. He can’t believe his friend was thinking about siding with the dangerous hybrid.
"Of course, because she’s my mate!" Ezekiel growled in admission.
That made Gandolf choked and spat out some of the liquid he was about to swallow. He made a choking noise. Argon instantly tapped his back to help him calm down from coughing.
There’s no water in the table so Argon gave him his drink. It doesn’t make any difference if he swallowed any liquid.
"Are you alright?" The beta asked when the general stopped from making any noise and continued to drink.
"Yeah." Gandolf mumbled, voice still hoarse from his aching throat. "The fuck, Zek." His attention back to the topic and glared at his alpha across him.
"Wait." Argon interjected. "Isn’t Melisca your mate?" He was now very confused. Zek even ordered him before to chase after Melisca. And now he was claiming this Calicia Wymers as his mate. Gandolf turned to look at him with brows forming a single line. They did not inform their pack general about finding their alpha’s mate.
"Would you mind enlightening me about this mate information?" Gandolf glared at Argon for not sharing the news and turned to Ezekiel. "This isn’t just for personal matter. But it’s also about our future luna, alpha."
Ezekiel leaned forward, propping both elbows on his knees. He heaved a deep breath and thought for a second where to start. "We coincidentally met my mate at the police station and she fled away from me. Argon can tell you more about it later. So then, when I visited Falden City to do my investigation about the hunters, I met her one night."
"What?!" Argon was surprised that the two met again already. "I thought you haven’t had the chance of finding her yet because she isn’t here. You said you would bring her home."
Zek grunted. "If only that’s easy. But things were never the way it should be." He palmed his face and exhaled loudly in weariness of the situation. Sighing again as he reached for another round of his red liquid. "Anyway, I heard her saying to the wolf that they killed her father and she was out for revenge. Adding to that, it was the wolf I wanted to interrogate for he was also the one who said to Rullo that Cabril died from the hands of the hunters. And he said that the daughter’s name was Calicia Wymers."
No one uttered anything after he said all that. They remain silent. Their minds were blown away by the shared information at last. But everything sounds complicated.
"Did Melisca said any specific name about who her parents are?" Gandolf was the first one to open his mouth.
Zek thought for a moment, rummaging his mind. Then slowly raised his eyes to them and shook his head. He had just realized that she never mentioned it and just made the assumptions. But all the things lead to her being a hybrid and Cabril had a human mate. Could there be another hybrid and the two were completely different person? But no matter what, it doesn’t change the fact that his people were in danger from the hunters and Melisca.
"Are you entirely sure this Melisca was a hybrid?" Gandolf doubted again.
"Absolutely. We talked once."
"What? You two even had a conversation?" His beta kept interrupting him with his bewilderment.
"Did you ask her if she’s Calicia?" Gandolf waved off Argon’s insignificant reaction. He wanted to make sure of everything. He had to, being a pack general, he needed accurate information.
"Yes. And she said no." He drowned the drink to his throat. The spicy flavor of the alcohol mixed with a sweet tang of blood blended in his mouth together.
"What if she was lying?" Argon doubted. "There were no records of her. But let me go through that again when we are done in here." His mind was already working of where would he start by digging her identity. Hands were itching to start tapping the computer to his own office.
"No. She did not hesitate to answer and she appeared to be telling the truth. You think I wouldn’t know if someone was lying?" He countered their doubt at her and to his intuition.
"But Rullo said her name was Calicia, not Melisca." Gandolf eyed Argon who turned to him as well. Both shared a look of confusion on their faces. "This whole thing was messed up." He said in conclusion. Hands in a surrendering gesture, didn’t know what to say anymore.
"Whether they are the same or not, your mate is a hybrid, alpha." Argon pointed out. He eyed him with a look that he already had an idea of what he was about to say. He knew where this was going. "Other races might go after her if they discovered that a new one existed."
"Wrong." Gandolf intervened. "They would definitely go after her. Not just a possibility." That was a clear statement.
