Chapter 58: Chapter 57

Chapter 57

Ezekiel raised his head from deep thought. Looking at the two people he trusted the most. They were discussing the possibilities and ways the hunters were able to do what they do now.

"Alpha, I hate to say this, but what if there’s a traitor among our people?" Gandolf voiced out what was on his mind. Argon nodded, and both were waiting for his reaction. He loathed that possibility.

Don’t trust anyone.’ Her voice, which was laced with contempt, kept playing on repeat. Was that a warning? Did she know that there was a traitor in my people? She sounded absolutely sure or convincing enough.

"I hope not." He mumbled. His mind went numb to such a possibility. Shaking his head, he went to the sofa and plopped himself down. He placed the case close beside him.

"What would you do to that?" Argon sauntered in his direction.

While staring at nothing, his mind was in a daze, but his lips moved in automatic. "I’ll bring this to the witches to make something that can counter it. An Antidote."

Argon and Gandolf eyed one another.

"Do you think they’ll help us?" Gandolf asked, going to the minibar that was in the room and taking a bottle of cold red drink for Zek, along with a brandy glass. "I think you need this." He placed them on top of the small table in between them and poured him a glass. The red liquid was bubbling with smoking coldness.

Both the pureblooded wolves in the room were used to having seen Ezekiel drink his absolute favorite. The tang of rusty smell doesn’t bother them anymore.

Zek reached for the glass and gulped everything down at once. "I have someone I trust among them." He answered.

"I’m going with you." Argon offered.

"You don’t have to protect me. I don’t need a chaperone."

"You’re the Lycan king. What if something happened to you? Who would rule us then? You don’t have any heirs yet." Gandolf stated with annoyance and worry at the same time.

Argon sighed and agreed with the pack general. "Gandolf was right. You’ve been putting yourself in a lot of danger recently. Drasco told us that you kept roaming alone. We know you are concerned for our people, Zek. But in case you have forgotten, you have us. And our top priority was the safety of our king."

"And our best friend also. But knowing you, duty comes first. And you happen to be the most significant person in our endangered race." Gandolf added.

Zek rubbed a hand to his temple. They have a point, though. No matter how powerful he is, if he was too reckless, then his life would be on the line. He had to protect his people. And he couldn’t do that if he were dead.

He heaved a deep breath and came to a decision. "Gandolf, you’d be coming with me. Argon, you lead the pack while I’m away. And work with the company papers." He gave him a sharp look.

Argon hated working with the papers. But he learned in able to help Ezekiel more with the business.

"Speaking of that, there is a pile of documents that you had to sign. I separated the urgent and the lesser ones on your table at the office above." Argon stated.

"Why didn’t you study and sign them?" His brows furrowed in irritation.

"I was about to do it today. But there were very big ones that I couldn’t decide on my own, so I waited for you to do it." He reasoned.

"Uh, the secretary keeps calling in the telephone and his number." Gandolf added. "I told him a couple of times to do it and finish them already."

Argon’s head snapped to the guy beside him. "There were big projects and decisions that I can’t do, okay?" Defending himself.

"You should have told me. Maybe I can help." Gandolf did not back down.

"You were busy enough with the mission and the pack’s safety."

"I could spare some time."

Argon was about to retort back, but their alpha put an end to it.

"Enough!" Zek’s voice boomed inside the room, which made the two flinched on their seats and shut up. A moment of silence before he opened his mouth again. "I’ll see to those papers first before going to the witch. And Argon, I need you to investigate something. Hand me a pen and paper, please." He demanded politely.

Argon stood up to fetch the things he ordered.

"Gandolf, hunters were very rampant in Falden City. But deploying our men was a lot more dangerous. They can’t go against their syringe. We don’t know what humans are capable of now." He doesn’t want to show off his frustration, but he can’t totally hide it from the alarming state.

"What if we ask for help from the other races? They were aiming at them too. They had to be aware, especially the Blood Court, as a vampire was targeted." Gandolf suggested.

Ezekiel shook his head. "Those other races were far from here. They live in another country or in their own village and towns. We are the main target of the hunters, for aside from our endangered number, we go out of our home and work with humans." He knew he should do it, but he was being selfish in the meantime. Melisca was joining the hunters. She was out there. What if another race were to know her existence? He didn’t know what action they would take.

"So, what do you suggest we do, alpha?" Argon said as he returned to them and put the pen and paper on the table.

Zek grabbed the items and wrote down a name.

-Calicia Wymers-

He gave it to his beta, and Argon read the paper.

"Who is this, alpha?"

Ezekiel took a huge breath of air. He can trust these two people with his life. They were best friends.

"Can I take a look?" Gandolf was curious and reached for the paper.

Argon glanced to Zek for permission. His alpha nodded. He passed the paper to Gandolf then.

He ran a hand to his hair and exhaled in exasperation. "I’m not sure also. Rullo said that it was his granddaughter’s name."

Instantly the foreheads of his two companions wrinkled in confusion.

"She was missing." He started. The two were eagerly staring at him, waiting for more details. "Cabril died."

"What? That dude was nice." Gandolf’s exclaimed in disbelief. "He was once under my training team a long time ago. He was more capable than his brother."

"Yes. We spar sometimes. He was an honest fellow." Argon seconded. "Why didn’t we know about this?" Leaning forward to the table, attention fully to his alpha.

"Wait, wait." Argon moved to the edge of his seat too. "When did he die?"

Ezekiel calculated the years on his head but wasn’t entirely sure. "Many years ago." His vague answer.

"Seriously? Did you keep this from us?" His general sounded annoyed by the hidden news.

"No. I was surprised as well. Rullo just told me when I came."

"Why didn’t he inform us? Or even just you? Cabril was supposed to inherit his position when he found his luna, right?" Argon glanced at Gandolf for confirmation. The other one nodded.

"He should be punished for keeping such information, alpha. It involves the position. You have the right to know." Gandolf stated the fact.

"But I can’t for now. A lot of things were going on. There were more important matters we needed to look into."

"But how did Cabril die actually?" A question from Argon that he doesn’t know the accurate answer.

Zek groaned and poured himself another glass of the red drink. The two were all ears at him. How would he explain it? From Rullo’s side, it was the hunters that killed him, and from Melisca, it was them.

"I think I need a drink for this." Argon pipped in. "If you don’t mind, alpha."

"Go get a bottle for you two." He gave him permission.

He walked towards the minibar and took out the things he needed. Alcohol that was made for them. That could make them drunk like humans do.

Gandolf was still in shock from the news. "So, this Calicia Wymers is Cabril’s daughter?"

"That’s what Rullo said her name was." He nodded his head, mind still in shambles over how to further explain things.

"And where was Cabril’s mate? The mother." Argon inquired as he put down two brandy glasses on the small table and popped the lid open of the strong Gin.

"Dead." Zek’s mere reply.

That made Argon pause for a second in what he was doing. Then he sat back down beside Gandolf. He reached for the glasses to pour the cold drink.

"Wow." Gandolf blinked and leant back to the sofa. "That’s tragic."

"And their daughter was missing." Argon commented. "How?"

"How old is the daughter, by the way? Maybe she had found her mate and he kidnapped her and brought her to his pack, or she ran away with him." Gandolf’s theory.

How I wish! Zek snorted at the thought. If only he could dare to. But he wouldn’t. She would hate him for it. Melisca doesn’t want to be controlled by her werewolf nature. She won’t give in to it. A different approach should be considered. Now that he’d thought of it. Maybe courting her like humans’ nature would do. He folded an arm against his chest and a finger rubbing his chin. Hmm. It could work. He was obliviously nodding his head about the plan he was cooking.
