Chapter 56

Melisca went straight to the grave of her parents at the back of the cabin and did what she was supposed to do. After that, she got inside the cabin to get some clothes. She had a few stored in there. It was somehow relieving that everything remained as it was. She still didn’t know who had welcomed themselves inside though.

There was no water in the bathroom. She had to fetch water first from the well situated a few meters away from the left side of the cabin.

She sighed as she saw her reflection in the mirror above the sink. Shaking her head, she can’t go back to civilization in her current appearance. There were some splashes of blood on her clothes, though they wouldn’t know it was blood, but she still stinks. The sweat and dirt made her skin sticky. Hair, a mess on her face, strands escaped from her tight braid. "The river would do." She mumbled and got out of there, spare clothes at hand.

The crystal water of the river was very inviting. Her senses did not pick up any unusual thing around so she removed her clothes and burned them on the ground. It was handy to always have a lighter in her pockets, from her smoking habit. She took a quick dip in the water and rubbed the dirt off her skin. She untangled the braid and let her hair flow freely by the water like a mermaid. She sighed in pleasure in dipping her whole body and swam around a bit.

She looked up at her wristwatch. "Damn." She mumbled and got out of the water. She would be late for her appointment for the day. Getting into the new clothes, they were a bit tight for she had grown on it. She was 18 years old back then, now she’s 27. Since she gained some muscles and has grown a bit taller. Maybe because of her wolf blood, she was still growing past the age of puberty.

Her outfit was a simple red V-neck shirt and a pair of denim shorts that reached inches above her knee. She squeezed some water off her hair and did not tie it anymore. She started on her sprint back to the road then.

She pondered to herself earlier to remember the route she took. But she still got confused and stopped here and there to see anything familiar. She should have left a clue so that she would just follow it on her way.

Then she stopped when her ears picked up a murmuring noise somewhere. It was meters away from where she halted. What was that? Her head tilted to where it came from. She sneakily headed towards it. There were different voices and a conversation. She decided to remain distant and stopped behind a tree.

"Whoever did this to them was a supernatural and a damn strong smart one." Spat by a male voice. His tone was laced with venom. She can only imagine his face could be contorting in anger.

She nodded at his words though. Of course, because he complimented her.

"But shouldn’t they be alarmed that there was a supernatural around them? We all carry a detector." A female voice.

"Right. They shouldn’t have been sneaked up to." Another girlish tone.

"They were fast, Minda." A gruff voice from a guy.

"But they could have sprayed the ABD."

"Maybe that monster was faster than their hands. Or they should have sprayed it around first for extra caution."

Melisca didn’t know who was talking anymore and how many people were there exactly. Their voices were drowned by her sudden deep thought. She was sure that the man with the phone among her victims earlier was not able to contact anyone. Or maybe he successfully did. She didn’t know anymore.

"Or maybe." A short pause from a raspy voice that sounded like an old man. "It was the hybrid."

There was a moment of silence. Melisca only heard multiple heartbeats that drummed loudly. Seemed like everyone held their breath upon hearing those while analyzing what it meant.

"What hybrid are you talking about?" A young voice of a girl chirped in.

"If that is, then it means, she’s undetectable." There was a hint of tremor in the man’s voice.

"She could still be around." A frantic tone a female exclaimed.

"Expose your ABDs." An authoritative tone from the man she first heard called out.

Melisca stayed still on her spot. Thinking she already freshened herself and was a bit tired for another bloodbath. And these hunters were more alert. With their so-called ABD, she would have to fight as a human. She can’t underestimate them if she had to take them on equally as mortal. Aside from that, she was totally outnumbered.

Backing out for now is the best option. They were small prey anyway. Her aim was the bigshots in the organization. Those who ordered them to go after her family.

She stepped out quietly and continued her way to the road. While walking to the mechanic shop, her mind was in a daze about the things she heard. They had a supernatural detector. How was that possible? The same as the syringe that was meant to kill various races. How did humans achieve those? How does it work? It seemed like a magical item. And she was still confused about how they were able to get there. Maybe they waited for their fellows somewhere nearby but they took so long so the other party decided to see what kept them.

Her mind was so bugged in a lot of things. She kicked a pebble out of frustration and stomped her foot to the rest of the walk until she stopped in front of the mechanic shop.

The men working outside looked up at her and gave her a nod. But their eyes lingered as she passed them. Her smooth long legs were on display and her damp hair hung loosely around her body. She was not wearing a mask also.

When she opened the door to the shop, the boss was arranging some tools at the corner. He turned around and his jaw immediately fell. She did not pay any attention to his reaction, she just sauntered to the counter. He followed her by gaze and after a few more moments of staring, he finally moved and approached her direction.

"What happened to you?" His first question was as he moved away some bolts and nuts at the top of the glass counter. "Are you secretly a model or something? You look like you were straight out of a photoshoot."

That made her hard face crack in a snort. "No. Thanks for this." She raised her hand to give the ply-bar directly. "I washed it already." She added.

"Oh, you don’t have to." He accepted it and put it behind him, hanging on the wall. "You could have just left this outside to the boys. Anyway, if only I’m not married, I would be shamelessly hitting on you even at this age." He laughed at what he said.

He was not that old. She bet he was in his 40s. But she likes him as a person that she can deal with without asking too many questions personally, and he often jokes. She was reminded of the Vrona PD when some officers his age would kid around in some topics. She was able to listen to them though she wasn’t in the conversation. But she can also hear the young ones that wanted to hit on her.

Melisca did not stay long and was on the road to the city at the top speed possible. And she indeed had to do some shopping for new clothes.

Ezekiel was back at Vrona in his own place. His beta Argon and gamma Gandolf, the pack general were with him in the basement of the Crimson pack. The pack which he personally supervised in Vrona.

The three of them were standing together in front of a high table. An open box of the syringe he brought back with him was on display. They all stared at it.

"Can I touch it, alpha?" General Gandolf asked.

"Yes, but use some gloves." Zek tossed the rubber gloves in his direction and he caught it in midair. "Just for extra caution. It’s deadly to us." He gave another pair to his beta.

"The vampire survived it, as you said." Argon repeated what Zek explained earlier to them when they entered the room.

Zek nodded. "She’s a pureblood. She drank human blood as soon as she was injected. She almost died. But human blood kept her alive."

Gandolf scrunched his face in disgust. "So, do we also need to drink blood to survive it?" While a vampire’s basic nutrient is blood, obviously, it wasn’t for the wolves. They prefer meat, a lot of meat.

"If that’s what it takes, why not?" Ezekiel stated, arms folded against his chest. His two friends and officers looked at him with skeptical expressions on their faces. It was favorable for him for being half and half. But human blood was poisonous to other beings.

He wanted to laugh at their reactions.

"You’re not fair." Gandolf grunted and reached for one of the injections. "The smell was close to none."

Argon picked one also and raised it to the light. To see the very content of the substance more clearly. "Whoa." He was in awe of how the colorless liquid was able to kill them. It looked like water, aside from the little bubbles of acid.

"Be careful not to prick yourselves with that. That would be a dumb way to die in your own recklessness." Zek reminded them. "Better put it back now." He admits that it was gnawing him that those needles could take the people he was closest to. He was even uncomfortable seeing them holding it.

The two complied and put them carefully in the case and closed the lid. Zek immediately took it out from the table. He was anxious by letting it lie around with anyone in the room. It is fatal to them.

"How did humans come upon it? And they were successful too." Argon voiced his concerns.

"And not only that, they also happened to know that there were supernatural in the area. It was just so uncanny." Gandolf added, thinking that one member of the squad he deployed died by the syringe. It was almost a week ago when Jethro’s team was having lunch at a diner. And to their surprise, hunters were waiting for them there.

Ezekiel remained silent from all their comments. His heartbeat was raised by the possibility of something. An act that he did not foresee. Melisca’s voice echoed in his mind, ’Don’t trust anyone.’
