The Runaway Huntress -
Chapter 56 - 55
Chapter 56: Chapter 55
Chapter 55
Melisca positioned her dagger to his neck, his skin barely touching the sharp blade. "Try pulling anything out. Your heart would be next." She warned, looking to his eyes that had bulged in shock. The syringe gun had fallen from his hand. He swallowed hard. She can even hear it.
His beating organ was too loud and too near for her. And his breath was shaking.
She moved her left hand to reach for his gun to the side holster and took it out. Tilting her head to the side of his neck, she can see the other guy far ahead. He was stealthily trying to get something from his pockets, but eyes were at her. He immediately raised both his arms in surrender. She pointed the gun at him, aiming to the pocket where his hands were going just seconds ago.
Bang!
"Argh!" The man instantly fell to the ground and shrieked in pain. Even though it was faint, her ear picked up the sound of a broken bottle. It was deaf to human hearing. The guy she had a knife on his throat with was flinched by the sudden shot and had slashed his own neck accidentally. He held his neck in both hands and took a step back from her. It was like hitting two birds in one shot.
His neck was bleeding, but it wasn’t fatal enough. He was trembling with fear as he looked at her.
"Seeing this pretty face won’t be that bad when you die." She mumbled and gave him a smile. "You should have waited for your turn. I was going to come to you anyway." He was indeed the driver that was waiting at the van outside the forest.
She doesn’t have to take a glance at the guy that she just shot. A thudding sound was loud and clear that he was gone. The rest of his body fell hard. She can’t hear his heartbeat anymore. But she just had to make sure of everything. She spared him a look. Dead indeed.
Turning back to the last man in front of her, suppressing the gushing blood from his neck. Tainting his hands red. "Hmm." Wondering where she should start. She lowered her knife to her sides and crushed the gun in her other hand. The handle cracked, making a crunching sound. There were tiny cuts to her palm from sharp pieces. She bit back her tongue to stifle a wince. It hurt a little. She crushed the whole weapon. Like the broken debris of a glass, the bits slipped from her hand, and she threw the rest to the ground.
The man just followed her movement. Eyes went wide in fright from what he witnessed. She showed her palm up that had several cuts to her fingers. The wounds were closing instantly. And like nothing happened, her skin doesn’t have any scars or scratches.
"Amazing, isn’t it?" She looked back up to the guy while clenching and unclenching her hands, stretching the tiny muscles. A smug smile was plastered on her face.
He was looking into her hands with both fear and awe. "Monster." He uttered in a hissing voice.
Her smile instantly vanished. Her face turned grim. "Humans killed my mother. Wolves murdered my father. What does that make me? Of course, a full-blooded killer." She took a step closer to him. "Now. Talk." Her voice was calm. He retreated another step. "Why not kill me? Wasn’t that what you were after ever since?" She played the dagger in her hands, twirling between fingers, and didn’t mind the tiny cuts the blade was causing. She loves the unmeasurable sharpness.
He wasn’t answering. He just remained looking at her, like trying to read what’s on her mind. She did not sense anyone else nearby. If he was taking his time for the backup to come, she would know a few meters away. But what if it was a sniper? Her thoughts were going through all the possibilities of any hidden attack on her. But then, their words for not killing her were somewhat promising.
"You wouldn’t talk? Fine." She heaved a deep breath of disappointment. "I don’t understand you hunters. Some of you wanted me dead, then the others, alive. What was it really? But I think you should stick to the former. Kill me or you all would be." In a blink, she appeared right before him and sliced the spot below his jaw. She leaped away before the blood could bathe her and landed a meter away. "Dead." She finished her sentence.
She kept him alive to talk, but since he wouldn’t, there was nothing else then. Her heart was still pumping in adrenaline. Her weapon was warm in her hand. She felt like it was vibrating, alive for her too. And it was hungry for more blood. She raised it up to her face. It felt almost magical. The overwhelming feeling, then it gradually turned cold. Not the freezing cold. Just, it lost its warmth.
The blood stains were gone like it had never been tainted or opened anyone’s skin and cut through bones. It looked untouched, innocent from all the killings. Maybe the blade coating was just made from something stain-proof, like any liquid won’t stick to it and would only sled or bounce off from the object.
Shaking her head to not think much about it anymore. She put it back to its scabbard and turned around. Roaming her eyes to the surroundings, it was bloody everywhere in the small clearing. Even to the side, there was a lifeless body that she released from the tree, lying around in a pool of blood from all the broken bones and cuts.
She groaned. She can’t just leave it like this. A civilian might stumble on this bodies and report it to the authorities. Then the hunter’s organization would be on high alert that someone was killing their people. They would suspect anybody. Especially her since she was a newcomer. "Oh, shit." Groaning in her stupidness again. Why she hadn’t thought of that earlier? She run a hand through her hair that had gone messier from all the action. Stray strands all over her face. "Ugh. Seriously." Sighing in frustration in a closed eye.
She shouldn’t keep going like this. It would be a lot harder for her to infiltrate the bottom of the organization if there were mysterious killings from time to time. Maybe she’d just have to lessen it a bit.
Looking at the lifeless bodies splayed in different spot, this would be a lot of work. She looked for any tools they used in digging the corpses earlier from yesterday. She found it at the side near the pile of soil.
She sauntered to the tool and picked it up to start digging for bigger hole that would fit all the bodies she’ll burry together.
Using speed and strength, it only took her a few minutes to dig deep. She’s just thankful that the sun wasn’t rising at her directly. The leaves and tree branches were protecting her from the pricking heat. But of course, she was already sweaty enough from all the exercises she did.
She leapt out of the hole and started throwing the bodies down. Her face scrunched when she picked up the head of the girl she decapitated and its body. She tossed them to the pit, on top of the other corpses. Looking around if there were other things she had to burry with them, the syringe guns caught her eye. She wanted to take one for herself to study it, but it’s a bad thing to take something from the enemy, particularly their special weapons. It could have a tracking device or anything that wasn’t good for her. So, in the end, even though she was tempted, she threw it to the hole also.
Taking the shovel again, she transferred back the mountain of dirt to where she dug. She was getting tired and decided to hurry up everything so it would be done at once.
She did not plan in going back to the mountain to burry anything aside from her album. But she ended up burying corpses anyway. Before she finished the final coating of the dirt, she stopped and stared at the soil, contemplating whether to include the tool she’s using. But then she would have to use her hands for the remaining process. Her shoulders fell from exhaustion. Instead, she planned to cover up the last pile and destroy the shovel so that there won’t be any fingerprint left on it. Even this small detail was a valuable discovery of who buried the bodies.
Working for authorities was quite a big help in everything for her. To make sure not to leave any evidence even the tiniest neglectable thing.
She jumped up on a tree to scan everything around the area. Except for the blood that splattered and pooled in some spot, all things looked normal. There was nothing she can do to the red stains on the ground. The stench of corpse was finally relieved from her nose. She can now breathe the fresh air of nature.
The air cooled her sweaty face and tensed body. The knife that she threw to the guy was now at one of the trees. She stuck it to the bark to get later and clean it up before sheathing back to her boots. She pulled it out from the tree and returned to where she left her ply-bar and chest.
She get her chest above the tree and jumped back down. She’ll sprint the rest of the way to the mountain.
