The Runaway Huntress -
Chapter 136 - 135
Chapter 136: Chapter 135
Chapter 135
Glasses were crushed from the transparent cabinets that housed the suits and helmets. The white marbled floor was leaking with stained blood from the fallen hunters.
She glanced at the metal door that was lying on the floor. It was the only available thing that could shield her out of there without getting shot. There were other gunshots out of the room; it was loud enough even with the still ongoing alarm. It echoed through walls and corners.
Carmen took a deep breath and focused the remaining magic energy she had to give her super strength. It doesn’t come naturally to her, unlike Melisca. In one yank, she grabbed the door handle and made it a barrier in front of her. It towered over her by more than a foot. And the weight of it was never a joke. Her jaw was set hard to maintain the flow of her magic in her arm that was keeping the door upright.
Another surge of hunters came in. She used her other free arm to shoot them.
Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!
Their bullets bounced off the door and made a dent in the surface. So, the rusty metal could hold out a bullet. It was worthy of a shield then. She hid behind it again as there was another firing. She couldn’t hold on to her strength forever. She had already used half of her magic teleporting the supernaturals to the other side. She had to make a way to lessen these hunters as much as possible.
She fired her own shot as well. One down, two, three. Then the last one standing threw something on the ground. And that something was rolling on her way. There was only one thing in her mind. Grenade. And smoke was coming out from it. There would be an explosion in the next seconds.
She pushed the door on its spot to somehow lessen the damage. But instead of what she expected as a loud explosion, only smoke puffed out. But she wouldn’t like to linger there anymore, for it could be just a trick.
There was a shadow of a hunter through the thick fog. She dived down and slid herself through the floor; with blood pooling around, it was simpler to glide into it. She reached for her knife and slashed the hunter’s thighs, and he fell on the ground.
Carmen was about to stand up, but she staggered on her knees. She felt her strength getting flushed out from her system. She waved the smoke out of her face. Her ears shifted into pointy ends, even normal teeth turned razor-sharp, like those of a predator, and her hair darkened. Her glamour was gone.
She leaned an elbow on the door opening. She can see that there were still a few hunters going inside the supernatural room, but they were quickly thrown back out. And she could hear groans and moans from the inside.
She attempted to stand up, but she could barely move. And she’d just realized. It was a smoke bomb after all, but it wasn’t the usual one. It was composed with ABD.
She groaned. That was why she felt all clammy and any trace of magic was drained from her. She had no magic left. "Damn you, mortals! You’re getting way, way too inventive for my liking." Her teeth gritted as she spat angrily. She took a deep breath, and her chest slightly constricted from inhaling too much ABD. There was nothing she could do since she had already bathed with the anti-magic smoke from the hunters.
She closed her eyes for a bit. She had no other way but to embrace her other side then. There was just too little strength left in her, but it had to do.
She heard a scream inside that made her eyes snap open. She braced herself to stand up, pushed on her knees, and made herself seen from the hunters. She picked up another gun from the fallen enemy and shot at the three remaining hunters with both weapons in her hands.
*********
Melisca had just broken the glass wall when she heard the first gunshot coming from outside the passage. She quickly stepped in front of the double door and pulled Nesa out of the open fire.
"Get behind me!" She exclaimed throughout the echoes of bullets that came from the hunters. Nesa hid behind her, but she couldn’t keep up with how fast Melisca was moving. There was nowhere to hide, and the hunters were approaching. She didn’t want to turn around, but she had to open the closed doors behind them or they would get cornered.
She noticed smoke bombs thrown out on the floor, rolling closer to them. She was confused for a second why they chose to use something like that instead of an actual grenade. But then it could be because they were trying to capture her alive at all costs instead of blowing her up.
"Open the doors, Melisca!" Nesa shouted behind her while ducking her head. "I’ll cover for you!"
Melisca wanted to take off the helmet, for she couldn’t breathe properly from the heat inside from all her moving, and she was panting, which was making moisture through the visor. Added to that, the sweat was stinging her eyes, but she had to remain ABD-free as long as possible.
She gave her gun to Nesa, and they switched places. Just by looking at it, she knew that this door was much more durable and harder to take down. She had to open it or break her bones trying. She punched the door in the middle, where the two double doors met. She wanted to create a small opening, even just a dent.
"Melisca, hurry!" Nesa’s voice rang out behind her. "We’re running out of bullets!"
Melisca tightened her jaw and in the last punch that would certainly give her an opening, her knuckle bone cracked. She gasped and winced from the pain.
"We’re out!" Nesa announced and a bullet caught her in the leg and made her stumble on one knee but she braced herself by placing a hand on the floor.
"Don’t throw my gun away!" Melisca was still struggling at the door. She inserted her fingers and pulled open the heavy metal to the opposite side, sliding them sideways. Since she didn’t see any hinges, she concluded that it was a sliding door along with all the others in the camp.
She finally managed to wedge a small opening. She turned around to help Nesa then and pushed her inside. Bullets grazed past Melisca’s suit that made cuts and slashes. Then another one managed to nearly hit her that broke the visor. She closed her eyes to not let any debris get in her vision. She instantly felt a refreshing cold that touched her face.
She followed Nesa inside. "Get to the other side!" Melisca commanded the woman as she position herself to the left side of the door. Together, they pushed the metal towards the middle so the hunters couldn’t get in immediately.
Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!
Bullets bounced off the door and they were thankful for it.
When they both closed the door, they sighed in relief. They slumped for a few seconds to catch their breaths. Melisca took off the helmet and let it fall on the white marbled floor.
Then they faced where they got themselves into.
It was another lab and they just realized that they weren’t alone. There were people in lab coats standing close to the walls. Their faces in horrified expressions and some were on the ground, embracing themselves, covering their heads.
Melisca and Nesa groaned as they sneaked glances at one another.
"Seems like we’re not the only ones trapped in here." She mumbled under her breath but Nesa heard her alright as the woman nodded.
