Chapter 137: Chapter 136
Chapter 136
Carmen’s breathing was coming out ragged from pushing herself to move here and there. She had gotten past the entrance of the supernatural room, and there were hunters firing at those closed doors. She knew that Melisca had gotten in, and Carmen bared herself as the center target.
"Oh, great." She cursed under her breath as she was surrounded by enemies. And Lorwey had closed the doors at the end.
She dived on the ground and scooted inside a cell to hide herself from unending firing. She had no magic. She couldn’t make a portal to get off her spot. She wiped the sweat that tickled her eyebrows, but then she was confused by the water that dripped in her elbow.
She looked at the room she was in. Broken shards clattered on the floor, and it was obvious that the water came out from the giant aquarium. It was where the mermaid had been kept.
She raised her guns close to herself, not wanting to dip them in the water, she would be weaponless then. Hunters were zooming in on her in the aisle. She didn’t want to wait for them to surround the door. So, she fired at the entrance since she could see who was coming. Three consecutive shots and the hunters were down. No one else was entering for a few seconds. The only hunters left were the ones facing the double doors earlier that now had turned to her direction.
Carmen knew that she would be out of bullets soon, and she didn’t want to risk being trapped again. She had no other extra senses, so she didn’t know if there was an upcoming batch of hunters.
There seem to be unending reinforcements.
She moved to the opening of the cell, braced for impact, and threw herself on the floor. Her left shoulder hurt from touching the hard marble, but it was necessary for her to slide across the surface. She used the water, and it helped her carry on the momentum of gliding.
It was unexpected for the hunters, and she fired at them as her body slid on the floor. And the bad luck she dreaded happened.
She was out of ammo. And another surge of hunters entered through the main door. She threw the guns away and planted her palms on the floor. She whirled her body around, stepping her foot to the wall, and she pushed herself up while snatching her knife out of her waist. Then she slashed at the man’s knees closest to her. It was a losing battle. Too many hunters with guns and other weapons.
Her exhaustion was catching up to her as well. She was moving slower since she lost her magic.
"She’s a monster. Shoot her with the needles." Someone shouted.
She moved out of the way and pulled one guy to be her shield for the poison, but the situation wasn’t really on her side. She got shot in her shoulder.
"You’ll pay for that." She hissed and slashed the guy’s throat that she was using as a meat shield. She threw his body away to his companion, which made them stumble when they caught their lifeless colleague.
Carmen winced from the pain, but she could endure it. It was only at her shoulder. She was closer to the entrance of the supernatural room and in combat range with the hunters. They were having a hard time making an aim for her somehow because she was battling with their members. Throwing kicks and punches at them. She didn’t think of dying. No. She wouldn’t die. At the very least, not today.
But someone got the better of her finally. She was kicked to the wall, and she groaned. It was her injured shoulder that received the impact. Her face contorted. "Motherfucker." She was slumped on the floor. Her breathing was hitching from the pain. She swallowed the lump in her throat. Every weapon was pointed at her. She bared her razor-sharp teeth, but another one was brave enough to step closer to her and attempted to kick her again.
She caught his feet, and out of rage, she pulled his ankle and brought his limb to her lips. She dug her teeth above the part where it wasn’t covered by his boots. Blood pooled into her mouth, and the man shrieked in pain. His teammates pulled him from her. She let go of him as a punch was coming her way, but it was too late to cover herself from it. His fist connected to her cheeks, which made her head snap to the side, almost throwing her to the wall again if only she weren’t already slumped on the ground.
But she wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. She faced them again and spit the blood she’d got from them on their boots. She wiped her mouth with her forearm from the blood that dripped to her chin. She sneered at their faces. She had never used her teeth to hurt someone before, but it was worth it for the first time.
She hocked a loogie at them again, wanting to extricate the taste of human blood in her mouth. It was awful, especially from the mortals she hated, the hunters.
"Don’t kill her. We had never caught a faerie before, but the opportunity presented itself." One of them announced.
Then, suddenly, everyone snapped around as a bright white light emerged from the door. It was so painstakingly bright that even she had to shield her eyes from it. The hunters scampered and shouted curses with confusion about what was happening. But whatever it was, everyone felt that it was approaching them because even with their closed eyelids, the brightness was getting through. They held their arms up to cover their faces.
The men lost their focus on her and Carmen felt the enemies around her retreat from the walking light.
"What’s happening?" The hunters at the far end near the double doors paused as well but they were sneaking glances only in their direction.
Carmen felt a warm and cooling sensation at the same time. She felt someone hovered over her. Whatever and whoever it was, she wouldn’t let any bastard lay a finger on her even if she was down. She couldn’t open her eyes from the blinding brightness but she felt something near from where her hand was propped on the marbled floor. She grazed her fingers at it. It was her knife. Luck didn’t leave her side yet.
She raised her arm and waved her hand that was clutching the knife. She wanted her personal space intruder to retreat from her. But a hand caught her arm.
"It’s okay. You can open your eyes."
She felt her heart could had jumped out from her chest. She never expected someone to come to her rescue. Much less him from all the possible candidates that could have come back. His touch alone was easing her injuries and scratches. Even with just hearing his smooth voice that seemed to cover the noise from the sirens and shouts of the crowd.
She opened her eyes slowly and she was surprised that the light wasn’t hurting her eyes even if he was hovering over her.
Carmen raised her head and met his golden eyes.
