Chapter 128

She run to her laptop, ignoring the damning headache. Her hands were shaking from the rush of adrenaline. She knelt on the floor and set the dagger with a thud. She instantly felt the coldness in her hand and a bit of ease that she’d released of something dark and strange. The hilt was like a magnet to her. The dagger doesn’t want her to let go of it. She didn’t know why, but it felt like it had its own magic. However, she had to proceed to the next step.

Any minute now, someone or everyone could be barging in the conference room. They could have already found out that the CCTV were actually compromised by an enemy.

Her hands were still shaking. "Fuck!" She cursed and snapped it around in a sharp jolt. It finally moved as she had wanted it to on the keyboard. Her life and everything depended on it. She knew this would be the last time that she’d be working with her current laptop. So, she wanted it to be worth its last usage. Her fingers flew in a blur of how fast she typed in the codes and coordinates to hack the entire system and network of the organization

Beads of sweat were falling down her brows and the side of her face, despite the aircon inside the room. Her intake of breath was everything she could hear along with the tap-tap-tapping sound of the pressed keys on the keyboard.

Her heartbeat was thrumming along with the sound of the laptop. She can feel her sweat sliding down her throat in anticipation. She was almost there. Her breathing was coming in quick along with the time that was running out. Then in her last click, the lights went out. The room turned dark. She did it.

No time to breathe for a minute. Melisca smashed the laptop with the side of her fists. It broke her heart to ruin it, but it was what had to be done. She couldn’t just leave it still functioning. And she comforted herself with a thought that she’d buy another one in the future. She would definitely do so, for she would make it out alive.

One last thing, she slid her jacket down to expose the tattoo that should have been gone days ago but was still strangely there. She braced herself from the stinging skin, gritting her teeth in preparation. She slashed the viper’s eyes with her knife to remove the DT in her skin. She winced, but the moment blood oozed out, the marking instantly vanished.

Her brows furrowed, forming a single line. She touched the skin. It felt normal, only feeling the sting from the cut she made. And there was not any microchip in it. She had to make sure. And to do so, she cut herself some more to create an opening for her finger. Sweat was making her face sticky, and her heart thudded along with the rush of blood to her brain. She inserted her finger, trying to locate it. Maybe it had gotten stuck inside.

It hurt like a goddamn! Then she pulled her finger out. There was nothing! Grunting, she gave up and slid back up her jacket. Letting the blood gush from her arms to her wrist. It would stop and heal in just a few minutes.

Then she put on her mask and grabbed the dagger again. She hurriedly went to the door and opened it with a kick to the side since a card wouldn’t work anymore. Emergency lights gave spotlight glows in the hallway, but for the greater part, it was still dark. No problem at all. She got her wolf vision for that.

All the lights and electricity in the camp had been tampered with. It was one of the major downsides of making everything controllable online in a system. It was as well, could make them uncontrollable. With enough skills, someone could take it over.

The people inside the arena went still as emergency lights projected on the platform. But most of the corners were shadowed by darkness. All the movements and voices paused for a few seconds while the others shrieked from the sudden blackout. They were underground. No sunrays could get to them. So, the emergency lights were the only things that could give them vision of their surroundings.

Some coaches pulled out flashlights from their pockets.

"Everyone, stay still!" Lawrenz’s voice boomed in the arena. He opened his phone and tried to contact the assigned personnel in the control room. His colleagues approached his side and stood before him.

Loriena stood among the newbies. She was getting ready with a sparring partner when the lights went out. Also, the other working engines behind the walls died down. There were only noises from the people that buzzed around what was happening. She looked around with her eyes. She could only count on one hand how many times something like this happened. And only for a brief minute.

She counted for minutes to pass for the digital clock hanging on the wall, which stopped working too. Then she heard her father curse a few distances from where she stood, surrounded by other trainers. That only meant one thing.

Her heart thudded loudly for the sickening feeling that started to envelop her. Just as she was about to approach him, Lawrenz called for her.

"Loriena, come here." His tone was set in a hard edge, but there was also worry and uneasiness.

In just a few steps, she reached his side. "What’s happening? Couldn’t they fix it sooner?" She tried to sound as calm as she could.

"They can, of course. But I need you to stick with me." He held her arm pulled her close. "Everyone, stay on alert and follow the coaches!" He announced to the rest.

"Dad, what exactly is happening?" She asked in a desperate tone. She’d thought about Liz. She was out there in a meeting. Though she had Josh by her side, but she couldn’t help worrying about her friend.

The other trainees were instructed by the coaches to stay in the middle of the platform.

Lawrenz dragged his daughter away from the crowd. "Let’s get out of here. I’ll bring you to safety."

"What?" Loriena pulled his arm from her but he held it tighter.

"Keep quiet, Loriena." He hissed.

Gea stepped to his side. "Captain, we had to tell them the whole situation so they would be able of what’s about to happen."

He stopped and nodded his head in approval. "Go ahead, Gea. You do it. I’m bringing Loriena upstairs."

"Be careful."

"Dad!" She exclaimed at him as he continued to pull her to the dark corners of the arena. "Why would you bring me up there?"

She could hear the exclaims of shock from the people on the platform. Some of them had noticed that they were walking away but most were busy listening to the coaches for their tactics and reminders for them if ever they had to face one sooner than later, and not in the cage for that.

"The systems were hacked, Loriena. There’s awaiting chaos behind one of these walls." Lawrenz said and pulled the metal bar up to unlock the emergency door that hadn’t been used in a long time.
