Chapter 127

She threw the man’s body to the standing gunners that made them stumble on the ground. She hurriedly jumped in Josh’s direction. His eyes bulged in alarm as she stood right in front of him. She grabbed his wrist and snatched the phone out of his hand. She crashed it into the wall. The gadget broke from the impact.

She pushed him to the corner so he wouldn’t be hurt by the others. And she fell on her knees in an instant as she sensed guns being cocked. Then came the bullets from the people she left alive, who had pulled themselves up and were shooting at her. She turned around as she grabbed her own gun and aimed at their heads for a sure kill. It was a bullseye.

Three consecutive shots. "One shot, one kill." She praised herself. She couldn’t help the smile that was plastered on her face.

Ah. How I missed this.

The action. The thrill. Maybe even the stench of blood that came from her target. It was a victory for her whenever she saw red from them. It was too different from doing simulation fights and practice shooting. She’d always prefer the real scenarios. Livelier, bloodier, and crueler.

She can feel the blood running in her veins in a rush, a pleasant sensation. There was a maniacal gleam in her eyes as it turned into the half-supernatural that she was. Her black orbs were swallowed by the golden hue, a color of a sunflower petal, rays of the sun. It was breathtaking to look at, but as stunning as it was, a monster inside her owned it. Part of her natural whole being.

Then she turned to the only man she left alive. She stalked in his direction. While doing so, she returned her gun to the lower of her back and took a knife from her waist. It was the sharpest knife she had. She missed using it. And she would never miss the chance of making it taste the blood of this one particular target.

The coldness of the handle pricked her skin, though she had her gloves. Then it instantly turned warm. The coldness was comforting, and the warmth made her pulse vibrate. It was urging for her to have a taste. It was asking for her to take. To touch its silver blade to something that had a life. And she would oblige with complete pleasure.

Josh was on his feet. A gun in his hand. His eyes turned into slits as he stared into her. The man doesn’t look as surprised as he should be at finding out that it was actually her.

"We both know you wouldn’t really want to kill me." She said, not halting on her way.

"Calicia." His jaw was set hard. Muscles in her neck were straining, as if he was restraining himself not to shoot her on the spot. "I should have listened to my instinct before." There was no fear in his eyes. Only regret.

Regret of not killing her? Or whatever that could be, she couldn’t care less.

"Why didn’t you?" She stopped in front of him. Then moved in a blur out of the gun’s way. She wouldn’t like to risk her skull getting dug by a bullet because of her stupid confidence.

Melisca was right beside him. She twisted his arm and smacked the gun away in his hand. She used her strength to swipe him off his feet, and his back thudded on the ground. He groaned from the force. She locked him in the place. Her body blocked any way for him to move. Her knife in his throat. Just an inch. She wouldn’t want his skin to graze the sharp edges yet.

"You really are indeed her daughter." Josh still had the audacity to talk about her mother.

Now that he was at her mercy, she couldn’t just bring herself to kill him. She wanted to hurt him. Hurt him so bad. So bad that it would make him regret hurting and killing her mother back then. She wanted it to be his greatest nightmare as it was hers. She wanted to take her merry time to avenge her mother’s death. But time itself wasn’t in her favor. She was already stretching too much of it.

Her jaw was shaking with rage. Her heart pounding so loudly. Each beat was kicking her to hurt him piece by piece. Images of her mother on the floor, begging for her to be spared, emerged in her eyes. She was back to that scene. Melicia was pushed on the floor. Ready to crawl just to get to her. To make her safe. But then her mother pleaded for her to leave. To save herself.

"Run, Melisca. Run!" Melicia’s voice echoed in her mind.

"I’m not Calicia." She growled, looking into Josh’s eyes, as if everything had just sunk on him. Her being the hybrid that they were actually looking for over the years. As if he’d just realized in total actuality what a monster she was. That there wasn’t any chemical of theirs that would help him now. "I don’t care where you all got that name. I’m Melisca Lorwey. Cabril and Melicia’s daughter."

He stared at her straight in the eyes. The horror in her eyes was slowly fading away. His grip on her wrists to stop her hand from using the knife in her grip. As if he had what it takes to stop her.

Then he laughed. He laughed in her face. "Do you think you can get out of here? Did you really think they would let you off now that you’ve come in their den? You’ve just volunteered yourself to be their livestock." Hints of a maniacal tone were laced in his sentences. "It’s just a shame that I wouldn’t be able to take part in their success in the end."

The word ’livestock’ made her brain clear again from the clouding rage. She had lives to free today. And more to kill after him. He wasn’t worth anymore of her precious time and the lives that were on the line.

She took a sharp breath. She got a whiff of blood everywhere. It made her body pulse as a hammer started to pound in her head again. Of all the time, the fucking headache couldn’t be attacking her now!

"Your mother—" Josh wasn’t able to finish whatever he was about to say as she stabbed her dagger to his heart. Blood bubbled up from his chest. His hand held her wrist, gripping it from what little strength he had left.

"A life..." She didn’t pull out the dagger. Instead, she twisted it. "For a life." That was the words she engraved in her mind when she lost the only parent she left. But it was more like lives for the lives. She couldn’t feel any more right in doing it. There wasn’t satisfaction. Not yet. She wasn’t even halfway on her list of preys.

She was drilling his heart as blood came out from his mouth and more bubbled up like red wine poured out from the bottle. Some even splashed on her face. Her weapon grew warmer in her grip. She felt it pulsing in her palm, thudding along with her own heart. Like it was alive and it was sucking his life faster. She felt the flow of an energy. Feeding her with desire to have more, do more. Her grip tightened as something inside snapped.

The bright yellow in her eyes dull for an instant and she sucked in an air sharply as a wave of strange hunger filled her system. She couldn’t be hungry for food. No. It was something else.

His fingers that were wrapped in her wrist, opened, and his hand fell to the side. His eyes stared to nothingness. She could have danced in triumph. If not only for another pang of pain in her head.

She stood up and took the dagger from his chest. She almost staggered to the side from the hammering in her skull. But she caught herself and clenched her eyes shut as she shook her head.

More blood gushed out and pooled the floor. It still amazed her that the dagger loved and hated the red liquid at the same time. Blood didn’t stick to it when she pulled it out from his heart.
