The Runaway Huntress -

Chapter 111: Chapter 110
Chapter 110
She remained quiet, waiting for what he was about to say next. She looked at his eyes, and it seemed like he was waiting for any of her comments too.
"It already happened." She said without any emotions in her tone. "But I won’t do it again." She added. Yeah, next time it wouldn’t just be a warning.
Josh nodded, taking in her statement. "Good. The moment you do any misconduct again, I would confiscate your own laptop."
"Even if I can be of great help to your team?" She asked without any hesitation.
"You haven’t proven anything yet to my team, Lorwey. But even if you did, it doesn’t mean that you can just trample on someone because you’re more skilled."
Wow. Such words. Coming from monsters themselves. Hypocrites! Dumb animals! What you’re all looking for is right under your noses! How she wanted to spat that out of anger that was slowly creeping in her system.
Of course she’s the only one who can help them. If she revealed herself. She clenched her fists in her sides. She was fuming. She took a deep breath. "I know." She barely opened her mouth and swallowed hard, pressing down the words she wanted to burst out.
Josh sighed and tilted his head to her laptop on the table. "Remember this, you’re the only one who’s allowed to use your laptop. And you connect it to our network here so we can trace whatever you are doing in it."
She looked up to his face. "Anything I open, the network could see it?" She wanted to be clear so she would know what countermeasures she had to do.
"Yes. And it’s only for working purposes, Lorwey. If the system caught you in anything unrelated, the connection would automatically be interrupted." He was giving further rules.
She nodded.
Josh sighed again. If it had been any other person, they would have responded normally in words. But Melisca Lorwey definitely had an attitude. And she was hard to read. Her actions were mostly unpredictable, even when she said something. It reminded him of Melicia. His former best friend. But Melisca was the darker version of the woman. Much darker.
"How long do you think you can give us a result?"
Melisca contemplated for a minute. She had to think this through thoroughly. "Can I also get deployed already to go to the area she was last seen?"
"I’ve already tasked some people in our team to do the investigation there."
"I would like to do it myself. Give me this chance. I’m confident about it." She stepped forward to his table. She wanted him to think that she was being sincere in her desire to help.
"Lorwey." Josh sat down on his swivel chair. He was biting his lips while looking at the table.
"You said you needed new blood. New ways of doing things or better ways."
"Are you saying our ways are outdated?" Though he felt insulted, he was also amazed in this woman’s thoughts.
"I don’t want to point that out. But there’s nothing left to lose anyway since you’ve been stuck in not finding out anything about her in the past years." She blurted honestly.
He liked her honesty in things, but she just had a sharp tongue for saying it frankly.
He couldn’t stop giving a chuckle, though. And Melisca’s eyebrows furrowed a little in confusion. He cleared his throat. "I’ll give you the answer in a few days. For now, just work first on your laptop. Remember all the warnings I’d said, Lorwey."
"Of course." She nodded.
Josh waited for her to reach for the laptop already, but she was just standing still. They stared at each other for a few seconds.
"What are you waiting for? Take it." He pulled his body back to lean on the chair.
Melisca instantly grabbed it before he could change his mind any second.
Then Josh propped the laptop case and its charger on the table. He kept them inside the lower cabinet that was attached to the desk. He wanted to open and check Melisca’s laptop earlier, but he couldn’t get through her password. Even their skilled technologist in the team couldn’t open it. That’s when they knew then that Melisca might have competent skills in computers too.
In the meeting they had earlier, they were hesitating to give Melisca her own laptop or anything that she could use online at all when they couldn’t even open her system. It was a risk, but some members were convinced that her great skills in it too could be useful. Tyla was one of the members who agreed and convinced some of the members.
And he was reminded again of what happened in the meeting. His blood boiled at Tyla’s honest words that his team remained stagnant and hopeless for not having any update through the years. It triggered the other committee members to agree with her. So, now, he was giving Melisca her laptop.
He just hoped that they wouldn’t be making any mistakes and that this Melisca Lorwey was their ally till the end. She’s a strong force to be reckoned with.
"I’ll be going then."
That woke him up from his thoughts, and he nodded at her before she turned around and headed to the door.
Melisca released a huge sigh of relief when the door closed behind her. She hugged her laptop and its case close to her chest. "I never knew I could miss you like this." She mumbled and wanted to kiss it, and she did. Even if she looked stupid. At least she had her laptop back.
She put it inside the case and held it by the hand strap. People looked at her curiously and the thing that she was holding. She smiled at them randomly. She was just so happy. And she unconsciously looked around for someone. A bit expecting that Lorna was waiting for her to know what it was about. But the girl wasn’t around. She started to proceed on her way to the dorm then.
She just passed by the lobby when Carmen noticed her and she bid goodnight to a group of friends she was talking to. She hurriedly got into step with Melisca. They were now in the hallway to their dorm.
"Looks like someone’s in a blissful mood." She commented. Melisca was beaming to everyone. That was quite shocking. "Is that your laptop?"
"Yeah."
"That’s great then. You won’t feel bored anymore." Carmen didn’t have to ask the reason why they gave it back to her because she already had the idea.
People were left with confusion and curiosity in their faces of why she was carrying a laptop. Trainees wasn’t allowed of any gadget.
"Yeah." Her reply with a smile. "I’d be busy with something."
Carmen found it really weird to see Melisca smiling. "So, I guess you’ll be transferring room now or tomorrow?"
The woman’s forehead knotted. "What are you talking about?"
They were almost in front of their dorm.
"It’s obvious you’re not a trainee anymore. You’re a certified hunter now. You got the privilege of using a gadget in the camp."
"So?"
"Duh!" Carmen rolled her eyes at Melisca’s lack of knowledge. "That means you’ll be having your own room in the hunter’s quarters." She exclaimed and flipped her red hair behind her.
Melisca didn’t know if she should be glad about it but no one told her yet. She knew just now.
But she was hesitating about it. Yes, she would have her own room and space but it wasn’t entirely a privacy because there could still be cameras in the room. She’d be the sole focus of the CCTV. Which she had to evade somehow. In her current dorm, there were a lot of other distractions, other people that they had to monitor.
"What if I refuse to transfer?"
Carmen was currently scanning her card to enter the room, and Melisca quickly followed before it closes automatically.
"Oh, you’ll miss me?" Carmen was just kidding.
The redhead followed her to her bedspace.
Melisca was getting use to Carmen’s taunts which she often didn’t react back.
"I don’t know if you’re allowed to reject it." She shrugged her shoulders. "You can try. Besides, it’s more fun here. There’s a lot going on around. There’ll be a lot to miss." She winked at Melisca before she entered the bathroom.
Melisca’s lips tilted up a little in a smile. She doesn’t know if Carmen intentionally said it with another meaning. Because yes, there would be a lot to miss when there were many people in the same area. The CCTV wouldn’t be able to spot everything precisely.
