Chapter 100: Chapter 99
Chapter 99
Tyla led them to another door inside the lab. She checked the paper posted beside the card scanner first to confirm that it’s the safest day to enter.
While the woman was busy with what she was reading on the paper, Melisca looked up and read the signage above, ’Supernatural Room’.
"Melisca, look." Tyla called her attention and pointed to something on the paper. "It’s Tuesday now. It’s the safest day to enter the room. Why? Because they’ve just cleaned, sanitized, and fed them yesterday. Though it doesn’t really make any difference. They’re always hungry and thirsty."
"They don’t feed them regularly?"
Tyla stared into her eyes directly and shook her head. "No. They feed them if they behave and comply without any violent reactions."
"They’re not pets." She said it without hesitation. It’s the first thing that came to her mind.
"No, Melisca. They’re not."
She bit her tongue to keep quiet. To not let out any more comments that could make her suspicious that she was totally against what the organization was doing.
Tyla noticed her being silent, so she continued to discuss things with her. "Anyway, that door over there." She pointed to a glass door not far from where they were standing. "You can put on safety gear and outfits if you don’t want to be contaminated by any chemicals inside. And you don’t need any cards to open the door. You can just get inside anytime. Here we go." She scanned her card, and the door slid open itself.
The moment the door opened, Melisca instantly felt herself drained by some invisible force. Her system weakened. It was the ABD. The chemical was too strong in the closed space. Her knees were buckling. She exhaled frustratingly and withdrew all her senses that she wore like armor on her skin.
She embraced her mortal side. It was making her uneasy as they were inside the place with various supernatural beings. Though they were in each cell and sedated as well, it doesn’t make her feel any less safe.
The place was all white. From the ceiling to the walls and down to the floor. There was a center aisle, and each side was a row of doors, windowed with bars to see the inside. Every side of the door had papers stuck on the wall.
"Those papers are their monitoring sheets. You can read at the top what type of supernatural is inside that cell." Tyla explained, and she moved forward. Melisca followed her.
"Are all the captives here? Are they the only ones?"
Tyla chuckled and glanced back at her. "No, of course not. There were other captives with other organization headquarters all around the world. But in this country, we only have them." She spread her arms to refer to the whole place. "You can check who’s inside." Tyla pointed to any door.
Melisca approached one, and she stopped in her tracks as Nesa’s face was at the barred window. She sauntered closer to her with careful steps. She noticed that her neck had somehow healed with pink scars.
"Melisca, there are CCTVs in all the corners here. Everything can be seen but not heard. They don’t record the audio because the screams are annoying." Tyla stated that behind her, she was checking the monitoring sheets of the other cells.
Nesa looked past her to the white-haired woman. And then she returned her gaze to Melisca.
"Don’t trust her." Nesa whispered.
She only nodded. Of course she won’t. The woman could just be bluffing about the audio thing.
Nesa’s eyes wandered behind her again, and she could hear footsteps approaching. "Are you making friends with her? She was the werewolf you fought yesterday." Tyla stepped into her side and stared at Nesa.
"Nesa, how are your burns?" It was like a mocking question. The she-wolf held the bar with both hands and gripped it so hard. She was trying to break the metal to let her arm pass the barrier and reach for the woman’s throat. And she growled.
"Save your strength. You’re under ABD. There’s nothing you can do." Tyla then moved to the next door.
She only stared at Nesa, who was fuming with anger. Her nostrils even flared as she breathed. "She’s right." She mumbled and walked away from her cell. She went on to the next and read the information on the paper. Another wolf.
Melisca took quick glances inside the barred windows without reading their details anymore. Some made comments about her appearance, but everyone was hostile and bared their teeth at her.
In one cell, she saw a huge aquarium, and her eyes widened. Its half body was of a woman, and the lower part was of a fish. She had two gills on each side of her ribs. A fin-like ear. It looked like wings. Her skin tone was fair. She had ocean blue, doe eyes, puckered lips, slightly hollowed cheeks, and a straight nose.
She’s just serenely magnificent. Added to that is her wine-colored hair that floats around her shoulder to her lower back. Kids could have seen her as the Little Mermaid. Except that she wasn’t little at all. Her tail was long, and she could scare anyone anytime.
Her upper chest was covered with red, shiny scales, the same color as her tail, with short fins at the sides. Her caudal fin had sharp lines, though. She stepped closer to the door to see them more clearly since she can’t use her wolf vision. They were sharp indeed because those could be claws, along with the fins at the back of her forearm. Those can turn into spikes if she is enraged. She could smile with perfect human teeth, but they could turn into razor-sharp bones if they let out their true nature.
She looked up her details at the side and her thought was right. She wasn’t a mer. She’s a siren. The two were often mistaken to be the same, especially in movies and books. They only share the same world, in the water. But they were completely different.
Sirens were the warriors of the deep. They’re the sea assassins. They’re cruel and easily provoked supernatural race in their world. On the other hand, the Mers were much kinder and approachable beings. But they could kill with their blissful voice. Sirens could sing too but their voice wasn’t as powerful as the Mers.
-Xyerin the siren-
The title reads. Her name is Xyerin (Zai-rin).
Melisca glanced inside again. The siren was staring at her with emotionless eyes.
"She looked magical, doesn’t she?" Melisca flinched from Tyla’s voice. She did not notice the woman return to her side. She was so drawn to the siren’s appearance.
"Yes." Her reply as she continued to stare at the supernatural inside the aquarium. The gills in her ribs were making bubbles. So that’s how they breathe underwater.
"If she ever used her voice, electricity would touch the water. It could fry her. They set up a device that could detect any vibration." Then Tyla moved to the other side of the cells, across the siren’s door. "Here, we have another magical being."
