Chapter 97: You’re Not A Monster
Chapter 97: You’re Not A Monster
Isadora aimed her blade to pierce The Snákr’s head but it was already too late, its fang had already pierced deeply into her stomach, the force causing her blood to splash around the air.
She grunted in pain as her hold on her sword gave out, her hand placed on the creature colossal’s head.
The Snákr shrieked as it broke through the earth and emerged back at the arena, Isadora’s body dropping to the ground.
Logi straightened his position, as his nerves worked him to the core. Nyssa gulped heavily, her wide eyes on the scene.
Kraven rose from his throne, walking to the ledge and hands rested against the cold stone. His stern eyes were on Isadora’s bleeding form. He could still hear her heartbeat. She’s still alive.
Isadora’s hand flinched, the piercing sounds of The Snákr’s shriek breaking through her subconscious. It no longer sounded like a terrifying creature but a crying one.
When she touched the creature, she felt something, like an open wound was touched and she could finally see what made it bleed.
She forced her body to stand, enduring the agonizing seconds it took to steady herself. Her legs nearly gave out, but the creature sounds called to her, keeping her upright.
"I-I-I can hear you," she murmured faintly, clenching her side, oozing blood. "P-Pain."
Isadora lifted her gaze and sad eyes landed on the creature. "You’re in pain."
The Snákr growled, keeping its obsidian eyes on the mortal.
Grunting, she forced her body forward, blood dripping onto the ground with each step. Yet, she didn’t stop.
"What is she doing?"
"It’ll eat her!"
"Her defenses are down."
"What is she thinking?"
"Does she have a death wish?"
"Why is she speaking to it?"
"She’s crazy."
The ravenites murmurs filled the arena.
"Foolish girl, walking to her own death," Nyssa said.
"Something is not right," Logi said for certain keeping his eyes trained on her. ’Something is definitely not right.’
Kraven gripped the stone tightly, almost crushing it under his hold. He recognized this.
The Snákr frustration grew, seething at what this mortal was doing. It lunged, not to attack, but to shriek right in her face, its wrath reverberating through the air like a force meant to shatter her resolve—to break whatever kept this mortal on her feet.
And yet, to its surprise, the mortal remained unfazed. The look in her pale amber eyes almost drained of life, unsettled it.
The breeze caressed Isadora’s face, but she did not falter, only staring at the creature with sad eyes.
She had thought it all wrong... she was so engrossed in fighting against a beast—to survive, not realizing that all this time she was challenging a broken creature.
It wasn’t fair.
"I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have attacked you." She stretched her hand toward it. "I’m sorry."
It snarled, baring its large fangs at her but Isadora only saw it as a reason to get closer and touch the creature’s head, her red weaves slipping through it.
Isadora gasped as tears slid down her face, feeling the kind of horror and burden it bore alone for centuries; alone, damaged, and abandoned.
Cast aside because it was untamed and different. It must have only fueled the creature’s rage, day after day, until eventually, there was nothing left to feel.
"You’re not a monster," she said, feeling everything as if it were her own, and only breaking her heart more. "We’re just imperfect."
The Snákr closed its eyes and leaned into her touch more. "Do not be sad, let me unburden you."
She took its pain, its agony, and bore it all. Her body succumbed to the weight that had once burdened this gentle creature, and in doing so, she healed it.
When the Snákr opened its eyes, it wasn’t the soulless obsidian eyes that had instilled fear, but pure rubies that reminded her of Rav’s eyes, but it shone brighter, purer, and more beautiful than anything she had ever seen.
A gentle smile found her lips as the creature leaned more into her touch, rubbing against her small hand, and hissed softly.
The Snákr’s ruby eyes landed on her bleeding wound, and gently leaned away, the ground vibrating as it circled her, weaves slipped from the red scales into her wounds, healing them completely.
The pain left Isadora’s body and no part of her hurt anymore. She lifted her gaze to the creature and smiled. "Thank you."
It leaned toward her again, this time circling gently around her small frame before crawling away into the tunnel.
"Does this count as a win?" Logi said, startled and confused.
"She was meant to defeat the creature, not turn it into a pet!" Nyssa snapped, more shocked about the whole thing but this was a total fail.
Isadora faced the still crowd. She had failed the challenge but for some reason, she didn’t care, after all, she wasn’t here to prove anything to anyone except show them what an imperfect being could do.
She eagerly believed she had met her goal.
Turning on her heels she limped out of the quiet arena, not caring about anything else.
Her wounds were healed but something felt off. It wasn’t her body, but her head—everything spun and the dizziness overwhelmed her.
She placed her hand on the wall for support, her breathing became ragged as the world around her blurred.
Yet, she kept forcing herself to keep moving, she groaned as she heard sounds in her ears, she looked around for the source of them but she was the only one within the threshold or so she thought.
When she faced ahead, she found Kraven standing, watching her with an unreadable expression. He appeared double before her eyes and the entire place spun too, before vibrating beyond her control.
"A-Are you here to take my s-soul?" she asked softly, her eyes growing heavy. She shook her head to keep the fatigue away, determined to speak.
"Y-Y-You can take it... I d-don’t need it anymore," she mumbled as she staggered backward, as the spins got worse. "I’m ready to greet D-Daudi."
She swallowed heavily, drawing sharply on her breath. "A-And I’ve no prayers to say to... I..." she couldn’t finish because it got harder to speak.
"You played with fire again, Isadora."
Her eyes rolled at the back of her head and her body collapsed, succumbing to the darkness.
