Chapter 50: A Devil In The Dark

Isadora’s wide eyes were fixed on the whip that had nearly taken her head, but it was caught by a bandaged hand.

"Logi!" Nyssa gasped with wide eyes. What was he doing?

"No rules in duels Nyssa, but this isn’t a fight to the death," he said. "So don’t spill unwelcomed blood on my turf" he added, irritated.

Rav came forward and helped Isadora up who was still in shock. "Are you alright?" he asked worriedly.

"Get lost," Logi snapped to her.

Isadora was shaken but she pulled away from Rav knowing if she stayed her head would roll off her shoulder. It was hard not to miss the murderous intent emitting from Nyssa.

"Go!" Rav urged.

She turned on her heels and ran.

Isadora’s breaths were rough and unstable as she descended the stairs, clutching her stomach in pain.

She turned her head—although she was getting further and further away from the entrance it felt as if Nyssa had followed her to finish the job.

She leaned against the wall, trying to catch her breath and stop her body from trembling so violently.

Squeezed her eyes shut and then opened them again, but the feeling didn’t fade. Pushing herself away from the wall, she forced herself to keep moving.

But suddenly a hand grabbed her mouth, silencing her screams as she was pulled into darkness.

"I leave you alone for a few weeks and you cause such havoc in my court, you surprise me, love... much more than I expected" the sound of the deep gruff voice caused shivers down her spine.

Isadora clawed at the big hand in her mouth as she tried to struggle out of his hold.

Kraven chuckled at her weak attempts. "Did you miss me, love?" he asked in a much deeper voice causing her body to stiffened.

The strangest feeling washed over her at his words.

"I can tell" he added as he leaned and took a sniff of her hair.

It was sweet and warm, with a rich undertones... the scent of honey. A whiff of the delicious fragrance caused his body to pulse alive.

"I know you did," he murmured, releasing her, causing her to stumble away into the dark.

"Get away from me!" she yelled in fear, not directed at him, but at the dark.

Kraven watched with amused gaze as she swirled around to look for any source of light.

He observed closely as her breaths became increasingly unstable. The spike in her heartbeat and the constant gulp she made.

The dark was not her comfort.

Isadora panicked as tears were on the verge of spilling, her hands tapping on the walls but there was no direction to go to.

She could tell... she could feel it—eyes were on her.

On cue, her gaze landed on silver eyes like the crescent moon staring back at her. And dread like the deepest part of the ocean, plugged through her.

"Why are you afraid of the dark, Isadora?" his voice was distant but at the same time it wasn’t.

It was everywhere.

"Get away!" she voiced retreating backward. "Please."

Suddenly the eyes were gone leaving her alone, only the sound of her raspy breathing could be heard.

Everything was pitch black and it felt like she would drown in the dark and her scream would be muffled. Her body grew cold and her mind began to shut.

But the sudden breath against her neck caused her body to tense at the same time it came alive.

He’s behind her, so close she could feel his body heat.

"What you should fear in the dark is me" he voiced. "The dark hides many things, not just the shadows, they can’t do anything to you..."

Her lips came apart when he clutched her neck. "But I can..."

She screamed when he grabbed her and fling her over his shoulder.

"Put me down!" she thrashed, trying to break free, but her efforts only earned a laugh from him.

He began carrying her away to gods know where.

The last thing she wanted was to be taken away by him... again.

Isadora was dropped on soft grass, her eyes slowly adjusting to the light. Her eyes in slits, traced down to his thighs before moving up to his face, where a smirk was plastered on his lips and his head tilted to the side.

She swallowed a lump in her throat, taking in his devilishly handsome look, he looked different, felt different.

His shaded silver hair was in braids, thick and prominent—starting at the front hairline, reaching the scruff of his neck, offering a rousing outlook.

"You caused quite a disturbance, love," he said, squatting down to her level, and she shifted instinctively.

"The mannfae who cheated the Spine," he broke into a peal of laughter, casually bringing his fist to his lips. "That is the last thing anyone would do and challenging Nyssa?" he shook his head unable to contain his amusement.

’By the Olden gods, she’s wonderful’

"I’m not a cheater!" those words were suddenly becoming like sand in her mouth. It was like throwing a handful of it without reaction. "What’s the use of saying that," she voiced looking away.

In hopes of trying to clear her name she ended up also getting killed.

Feeling a hand on her jaw she was forced to face him, there was an irritated look on Kraven’s face all of a sudden. "Are you crying, Isadora?"

At the realization she felt the cold water running down her face. The last thing she wanted was crying in front of Kraven of all people, but she couldn’t help it.

She was overwhelmed, scared, in pain and last of all... she hated herself.

"Bask in the joy of seeing my tears," She murmured. He should be pleased because this was exactly what he wanted.

Kraven’s teeth clenched as he stood up abruptly with her, forcing her to face the lake in front of them. "Do you know why they called you a cheat?" he whispered to her ears.

"Does it matter? You’re all perfect, because someone imperfect did something they could all achieve and they all grunt about it."

Kraven chuckled deeply, the sound vibrating through his chest and causing goosebumps to Isadora’s skin.

"Grunt you say? That’s a bit harsh, love," he spun her around to face him. "They call you a cheat because they think you’re weak."

She frowned.

"That is why you defiled the odds and ran the Spine in the dead of the night... not because you wanted to prove anything, but because you were trying to prove to yourself... you are not weak."

She gasped at his words, wondering how he knew when she ran the Spine. ’Was he watching me?’

"Guess what love, you didn’t prove anything... you’re a lost cause after all."

Suddenly he shoved her into the water before she could react, watching as it swallowed her whole.

"This water devours the weak. I finally get the satisfaction of watching you drown."
