Chapter 30: The Peaceful Seas Never Last
Isadora’s eyes were fixated on a land that could be seen from a distance. Her golden blonde hair flowed in the wind.
The smell of the sea was quite pleasant. It might not be the kind of adventure she would have hoped to have but a few days on sea—peacefully—was much welcomed.
Her mind had been in a dark space and taking in this panorama cleared the dark cloud hanging over her head, not completely but at least she wasn’t swallowed by them.
"Isadora"
Swiftly, she turned at the sound of her name. Rav stood watching her intensely. "It’s time to get off"
"What is that land?" she asked before turning to it.
It was quite vast, unlike Brookcrest—a small country only famous for its brothels.
Meeting Rav’s silence she chose to follow instead of asking more questions. The answers she would get are when she sees for herself. It was suddenly becoming a thing with these men.
They entered a rowboat, paddling away from the ship that became miles away with each distance until they neared a cave, which opened at the base of a rock cliff, its mouth wide and dark, with the sound of waves emitting inside.
Isadora grew uneasy as they paddled closer and prayed that wasn’t their destination but it was.
They stepped out of the boat.
Isadora tried to steady herself because of the damp ground. Kraven walked just behind a boulder and grabbed two torches and tossed one to Rav which he caught with ease and weaved his flames to light it up.
"Are you good?" Rav asked suddenly, noticing how tautened she was.
Isadora stiffly nodded in response, her eyes briefly caught Kraven gazing at her, the first eye contact in days and she quickly looked away.
"D-Do we have to go through the cave?" she asked shakily.
"Yes," Rav replied.
Isadora visibly gulped as her eyes followed the dark path that led to gods know where.
What is it with these outlaws and taking dangerous routes? There could be a monstrous beast in there. She knew the echoes were just from the sea waves but her mind made it into something more.
"Are you afraid of the dark, Isadora?"
Her eyes quickly snapped at Kraven who had a smirk on his lips, the look in his eyes intentionally spoke to her. She gulped once again confirming her fears and earning a chuckle from him.
"I-I’m not!" she forced, with flushed cheeks—embarrassed and angry.
"It’s alright, we have the torches," Rav said, trying to ease her but it did not help.
Her widened eyes stared erratically at the dark entrance like some beast would emerge any second.
"Rav, lead the way," Kraven said.
Rav nodded and attempted to walk forward but she grabbed his arm tightly. He turned to her confused and caught off guard by her advances.
"L-Let me walk with you, please" she begged desperately, gripping his arm tightly. She felt safer with him.
Kraven’s smile slowly fell at her words but he chose silence as he watched Rav nod stiffly and lead the way with Isadora secured beside him.
His heated gaze was on her hand clutching his biceps like her life depended on it.
A foreign feeling overwhelmed him and his response to this unwelcomed urge was to pop a loosened muscle around his neck and follow behind.
Isadora felt her back strangely burning from Kraven’s intense stare but chose to ignore it. Her mind was racing because of this dark space.
The lights helped but it didn’t stop the anxiety from building, she tried to steady her breathing as her eyes flashed around for any possible movement that wasn’t theirs, she leaned more into Rav and squeezed her eyes shut.
She could feel her heartbeat pulsing in her ears, but she refused to open her eyes not until she felt her butt sit on a surface and she opened her eyes and met with scarlet ones.
"Here" he gave a flask and she grabbed it, taking a drink to quench her dry throat.
Her heartbeat still thundered out of control and her body still trembled. She felt Rav’s hand on hers, holding it tightly to stop the quakes.
"It’s okay, we’re out of the cave now"
She blinked, letting her eyes take in her surroundings, they had made their way out of the cave and into a forest, the sun was so bright that it almost blinded her. How did they get here through a cave?
"T-Thank you" she mumbled. "I’m not good with the dark"
"Why—"
A sharp whistle distracted them and they both turned to Kraven calling for something, the sharp tone echoing around the vast space.
Rav glanced back to Isadora. "We should get going, can you stand?"
She nodded and he helped her up her feet with his hands secured around her waist causing Isadora to blush at the close contact, his hands were so big and her body felt like a twig compared to his.
A sharp-pitched growl came through causing Isadora to flinch and her eyes darted to the coming Bicorns. She had never seen them up close before.
They were large creatures with two curved horns on their heads, muscular bodies, and flowing manes that made them look both powerful and ominous.
One of them was the color of dark silver with an ash mane similar to its horn. It hurried towards Rav and he stepped forward to greet his stallion.
"Blaze," he said with a smile pressed against his lips as Blaze nudged his head with snorty growls. "I’ve missed you, boy"
Isadora was amazed by how tamed this creature was and reciprocated Rav’s affection. He spoke in Faetong and the beast seemed to understand and relayed its own through growls and snorts.
A smile found Isadora’s lips at the affection portrayed between a Fae and a Bicorn. She had heard stories about them bonding with these creatures for life, she never thought she would see this day.
"Rav" Kraven spoke and gave a look that only two of them shared.
"Understood," Rav said before mounting his Bicorn. He turned to Isadora who stared at him confusedly. "I’ll see you"
Before Isadora could speak he spoke to his Bicorn in Faetong and it raced away.
Isadora’s heartbeat thudded in her chest as she watched Rav go, leaving her alone with the last person she wanted to be with.
"Come on, love I don’t have all day"
She turned to him, gasping. He had already mounted his Bicorn which was far from as beautiful as Rav’s. It looked like a shadow with not a glimpse of color, down to its mane and eyes.
"Come" he stretched his hand out for her to take.
