Chapter 29: Dreams Are The Future We Don’t Look Forward To
Isadora’s pulse quickened, she couldn’t begin to think of what he meant by disciplining her and chose to keep it that way.
She didn’t want to indulge his absurd ways—it was like his eyes begged her to.
Her mind was suddenly consumed by his earlier words. Her energy was expelled by the thought of gaining freedom—The constant need to grasp something unattainable.
Freedom
That term was becoming a castle in the sky.
How would she truly find freedom when the world was unkind to her? The danger was in every step she took—not exactly how she imagined it.
Winter after winter, she dreamt of a day when, by the gods’ mercy, she would one day be whisked away from that tower.
Every day, she prayed for that fateful day, but it never came.
Maybe it did come but not in the way she intended.
"If anyone gets a glimpse of what I truly am the first thing is to sell me" she voiced in a pained resentful tone.
Maybe Thornfoot saw it and sold her off, the same with everybody.
It was an endless nightmare.
Dashwell held her captive for winters until he was done with her, coming to the conclusion she wasn’t of any use anymore. She wasn’t sure which part scared her most, being sold or useless.
"But you..." she brought her eyes to the man who had not only taken her freedom but chose to keep her. "...you’re not like them"
"I appreciate the compliment," he mused.
"It’s not," she enforced.
He licked his lips. "I told you I wouldn’t let you go"
She desperately wanted to ask his reason but knowing Kraven he wouldn’t answer.
"What awaits me then?" she asked instead.
"Struggles" he grabbed the jug and turned ale into a cup. "Many struggles"
"My life has always been a struggle"
"Not like this, love" he veered the cup to her.
She eyed the drink, completing her thoughts before eventually grabbing the cup and chugging the drink like water. At the burning taste, she spit it off and coughed.
This was Fae ale?! She had seen many people—even Serena drink this like water but it was far from it—It tasted awful!
Kraven chuckled and she glared knowing he did it on purpose. Everything was always an amusement for him and irritated her to no end.
"Don’t focus on how it tastes, focus on how it makes you feel"
"Charming words" she murmured, going back to eating and hoping he didn’t engage with her anymore, however, that was too much to ask from him.
He’s always in a chatty mood and the need to frustrate her.
"When you sleep, what do you dream about?"
Isadora paused at his repetitive question, her spoon halfway to her mouth. She veered her ambers to his silver ones.
They always looked unforgiving but it was hard to miss the curiosity in them.
"My dreams are mine," she replied sternly. She does not wish to share, he has taken many things from her, and he can’t take her mind too.
She can’t have him know she doesn’t have the ability to dream.
The corner of his lips switched at her response. "Do you dream of someone?"
Isadora narrowed her confused gaze at him because for someone who cannot dream that was a mystery.
"S-Someone?" she voiced in a shaky tone, her pulse quickened further and the need to turn away was great, however for a peculiar reason she couldn’t seem to do so, trapped in those crazed eyes that spelled things she couldn’t begin to mention.
"Do you know what it means to dream of someone?"
’What is he talking about?’ she thought, greatly confused.
He tilted his head to the side as he went on, the smirk on his lips wider. "To dream of eyes where you see yourself through it and it just... becomes endless"
Isadora visibly gulped. She had never had such a dream or any in fact so she didn’t understand what he spoke of.
Perhaps the ale had gotten to his head and now he just spoke gibberish to get a rise out of her but his next words were like a dagger to her heart.
"You don’t know what it means do you?" he said viciously. "You’re truly an impure blood to the bones. The gods unfavored you like a pest, they tolerate you"
His features twisted in a frown. "You have a short lifespan, unable to wield your true nature, and now you can’t even Tether. How pitiful"
Isadora’s chest burned at his words and it felt like a slap to her face.
Of course, she knew that... Being born like this meant she couldn’t assess the gifts of the gods, being a skin weaver was more of a curse than a blessing from them because it had never brought her fortune.
Her lip quivered as she forced her eyes away from his, squeezing them shut briefly. She rose to her feet and turned away as the feeling consumed her.
"Did I hurt you, Isadora?"
She stopped in her tracks, her heartbeat thudded and her eyes stung. Summoning the little courage she had left she turned to him.
"Y-You’re cruel"
"I am, love"
"You said we’re the same but we’re not. In the end, I’m the outcast, Kraven, bask in the joy of it" She turned on her heels and walked away.

Isadora slammed the door shut leaning against it as she let the tears fall. She broke down about her fate and about everything she had been through.
Sniffling, she walked to the dresser and pulled out a mirror, positioned it, and took a step back.
She ripped the scarf around her head and pulled her hair behind her ears, she eyed them with disdain. She had never hated them but now she did, she despised them to the core.
She pulled out her dagger from her thigh holding them with two hands, they trembled as she thought of what could free her. She would rather be deformed than be an impure blood.
But she couldn’t do it
’Did I hurt you, Isadora?’
Kraven’s words tormented her mind. ’Don’t give in’ she thought. ’Don’t!’
That cruel man did not get to decide how tragic her life should be, his words shouldn’t affect her, and they shouldn’t make her succumb to something as harming herself.
She gazed into the fractured mirror, taking in her reflection—bloodshot eyes and flushed cheeks.
’But why do I feel forsaken?’
