Chapter 334: Chapter 334 – I’m not ready to be a mother or a wife
Devin was speeding, going against traffic regulations to get to the clinic before Matilda.
Ever since she requested driving herself to school, he refrained from tracking her, only holding on to her calls informing him of her arrival at the school.
However, after what he saw on her phone, he took back the trust he once gave her and began to track her with her other phone.
Every speed and closeness sent his heart racing as he feared whether or not she had gone ahead with the procedure, especially when her location was shown to be at the clinic.
Devin suddenly missed having a best friend, but he knew he was alone since he didn’t have one.
He jumped out of his car when he reached the hospital car park, as he kept tracking her location.
When the tracker began blinking faster, it only increased his fears, knowing he was close.
As he reached the door of a consultation room led by the tracking, a sigh of relief left his mouth as he convinced himself that the procedure had not begun.
As his hand was about to touch the knob, he froze at the sound of Matilda’s voice.
"What do you mean by my womb isn’t healthy?"
"Did you consume excessive alcohol in the past?"
"I was depressed."
"It’s affected you. Since you got this chance, please don’t waste it. I think you should think about it again."
Devin thought she would reconsider after what the doctor had told her and was about to turn around and leave like he was never there, just as her following words crashed his soul.
"I already did, and you are wasting time."
He held the knob, about to turn it when a female nurse spoke behind him,
"Sir, you can’t go in."
Anger surged through Devin, and he glared at her; she froze and shifted backward. Devin turned the knob with a shattered heart due to the revelation that Matilda would abort their love seed without informing him.
Even after knowing she would not have another child, she did not hesitate to terminate it.
"Sir, this is private," the doctor said, beckoning the nurse to send him away, but Devin stood there with his arms folded to his chest, the glare from his orbs as fierce as a bottomless pit.
The nurse was even scared to speak to him when he glared at her and said in a cold, angry tone,
"Private is if she got impregnated by herself."
The doctor, who did not want to get sued as he knew Devin because of his collections, quickly defended himself.
"Over here, she already said that the father didn’t want the child," the doctor showed him the record where Matilda had answered the question about her reason for wanting to abort the child.
Matilda shivered and could barely lift her head to look at Devin, afraid that his demeanor might kill her resolve to go through with it.
Devin was broken as the certainty of Matilda’s decision struck him. He was willing to die for this woman and would do anything for her if she just asked.
He felt terrible that she wanted to eliminate their child without remorse.
Devin blinked, and his eyes were red from holding back his tears. "Matilda, since you already planned to skip school today, we should talk at home."
There was calmness in his face as he swallowed the pain he felt inside.
Matilda was numb and could not raise her head as Devin dragged her by the arm out of the hospital and into his car. He might have someone drive her car home later.
The journey back to the penthouse was the tensest Matilda had ever experienced, and she wished they would never get there, but it was equally the fastest to her disappointment.
She was dragged out of the car after Devin as soon as Devin pulled over, and his hand on her arm dropped as soon as they entered the living room.
"Did you miss your pills at any time?" Devin asked. His voice was dry, and there was no warmth in it.
He tried his best to speak calmly so she could be hit with remorse and change her decision to terminate the pregnancy.
"No. I don’t know how it happened," Matilda responded with her head lowered. Devin walked past her and to the sofa.
Throwing his car key on the glass center table after sitting on the couch, he asked her again,
"When did you find out?"
Due to the calmness of his voice, Matilda felt comfortable and could not lie to him. "A few weeks ago."
She knew that Devin had always been reasonable.
However, she missed the bitterness and pain beaded together in his eyes since she did not have the guts to make eye contact.
"Same time you requested to be driving in and out of school," Devin deciphered. He never tried to dominate her because he saw such men as weak.
He loved and respected her, granting her wishes, as she kept taking advantage of them. He was too soft for her but did not regret it since love or marriage could not be forced.
"Devin, I’m not ready to be a mother or a wife. I already told you," Matilda said seriously, holding his gaze for the first time since they arrived but quickly dropping it.
Devin smiled bitterly, realizing his mistake. Perhaps he should not have given her the ring when he said she was unready. That was his mistake.
"Yes, you did, but don’t you think I should know about my child before anything happens to him or her?" He glared at her and asked, but Matilda was adamant, and her response was unfeeling.
"It’s my body."
Devin shook his head with disappointment and asked her, "Am I responsible for the pregnancy?"
His question hurt Matilda; she glared at him with her voice raised.
"How can you even ask me that? You are the only man I have gotten intimate with."
Devin glared back at her and responded, "But you just said it’s your body."
She was ashamed to realize it wasn’t what she thought he meant and said, "I meant it differently."
Devin sat down and stated his demand.
"You don’t want the child, but I want it, so what will we do about it?" He asked seriously, but the last glint of hope he had for her and their relationship dropped by her response.
