Chapter 333: Chapter 333 – Busted
A day earlier
"Babe, you’ll be late for school," Devin cooed in Matilda’s ears. She woke up groggily and stared at him, looking lost.
"Is it morning already?" She asked, and Devin smiled a little before revealing,
"It’s thirty minutes before your class starts."
Matilda was not surprised because he had all her timetables and knew the names of most of her lecturers and school colleagues.
"Oh shit!" Matilda hissed and abruptly got out of bed.
Devin always sought a way to help since her school was loaded with many practicals, which exhausted her by the end of the day.
"I will make you breakfast," he proposed, and Matilda did not refuse.
Most times, the only food she ate throughout the day since she began going to school was what Devin made her.
She was always too busy, and breakfast would carry her till she returned in the evening.
A few minutes later, she was dressed and met Devin in the kitchen.
"Devin, please don’t worry about breakfast. I’m already late."
Devin was unhappy about the idea; she might not eat all day. He was almost done anyway.
However, looking at her, his heart sank.
"Did you even shower? Babe, you don’t look good. Let me take you to the hospital for a check-up," he suggested, worry evident in his voice.
Matilda’s heart thumped at the mention of the hospital. If Devin found out, then her chances would be ruined.
"NO," she screamed, but when she caught his suspicious gaze, she quickly corrected herself, saying,
"Sorry, I mean, it’s just stress. No need for the hospital. I will rest well over the weekend and feel better."
Devin pursed his lips, not liking the idea but careful not to force his way.
"Alright, if you say so," Devin handed over the food pack to her, leaning in for a kiss, but she quickly turned around after grabbing the food pack and sprinted out of the kitchen.
Devin released a sad smile and sank into his sofa in the living room. Matilda’s behavior affected him, yet he couldn’t confide in anyone. It has been like this for almost a month.
Now, he was thinking about whether or not to involve his father or hers.
As usual, he waited for her to confirm that she had reached school before he left the house, just in case she forgot anything.
She would usually forget things and drive back, but Devin thought it stressful and would take them to her instead.
He stood up, about to go and shower, when a phone began to ring but it wasn’t his. He realized that this time, Matilda left her phone.
Sometimes, it was her purse containing her IDs and, other times, her practical materials.
He decided to take it to her on his way to the office but was curious if it was a call from her colleague trying to pass a message, thereby curiously checking the caller ID.
’Freda Clinic?’ Devin read the caller ID questioningly in his mind. Was Matilda sick like he suspected and was hiding it?
He decided to find out, but the call already ended.
He contemplated whether to call the number again but remembered that medical information was private, and this woman was unlikely to share it.
He was about to track Matilda’s location to ensure she had reached her school when a message dropped on her phone.
’Have you decided yet? The doctor is ready for the D & C, and I can book you if you are ready today. If you aren’t sure, you can think about it for a few days as you are already nine weeks in.’
Devin felt dizzy as he reread the words D&C and the mention of 9 weeks. Then he remembered Matilda had another phone, so this girl could still contact her.
He checked her location and was grossly disappointed to see her driving to the abortion clinic. Grabbing his car key, he exited the house.

Matilda was driving to school, as she was stuck in traffic and was already late for her first lecture.
As she waited in the traffic, she wanted to take a bite of the toast Devin made her when her phone began to ring.
Seeing the name, she stiffened a little before answering the call.
"Freda, did I get the appointment?"
"That is if you are still interested. You weren’t answering my calls and..." She was about to say that she sent her a message, but Matilda already cut her off by saying,
"I am driving, and since I’m caught up in traffic, let’s talk."
"Do you still want to do it?" Freda asked from the end of the line; Matilda responded with certainty,
"Yes." After today, everything would return to normal again.
"Then you should come to the clinic now. The procedure will take ten minutes, and you can rest for an hour before going home."
Matilda understood that she would miss her class for the day and thought of an excuse to give Devin. In the end, she agreed.
"I’m on my way."
"It took thirty minutes for her to arrive at the clinic, and Freda led her to the doctor."
After checking her medical record, the doctor asked earnestly, "Are you sure you want to do this? Your womb isn’t very healthy."
Matilda’s heart sunk into her stomach as she asked, "What do you mean by my womb isn’t healthy?"
The doctor took a deep breath and asked her, "Did you consume excessive alcohol in the past?"
Matilda froze, as she hadn’t told that to anyone. "I was depressed."
"It’s affected you. Since you got this chance, please don’t waste it. I think you should think about it again."
Matilda was unhappy but had already considered the pros and cons. Her bump would soon begin to show, and she would not succeed at hiding it again.
"I already did, and you are wasting time," Matilda looked at her wrist and said, just as she heard Freda’s voice behind the door,
"Sir, you can’t go in."
The door opened anyway, and Devin stood there with a coldness that could freeze the sea. Matilda’s head lowered in shame.
