Chapter 335: Chapter 335 - Are you breaking up with me?
"Then you must find another body to carry it for you," Matilda said indifferently; Devin was shocked.
He never knew this side of her and never saw it coming. Suppressing his anger, he asked her again, hoping she would change her mind.
"Matilda, are you telling me you want to end this pregnancy?"
His way of asking made Matilda slightly guilty, so she explained it clearly.
"It will ruin my future. Already, my taste bud feels abnormal, and I don’t get the same taste I have to get when I mix ingredients. I get tired quickly and sleep a lot. I can’t combine school with pregnancy and am unwilling to differ."
Devin felt she had a point because she always wanted to attend culinary school centered on taste. After all, it was all about food.
However, he was pained that Matilda could not sacrifice just a year to give birth to their child before continuing her education.
The pregnancy was a mistake, but when he caught sight of her ring finger, he felt there might be more.
"Where is your engagement ring?" He asked calmly. She tensed up a little but said truthfully,
"I removed it before going to the hospital."
She didn’t add that she has also been taking it off at school because it makes her feel old. Her colleagues were much younger than her since this was their first degree.
She had already done her first degree and been locked out of the world for two and a half years. She wanted to catch up without feeling old.
Unfortunately for her, Devin’s tricks worked, and he got the truth out of her. It was painful and bitter, but he could not keep on swallowing it.
"Great. Keep it off your finger forever, but you know what? You shall have that child, and when it’s born, you are free to do whatever you like with your body," he stated firmly.
Matilda was not foolish, as she caught the meaning of his words.
"Are you breaking up with me?" She asked sorrowfully, not expecting him to give up on her.
When she told him she wasn’t ready for marriage, he understood and proposed an engagement. When she also told him about her reluctance to have a family, he agreed and was prepared to wait, so how could he back out now?
"You are not the woman I fell in love with, and I will inform your father about my decision," Devin stated firmly. Matilda felt a sharp pain in her chest.
She feared what her father might do if he found out she tried to abort his grandchild. Her father loved her, but he was also very strict.
Devin rose from his chair and was already headed to the door. Matilda panicked and stood up.
"Devin, wait."
He paused, hoping that she would change her mind.
"What?" He asked callously. She walked to him and pleaded,
"You can’t tell my dad."
Devin’s brows raised as he asked,
"Really? Why so? I promised him I would take good care of you, so why shouldn’t he know about the change of plans?"
Matilda bit her lips so hard it drew blood as she pleaded again,
"Devin, please don’t tell my dad."
Devin stared at her emotionlessly,
"Matilda, the only reason why I haven’t sent you back to him right now is because of the child you are carrying. Aside from that, there is nothing between us."
Matilda froze as the reality of her decision, blended with Devin’s words, began to wash over her.
Devin was already at the door, and before Matilda came to her senses, she heard beeping sounds at the door.
"What are you doing?" She exited her trance and asked when she saw him typing some codes but could not get the exact numbers.
"I changed the codes. You won’t run away with my child," he said thoughtfully.
If she didn’t want him, that was fine, but he would not allow an innocent child to die before having the chance at life when he was there to take care of it.
Matilda was getting upset. Devin was forcing her to keep the child, which she feared because she was not ready to sacrifice or differ her education.
"But you can’t do this. My father did it before, and it got me drinking. If you don’t tell me the codes, I will consume all the alcohol in the wine cabinet before your return," she threatened seriously.
Devin was so disappointed and angry with himself for loving her so unquestioningly and never seeing this side of her before.
Still, her threat was not strong enough to change his mind. He walked back to her, and there was just a tiny gap between them.
"I didn’t want to tell you this, but since you are so stubborn, I thought you should be aware that Mara is still alive and you would be a target after the torture your father gave her."
Matilda froze, and her face drained of color at the news. However, she was there and saw everything, so how could it be possible?
No. Devin was trying to scare her. "That is not true."
"Wanna see?" Devin smirked and showed her the video on his phone.
As she watched, the trim color on her face drained as Devin added in a warning tone,
"Since you are good at keeping secrets, you should also know that Robin doesn’t want Sabrina to know about this."
"How long have you known?" Matilda asked, a shiver running down her spine. Devin wanted to comfort her.
To pull her into his embrace and assure her that everything was fine, but that part of him for her died a moment ago. He stood aloof and responded,
"A few days ago, when Robin returned from Paris, so whatever you want to do, you must be very careful."
After saying that, he left her alone in the luxurious penthouse; Matilda sat on the sofa as fear washed over her.
The news about Mara made her so numb that she feared going to school, as she remembered the times she saw Mara at places, usually disguised.
However, she couldn’t continue to live in fear. She would wait for Devin to return and have this discussion once again.
