Chapter 140: 139: The pig in the house is about to reach its farrowing time.

"Bang—"

As the remote control shattered into two pieces, the sound of the game also stopped.

Yu Zhi’s gaze moved from her face to her legs, a trace of malice flashing in her eyes: "Your legs are healed?"

The girl’s cold tone made Yu Xinman recall the day her legs were broken by her.

Her body instinctively trembled, the anger on her face morphing into fear: "You... What are you trying to do?"

"What could I possibly do?"

Seeing the girl leisurely stand up, Yu Xinman frantically pressed the retreat button on the side of her electric wheelchair.

She was truly terrified of the lunatic standing in front of her.

"Little Zhi, stop scaring your sister." Yuan Li caught sight of a few people entering through the door and quickly shielded Yu Xinman, trying to smooth things over.

"I wasn’t planning on scaring her." The girl casually stretched her wrists and, seeing Yu Xinman retreating endlessly, let out a bored sneer.

She hadn’t even made a move yet, and this was already the reaction.

If that was the case, why bother provoking her again and again?

"Ahem." Yu Baisheng’s cough momentarily eased the awkward atmosphere.

He stepped aside, motioning for the two distinguished guests behind him to sit on the sofa.

Once they were seated, he began introducing them to everyone: "This is Mr. Chen Shiguang, and this is his wife, Liu Lan."

Upon hearing the surname Chen, Yu Zhi immediately understood. She reclined comfortably on the sofa, arms crossed, openly sizing them up.

Opposite her, Chen Shiguang sported neatly combed-back hair, a gray suit, and a black pocket square, projecting an air of scholarly elegance.

Next to him, Liu Lan wore a deep red cape over a black dress. The embroidery on the hem matched Mr. Chen’s pocket square.

"This must be Little Zhi?" Liu Lan met the girl’s scrutinizing gaze with a gentle smile.

Her demeanor was impeccable, suggesting she had likely grown up in a cultured family.

However, the forced smile on her face was no different from the facade Yuan Li usually displayed.

Yu Zhi nodded slightly; she had initially thought Liu Lan might be genuine. But her first smile and words had swiftly shattered that assumption.

"Shiguang, she’s so beautiful." Liu Lan looped her arm around her husband’s, her eyes brimming with joy. "She really does suit Zai Zai very well."

Only now did Chen Shiguang direct his gaze at the girl. He curled his lip into a faint smile and spoke warmly, "Yes, she’s quite suitable."

The two of them seemed to observe the girl as if selecting merchandise in a shop, commenting on her appearance.

Though their words were pleasant, it was evident from their tone that they didn’t truly regard her.

Beside them, Yu Baisheng, relieved that the girl hadn’t shown any signs of resistance throughout, exhaled deeply.

He engaged in brief conversation with Yuan Li and the couple before deciding to give them some privacy: "Mr. Chen, Mrs. Chen, I’ll just head upstairs to fetch something. You can chat with Little Zhi in the meantime."

"Alright." Chen Shiguang cast him an approving look, evidently pleased with his considerate arrangement.

After all, he could tell that Liu Lan had long wanted to have a proper conversation with Little Zhi, but had refrained due to the number of people present.

Yu Baisheng, ever perceptive, called the mother-and-daughter pair intent on watching the scene to follow him upstairs, fearing they might disrupt the conversation.

The hall was soon enveloped in silence, with only the three individuals sitting opposite each other, not even a shadow of a servant in sight.

After a brief silence, Liu Lan tentatively broke it: "Little Zhi, I heard you’ve been living in the countryside?"

She leaned against Chen Shiguang’s shoulder, embodying the image of a demure woman.

"Mm."

"So, what do you usually do in the countryside?"

"Raise pigs, plow fields."

"Raise...raise what?" Liu Lan momentarily failed to register the words, having never encountered such a crude subject in her life.

Yu Zhi repeated herself, this time elaborating with a straight face: "Usually, I start my mornings by leading the cattle to plow the fields. Then I go deep into the mountains to find medicinal herbs and hunt. In the evening, I visit the pigsty."

Liu Lan: "..."

She awkwardly tugged at the corners of her mouth, her gaze faintly betraying a trace of disdain.

But remembering Zai Zai’s circumstances at home, she mustered her courage to press further: "Don’t you attend school?"

"I don’t have time," Yu Zhi shook her head, sighing in frustration. "The pigs at home are nearing their birthing season in a few days. I need to go back and take care of them."

Liu Lan was truly at a loss this time. She covertly tugged on her husband’s sleeve, giving him a signal.

Understanding, Chen Shiguang cleared his throat and addressed her again in his usual warm tone: "Little Zhi, let’s leave the past behind. I hope that once you marry my son, you can let go of everything from the countryside."

The Chen Family, after all, carried substantial weight in the upper echelons of Imperial City society. He didn’t want the mere mention of the Chen name to evoke thoughts of a pig-raising daughter-in-law.

Though raising pigs was hardly shameful, it nonetheless tarnished their reputation.

"Let go? How?" Yu Zhi feigned confusion, sitting up straight, her light coffee-colored eyes filled with bewilderment.

"I mean you sell all the pigs and cows you’ve raised," Chen Shiguang paused for a moment, almost kindly suggesting, "If you can’t handle it, I can arrange for someone to help you."

"No!" The girl suddenly stood up, visibly distressed, her fingers clenched tightly against her clothes. "Those pigs have been with me for so long; we have a bond."

"But—"

"Enough!" The girl cast a disappointed look at the couple, grabbed her backpack, and said, "I didn’t expect Mr. Chen to be this kind of person."

"Given that, I’ll take my leave for now." Without giving them a chance to hold her back, she briskly walked out, the picture of heartbreak.

"Chen Shiguang!" Watching the girl take off, Liu Lan snapped angrily at her husband, chastising, "What kind of conversation was that? Didn’t I already tell you at home?"

There were plenty of important questions yet to be asked. Starting with selling the pigs and cows? That was obviously going to scare her away!

"Lan’er, this... How was I supposed to know her reaction would be so extreme?" Chen Shiguang frowned deeply, the unexpected turn of events catching him off guard.

"Isn’t it the same principle as raising cats and dogs? Who would sell animals they’ve cared for years?"

"So, you mean just leave things as they are?"

"No." Liu Lan grumpily gulped down water, calming herself a little.

She stared into Chen Shiguang’s eyes and whispered, "For now, don’t be so strict or controlling. Once she’s through the door, we’ll call the shots anyway."

"True. I’ll have another private talk with her in a couple of days." After all, once she joined the Chen Family, her pigs and cows wouldn’t be staying.
