Chapter 141: 140: Yuan Li Attacked, Meeting Arranged

Liu Lan glared at him and picked up her handbag from beside her. "What are you standing there for? Still planning to stay for dinner?"

She looked down on the Yu Family. If it weren’t for wanting to see her daughter-in-law, she wouldn’t have stepped foot in this place even for a second.

But now that the daughter-in-law was gone, there was no reason to stay any longer.

Chen Shiguang quickly stood up, wrapped his arm around her shoulder, and began coaxing her. "Lan’er, don’t be mad."

"You should think about how to explain this to Zai Zai." Liu Lan brushed off his hand and tottered out of the Yu Family on her high heels.

Second-floor study.

Baisong sat by the coffee table, propping one hand on his knee, pouring himself a cup of tea with the other.

His overly relaxed posture stood in stark contrast to the restless Yuan Li.

"Baisong, aren’t you worried that Little Zhi might say something?" She turned her head, eyes shadowed with anxiety.

Baisong took a small sip of tea, his tone absolutely assured. "She won’t. She wouldn’t dare."

Throwing tantrums at home was one thing, but now she was facing the Chen Family. Even if she had the intention to rebel, she’d have to weigh her options first.

"She even slapped Xinman—what wouldn’t she dare to do?" Yuan Li rolled her eyes discreetly.

Her sarcastic tone made Baisong’s expression sour. He glanced at the increasingly sharp-tongued woman and slammed the teacup on the coffee table. "How much longer are you going to harp on about this?"

Ever since she returned home, there had been no peace. If it wasn’t an argument, it was on the verge of becoming one.

She always managed to find something to nitpick, leaving Baisong’s ears almost calloused from the noise.

"I’m not allowed to say anything now? Isn’t Xinman your daughter?" Yuan Li pointed her slender finger at his shoulder, visibly agitated. "Just because Yu Zhi is now associating with the Chen Family, we all have to bow to her whims?"

"Yuan Li!"

Baisong swatted her hand away, pointing a finger at her nose as he stood up. "Look at you right now—what’s the difference between you and a shrew?"

At those words, the study fell abruptly silent.

Yuan Li’s hand, which had been suspended midair, dropped powerlessly. She looked blankly at the man in front of her, whose mask seemed to have finally been ripped off. Suddenly, she laughed.

"A shrew? Ha." She was trembling with rage, the gentle demeanor she once maintained completely shattered, as she swept the tea set off the coffee table in a rage.

The sharp sound of the pieces shattering hit everyone’s ears. Baisong’s eyes widened as he stared in disbelief at the broken shards on the floor.

"Are you out of your mind?!" Baisong crouched down, picking up the fragments. His anger was so intense that his eyes began to redden.

"Now you care? Why don’t I go downstairs and smash that set of teaware too, so you can see what—" Really looks like a shrew.

"Slap—"

A resounding slap landed on her cheek. Yuan Li turned her head to the side, leaning against the armrest, her disheveled hair obscuring her stunned expression.

A searing pain spread across her face, but it was as if she felt nothing. She stared blankly at the carpet, numbed.

"Dad!" Yu Xinman hurried to their side, tears welling up in her eyes in an instant.

She grabbed Yuan Li’s thin wrist, her gaze towards Baisong tinged with a trace of resentment. "No matter what, you shouldn’t have laid hands on Mom!"

This statement prompted Baisong to snap out of his earlier fit of anger.

Since Yuan Li married into the Yu Family, the two of them had never had any major conflicts. At most, they’d exchange some arguments, but things had never escalated into physical violence.

His expression shifted complexly as he looked at the silent Yuan Li. He opened his mouth and mouthed a couple of words, but in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to apologize.

"I’ll go take a look downstairs." Baisong placed his hands behind his back and quickly left the study.

When he reached the spiral staircase, he paused for a few seconds to tidy his clothes and replaced his expression with a smile.

But when he saw that the hall was empty, his smile gradually stiffened.

He anxiously summoned Uncle Fang for a detailed inquiry but got nowhere. After some deliberation, he had no choice but to lower himself and call Chen Shiguang.

"Mr. Chen, the kitchen is ready. When will you be coming back?"

He spoke casually, pretending to think they might still be nearby.

"President Yu, sorry, but something came up at home, so we’ve already left," answered Liu Lan, still as polite as ever.

There was no anger or displeasure in her tone.

Baisong finally let out a sigh of relief. He exchanged a few pleasantries and deliberately mentioned, "Little Zhi should’ve let me know."

As a fellow businessperson, Liu Lan wasn’t oblivious to the hidden meaning in his words. She generously praised Yu Zhi. "I quite like Little Zhi. In a couple of days, I’ll bring Zai Zai to meet her."

"Good, good, I’ll make the arrangements," Baisong replied, his smiling demeanor restored.

The earlier unhappiness upstairs was quickly replaced by this moment of joy.

Yu Xinman listened to the hearty laughter echoing in the hall, her gaze deep and murky like a bottomless stream.

She lowered her head and pressed the forward button beside her hand. As the wheelchair moved back into the study, she tightly gripped the door handle and slammed it shut.

The hazy night draped over the city like layers of delicate veils, gently wrapping it.

Moonlight spilled into the second-floor guest room, casting shimmering patterns on the mannequin by the window.

A young girl dressed in loungewear held a soft measuring tape, running it across a piece of pitch-black fabric.

Her head was slightly lowered, and the stray strands of hair by her temples slid down to partly obscure her luminous porcelain skin, brushing tenderly against her cheek.

"Knock, knock, knock—"

The rapping sound at the door interrupted her movements. She lifted her gaze towards the entrance, her crystal-clear almond eyes like they were submerged in the depths of the ocean.

Yu Zhi glanced at the items on the table, her hand clutching the measuring tape tightening slightly. "What is it?"

"Zhizhi, did you lock the door?" Shi Wei stood facing the firmly shut door, the air around him as biting as the dead of winter.

Even though he was aware that the young girl had many secrets, being shut out in that instant couldn’t stop his heart from tightening painfully.

Yu Zhi pondered for a moment, and just when he thought the door wouldn’t open for him, warm yellow light spilled from within.

"What are you standing there for?" The girl took the ginger tea from his hands, grabbed his hand, and pulled him into the room.

Shi Wei’s gaze lingered momentarily on the fabrics on the desk before shifting to the mannequin near the window.

On the mannequin was a starry blue spaghetti-strap dress with a gradient of dark and light tones. The waist and chest were adorned with crystals.

Every time a breeze wafted in from the window, the dress shimmered with dazzling light, as if it carried the entire galaxy within it.
