Chapter 139: 138: Could it be that you want to marry him on her behalf?
She instinctively raised her left hand to rub her eyes, completely forgetting that the syringe was still lodged in her skin.
"Zhizhi, don’t move around." Shi Wei swiftly grabbed her hand, which had already started bleeding, and cautiously lowered it bit by bit.
Once the thin tube filled with liquid covered the blood, he teasingly brushed the tip of the little girl’s nose and asked, "Does it hurt?"
"No, it doesn’t." Yu Zhi blinked twice, though she still felt a bit itchy. Tugging at his sleeve, she said, "It feels like there’s something in my eye."
"Let me take a look." The man leaned closer to her face. Even as he examined her eye, he didn’t forget to secure a little moment of intimacy.
The scene of their kiss unapologetically landed in Lu Li’s line of vision. He quickly turned his gaze away, his hands hanging at his sides clenching into fists.
The veins on the backs of his hands bulged as he wrestled with his emotions. Unable to contain himself, he finally stood up and walked out of the infirmary with his head lowered.
Ji Jingchen observed every reaction from Lu Li, silently confirming his earlier suspicions.
He sighed and followed behind him, standing beside him in the hallway.
The crisp breeze of late October was far from gentle. Each gust carried a biting chill.
Lu Li allowed the wind to sneak through his rolled-up sleeves. Even as the cold engulfed him fully, he didn’t feel the chill.
After all, his heart, buried deep in a frozen wasteland, had long since lost all sensation.
"You really like her?" Ji Jingchen leaned against the railing, his gaze fixed on the distant sports field.
His tone was casual as though engaging in friendly chatter.
Lu Li hesitated for a moment, clearing his mind of messy thoughts before replying softly, "Mm."
"You hesitated." Ji Jingchen smirked, turning to scrutinize the boy whose eyes were now dull and lifeless, as though trying to penetrate through his defenses.
"I didn’t." Lu Li lowered his gaze, his eyelashes fluttering faintly with a trace of sorrow. "It’s her who doesn’t like me."
Ji Jingchen parted his lips to speak, yet chose not to say the words, "You don’t like her as much as you think you do."
Instead, he turned around and tilted his chin faintly toward the direction of the infirmary. "Do you know why Yu Zhi chose the person inside?"
Lu Li tried recollecting their interactions but eventually shook his head. "I don’t know."
This response didn’t surprise Ji Jingchen.
He patted Lu Li’s shoulder and earnestly said, "When you learn to truly feel with your heart, you’ll come to realize that some things—some love—are beyond your ability to give."
Setting aside Mr. Shi’s background and status, just within the scope of how he treats Yu Zhi—his unwavering devotion and the sense of security he provides are more than enough for her.
And for someone like Lu Li, who hesitates even to admit his feelings, how could he possibly achieve that?
The wind continued to blow. The silent boy who had been reflecting on his thoughts didn’t retort this time.
Lu Li brushed off the hand on his shoulder, took heavy steps, and turned to leave.

Yu Family.
The sound of lawnmowers hummed faintly from outside the courtyard. Soon, a few attendants entered the hall carrying floral arrangements, systematically beginning the setup.
Yu Xinman furrowed her brows slightly, casting a dissatisfied glance at them. She pressed the forward button on her electric wheelchair, slowly moving to the sofa.
"Mom, did you call her?" She picked up her coffee cup and took a small sip, maintaining an air of elegance even whilst seated in the wheelchair.
Yuan Li, having spent some time in the police station, seemed notably thinner now. Her cheeks were slightly sunken, and her figure lacked its former fullness.
Still, with jewelry and accessories adorning her, she managed to preserve a semblance of a wealthy matron’s image.
"Mm, she’ll come by after school." Yuan Li glanced at the wall clock without much emotion on her face.
She picked up her phone and sent a message to Yu Baisheng, asking when they’d return before refocusing her attention on Yu Xinman.
Looking her up and down, Yuan Li spotted her pink princess dress and revealed an unmistakable hint of disapproval in her expression. "Go change your clothes. And take off your makeup."
"Why?" Yu Xinman froze momentarily with her coffee cup, her tone betraying confusion.
"The Chen Family is coming over to propose. Why are you dressed so beautifully? What—do you intend to marry on her behalf?" Whether it was due to recent frustrations, Yuan Li’s tone carried undeniable impatience.
This remark immediately left Yu Xinman at a loss for words. Truthfully, she had merely wanted to outshine her rival in front of outsiders; she hadn’t considered the deeper implications.
Watching her panic as she called upon two attendants to carry her upstairs, Yuan Li leaned back on the sofa, rubbing her temple in exhaustion as she sighed long and heavily.
At six o’clock sharp, Yu Zhi appeared at the Yu Family’s villa entrance. Her gaze swept over the courtyard, which had clearly been tidied up thoroughly, and her eyebrows raised slightly in faint surprise.
"Miss Yu, you’ve returned." Uncle Fang approached her from the other side, radiating the same eerily cold aura as always.
Yu Zhi cast him a deep look, then walked past him without stopping, entering the hall.
She sat casually across from the mother and daughter duo, crossing her legs lazily. "What’s the matter?"
Yu Xinman could barely tolerate her aloof demeanor, burning to hurl sharp words at her.
But just as she was about to speak, her forearm was sharply pinched by the person beside her.
Yuan Li shot her a warning glare before turning to Yu Zhi with a smile plastered onto her face. "Little Zhi, it’s been such a long time since I’ve seen you. How have you been lately?"
"Do you want me to be well or unwell?" Yu Zhi’s lips curled faintly, her gaze locking onto Yuan Li’s, her amber eyes gradually darkening.
"As an elder, naturally, I hope for you to be well." Yuan Li faltered under her piercing stare, her smile becoming visibly forced.
"Cut the pretense. Get to the point." Yu Zhi had no intention of playing along with their charade.
This household was practically made up of actors, and yet their performances were mediocre at best, making them downright exhausting to watch.
"It’s nothing major, really. We just wanted to invite you back for a meal."
"Just a meal?"
"Yes. Your dad’s been talking about you a lot lately. He should be back shortly."
Yuan Li, afraid the girl might leave suddenly, invoked Yu Baisheng’s name to dispel her qualms.
"Alright." Yu Zhi responded impassively, though internally curious to see what kind of schemes they were brewing this time.
She pulled out her phone and opened a mobile game, cranking up the volume to its maximum to avoid any further conversation.
The hall was filled entirely with the sound of bubbles bursting and repeated exclamations of "crazy."
The noise grated heavily on the mother and daughter duo; Yu Xinman, in particular, was far less tolerant than Yuan Li. When Yu Zhi moved on to the next level, she reached for the remote control next to her, angrily slamming it onto the floor with force.
"Yu Zhi, aren’t you being too much?" She furiously shouted, her anger palpable.
