The Nightmare Wizard -
Chapter 120: Problems
Chapter 120: Chapter 120: Problems
The day passed quickly in the library. William finally finished copying all the spells from the first floor, spending over 200,000 Black Rock points. Unfortunately for him, merely knowing them wasn’t enough; he had to practice them, but he had left that part for when he was in the other world, even though they still hadn’t found a solution to emptying his gray energy without attracting attention to return quickly.
On their way to class with Lia, the school looked exceptionally lively, unlike the previous days. They walked in silence through the Black Rock corridors until they reached the Meditation and Mana Control class. This subject, though considered fundamental, was known for its harshness. It taught techniques to mold and control the flow of internal mana, as well as its channeling through magical circuits. The class was held in a circular room, without desks, with meditation circles engraved on the floor. In this place, no one was allowed to sit, and the teacher was widely known for deeply despising normal people. Some say a commoner stole her fiancé, though no one dares to ask her directly.
The instructor was already waiting for them. She was a middle-aged woman with a cold gaze and hair pulled back in a bun as tight as her face. She wore a combat suit rather than a robe, and her name resonated like a sentence among the students: Professor Dreya Vollenhart.
"You’re late," she said without raising her voice, but with a blood-chilling tone.
"Teacher, there are still 15 minutes until the start of your..." William tried to say.
"In my class, arriving less than 30 minutes early means disrespecting me. It means you don’t respect me. If you don’t respect your teacher, how do you expect to progress, you damned commoners? You never learn manners, just a bunch of wasted resources." The teacher slowly vociferated curses as if whispering, but with enough volume for everyone in the room to hear her.
"Thank these commoners for the surprise test. One by one, you must show me a spell. Speed, damage, and the ability to recreate it will be evaluated. Whatever spell you show me, you must repeat it non-stop 10 times. Is that understood?!"
Everyone in the room nodded, but Lia just cowered, trying to hide behind William to avoid becoming the teacher’s target.
Murmurs quickly arose but died down as soon as Dreya raised an eyebrow.
"I will repeat the instructions in case any commoner didn’t understand the rules. Each of you will go to the center of the classroom. You will have to cast ten basic elemental spells against the floating targets. I will evaluate casting time, impact, and accuracy. Only level one spells are allowed, and no auxiliary artifacts are permitted. If anyone tries to be clever, I will make them repeat from scratch."
The first to approach was a noble from House Selmar. She wore embroidered gloves and an air of superiority.
"Fireball!" she exclaimed with a grand and exaggerated hand gesture as if she were an orchestra conductor.
Only three of her spells hit. One went astray, and another exploded before reaching its target. Dreya merely sighed.
"Too much makeup, too little magic."
The noble returned to her seat, indignant, but her friends laughed as if nothing had happened. For them, it wasn’t a real evaluation; it was just a fun game to show off.
Then came a clumsy boy, Rendol, who barely raised his hand before his spell went out of control and exploded in his hand.
"Watch out, idiot!" one shouted.
"He shot himself!" another laughed.
A group of nobles from House Vaylen openly laughed, betting on who would fail next. One of them even shouted:
"I bet three points he doesn’t even make it halfway!"
Teacher Dreya did not stop the taunts. She smiled slightly. She enjoyed seeing them fail more than seeing them excel.
Another young man cast spells quickly but with so little energy that one bounced off the target without leaving a mark.
"Was that a spell or a caress?" someone murmured.
"Didn’t your mom give you milk when you were a baby?" another said, and the group burst into laughter.
Meanwhile, some did stand out. Elric, agile and confident, cast ten fireballs in a row, each in three seconds. His precision was admirable.
"Very good," Dreya said. "Though predictable. Change your repertoire, or you’ll die against the first water elemental you encounter."
The laughter now mixed with tension. Several feared being the next target of ridicule. A pale-faced boy missed seven spells and fell to his knees from exhaustion.
"Do you need a bed or a coffin?" a noble whispered as she passed him.
And then, the atmosphere changed.
"William, your turn," Dreya commanded.
"Enough," Dreya said as she finished noting on her chart. "Next... William."
"Ready to prove your arrogance with deeds?" one of the nobles asked with a laugh.
William stepped forward indifferently, with no need to warm up or meditate. He stood with his hands in his pockets and simply exhaled.
"Ready?" Dreya asked with a mocking tone.
William did not answer. He just raised an eyebrow and took his hand out of his pocket. Then, in a blink, ten different spells shot out almost simultaneously in a controlled burst; each spell only took 0.2 seconds. Fireball, water spear, earth sting, wind blade, electric spark, smoke shield, piercing ice, vines, light arrow, and a simple sound spell. All hit the ten floating targets in the air with impressive precision. Some even shattered them, even though he hadn’t practiced the spells; his memory alone was enough to execute them perfectly.
The silence was total.
"What... was that?" a student asked in a low voice.
Dreya frowned, unsure how to grade that performance. Finally, she gritted her teeth.
"I suppose... it’s valid. Although casting many at once isn’t always useful in real combat."
William smirked as he returned to his seat before making a sarcastic comment.
"Depends on who the enemy is."
The teacher clearly heard the mockery in his words but simply ignored it. Meanwhile, it was Lia’s turn.
