Chapter 119: Chapter 119 (2) — The First Legendary Mage J. Thompson
Despite everything he had been through, he didn’t give up. He waged a personal war, hunting every beast he encountered, dedicating his life to exterminating every living beast in his path and deciphering spells to strengthen himself. During his journey, he united the remnants of humanity to fight by his side, reclaiming territories taken by the beasts. Throughout his journey, he witnessed firsthand the destruction the beasts had wrought, which strengthened his resolve to eradicate them.
There was no truce in his attacks. He traveled across the entire southern continent until there wasn’t a single magical beast left. After this, he finally reached the same level as Akeron at his peak.
He was the second to reach the mythic level... He founded universities, magic institutes, and power structures to ensure humanity would never fall again. Unlike Akeron, he did not create an Empire, and since his family had died, almost all books claim he never remarried or had children, so his descendants could not be used for political ends.
Teaching the survivors, he created the most powerful army in history. J. Thompson left the horrors of war and focused on studying magic more and more. His army and ministers governed the Empire, making it prosper. Even without J. Thompson on the battlefield, his General Orven Kaldrass shone with his great combat prowess, becoming the third mage capable of reaching the calamity level.
No one knows exactly how he managed to train his army, but by the end of the world’s reconquest, there were more than 10,000 mages of Mythic Level, making it humanity’s second golden age. And unlike Akeron, who hunted like a predator, wanting to consume beasts to strengthen himself, J. Thompson and his men launched an extermination campaign. The slightest rumor was enough for thousands of mythic-level mages to launch themselves to exterminate any sighting of a magical beast.
The repression was total; there was no mercy. Many people condemn what J. Thompson did, and others applaud his actions, as he did them entirely for humanity.
There was a brief silence. So much information made William and Lia’s heads ache, but the professor’s voice was so captivating that, despite many hours having passed, they didn’t feel tired in the slightest.
"But that wasn’t what made him so renowned and respected to this day."
The room filled with tension. Was everything she had told them not enough to make everyone remember him as a hero?
"All those achievements make him worthy of the title of the greatest ruler in history, a wise emperor, even the precursor of all magic, but J. Thompson holds an even more important title. During his reign, we were invaded. An unknown race crossed the boundaries of the universe and arrived in our world. Not even J. Thompson’s entire army, at the peak of its power, could stop them; the amount of blood spilled far exceeded all previous wars."
"The invaders feared no death and advanced like a gigantic tide, destroying everything in their path. His army slowly fell. At that time, humanity had had enough time to strengthen itself, and yet the calamity and mythic level mages were the first to be annihilated. During those battles, J. Thompson was gravely wounded. Many left him for dead... despite this, his army did not retreat from the front lines as expected, but fought with even more energy as if their leader’s wound had never happened."
"During the combat, more and more mages died; some even fled only to be captured by Thompson’s loyal mages themselves, who unhesitatingly executed them in front of everyone as a warning of what would happen if any of them tried to flee again."
"The curses directed at J. Thompson were constant; every day the rest of the army lamented the situation, while his loyal officers never doubted for a moment that he would return."
"And so he did. J. Thompson returned, and not only did he return: he did so with a power no one could comprehend."
"He reached another level...?" William said, unable to contain himself.
"Correct," the professor whispered solemnly. "J. Thompson reached Level 9. He became the first legendary mage. He crushed the invaders, restored order... and ruled for over five million years."
Neither Lia nor William could utter a single word.
"The first emperor was remembered as the father of magic. But J. Thompson... was the first god of humanity. During his reign, it can be said that he defended against invasions from enemy worlds again and again. As much as he tried to understand what was happening, he could never stop it until a solution occurred to him. Using the rest of his lifespan and all the planet’s resources, he created a seal that remains around our planet to this day. Enemies stopped being able to invade us, and we found a way to invade them, but that’s a story for another day."
"Everything I’ve told you has a very specific purpose: history helps us define what our ancestors did and how they fared. If they made some questionable decisions, we must learn from them to make better decisions. Throughout history, there have been many people like them, but they didn’t manage to make their names endure to this day."
"Out there are many historical vestiges that are still being studied. By the way, I forgot to introduce myself: I am Selene Arkwright, a member of the Union of Archaeologists in search of truth and Professor Alkan’s wife. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to come and ask me. You’re doing an excellent job; keep it up, and you’ll go very far."
The class ended without either of them realizing it. What they had just heard... reconfigured their entire understanding of the world.
As they left the classroom, they both walked toward the cafeteria, thinking distractedly. "I didn’t expect to learn everything the teacher told us, but I’m grateful because it motivates me even more. Let’s go to the library; we need to hurry to reach a higher level. I can’t believe how small we are." Lia nodded, also distracted by everything they had heard.
