Chapter 309: CPR
Chapter 309: Chapter 309: CPR
Colors drained from Long Yifan’s face as he heard the sickly sweet voice.
Gu Aihan...
With a pale face, Long Yifan turned to Gu Aihan who was standing at some distance with a concerned look on her face. If looks could kill, Gu Aihan would be six feet under the surface.
Just a few minutes ago, Gu Aihan had the ability to drag him to the shore, after all she knew about his phobia, but she ruthlessly turned around and left.
If it weren’t for Gu Jin...he might truly have died.
But one thing that pleased him was...now everyone knew what type of person Gu Aihan was.
What would the students think of a couple, where the woman ruthlessly abandons her fiance and lets another woman save her fiance?
Now Gu Aihan’s carefully crafted image will fall apart.
Sure enough the next second the students started to whisper among themselves.
"Isn’t that Gu Aihan? Why didn’t she save him?" someone whispered.
"She’s his fiancée, isn’t she? How could she just leave him to drown?"
"What a heartless woman! And after all her preaching about loyalty and love, too!"
Gu Aihan’s face paled as the students’ whispers grew into audible comments.
A girl with short hair scoffed, loud enough for everyone to hear,
"Guess the perfect goddess Gu Aihan isn’t so perfect after all. Ran away when her fiancé needed her most."
"Yeah, and here we thought she was all about compassion and honor," another student chimed in, shaking her head.
"Looks like she was more interested in saving her own reputation than saving her man," someone else added with a mocking laugh.
Meanwhile, Gu Jin slowly rose to her feet, still panting from her life-saving efforts.
She glanced at Gu Aihan, her eyes cold and unyielding as if daring her to deny the unspoken accusations.
Long Yifan, still gasping for breath, turned his gaze toward Gu Aihan. The bitterness in his eyes was unmistakable.
"You... left me," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper, yet it struck like a hammer in the quiet aftermath.
The crowd erupted into a chorus of gasps and murmurs.
"He really said it! She left him!"
"Wow, imagine being abandoned by your own fiancée. That’s brutal."
The tide of public opinion was shifting swiftly, and Gu Aihan was visibly struggling to keep her composure.
Trying to salvage what was left of her dignity, Gu Aihan forced a smile, her voice saccharine-sweet.
"Yifan, darling, you must have misunderstood. It was me who asked to save you. After all, why would Miss Gu Jin who didn’t love you anymore try to save you? Right, Miss Gu Jin?"
Gu Jin gritted her teeth.
Gu Aihan selected her words very carefully. If she agreed, Gu Aihan would be free of all the accusations, if she didn’t Gu Aihan would ask as to why Gu Jin tried to save Long Yifan when she(Gu Jin) doesn’t love Long Yifan anymore.
Long Yifan’s eyes sparkled with killing intent.
He had seen despicable people, but never someone as despicable as Gu Aihan.
How he wished...he could kill her.
If only...if only she wasn’t the Gu Family’s daughter.
Gu Aihan felt smug when she saw the look of struggle on Gu Jin’s face.
Heh! Let’s see how you will save yourself now!
However, Gu Jin who still had a look of struggle on her face suddenly showed a defeated expression and said,
"Gu Aihan, it’s fascinating how quick you are to spin a tale. But let’s set the record straight, shall we?"
Turning to face the onlookers, Gu Jin raised her voice just enough for everyone to hear clearly.
"I didn’t save Long Yifan because of some lingering affection," she declared, her eyes flickering with a hint of disdain as they landed on her ex-fiancé.
"I did it because, unlike some people, I don’t stand by and watch others suffer, even if they don’t mean anything to me anymore. And no you didn’t tell me to save him."
Gu Aihan’s smile wavered, a crack appearing in her confident façade.
"Is it? Are you sure..."
"I am damn sure." Gu Jin interrupted her. "There must be someone who had seen how Miss Gu Aihan ran away, right?"
One of the young men wearing a red hoodie suddenly raised his hand and said,
"I have seen her leaving she was right in front of me and I can say with guarantee that she didn’t meet Miss Gu Jin at all."
The red hoodie young man’s words were like a resounding slap on Gu Aihan’s face.
Gu Aihan’s face turned pale and she hurriedly interrupted,
"Is that so? Oh! Maybe I forgot! Please don’t mind me. I was just concerned about my fiance and it messed up my memory."
"But if you’re so concerned about him," Gu Jin continued, her eyes narrowing, "then why didn’t you step in yourself? Or did you just forget about it in your rush to save your own skin?"
Gu Aihan’s face turned ashen, clearly taken aback by Gu Jin’s ruthless counterattack.
"No... I... I was just trying to get help!" she stammered, her voice losing its usual smoothness. "I thought it was more important to find someone capable of saving him."
The crowd wasn’t buying it.
"Yeah, right. She ran off so fast; I doubt she was looking for help," someone muttered.
"She’s just trying to cover her tracks now," another chimed in with a scoff.
The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife, and it was clear that Gu Aihan’s once flawless reputation was rapidly crumbling before her eyes.
Seeing her on the ropes, Gu Jin pressed her advantage.
"You know, Miss Gu Aihan," she said, her tone deceptively casual, "if you were so concerned about finding help, you should’ve stayed and called out for assistance. Funny how no one heard you shouting for help, though. Isn’t that strange?"
Gu Aihan’s lips trembled as she struggled to come up with a retort.
Her eyes darted around, looking for support among the crowd, but all she received were cold, judgmental stares.
The students who once admired her were now turning against her, their faith shattered by the ugly reality exposed before them.
Gu Aihan suddenly turned to Long Yifan and hugged him.
Gu Jin raised an eyebrow and waited for Long Yifan to push Gu Aihan away.
Which blind man would continue to pamper a woman who would abandon them when they are on the verge of death?
But then she saw Long Yifan’s pupil dilating her heart skipped a beat.
’A person’s pupil dilates when they are looking in the eyes of their loved ones or their heart is beating fastly.’
Her mind already had an answer but Gu Jin refused to accept it. Her foolish heart thought that once Long Yifan saw Gu Aihan’s true face he would leave her and stop loving her...but now...
On the other hand, Gu Aihan was whispering in Long Yifan’s ears,
"You remember your mother’s promise right? She wouldn’t love it if her future daughter-in-law lost her good reputation, right? You don’t want to disappoint her mother, right?
Be a good dog and say that I indeed tried to save you but it was you who asked me to leave."
Long Yifan’s pupil dilated once Gu Aihan mentioned his mother.
His teeth clenched so hard it was a wonder they didn’t crack.
For a moment, it seemed like he might defy her, that he might tell the truth despite the consequences.
But then, as if resigning himself to his fate, he slowly turned to face the crowd.
Taking a deep breath, Long Yifan forced himself to speak, his voice shaky but loud enough for everyone to hear.
"I... I asked Gu Aihan to leave and find help. She... she didn’t abandon me. I was the one who told her to go."
A wave of gasps swept through the crowd as shocked whispers erupted among the students.
"What?! But we all saw her run away!"
"Does he seriously expect us to believe that?"
"Something’s fishy here. He’s clearly lying to protect her."
But there were some who hesitated, their faith in Gu Aihan’s previous reputation making them doubt what they had just witnessed.
"Maybe he’s telling the truth... I mean, he’s the victim here, right?"
"Yeah, but why would he ask her to leave if he was drowning? That makes no sense!"
Gu Jin stood there, her eyes never leaving Long Yifan’s face, searching for a hint of the man she once loved, the man she believed would stand up for what was right.
However, she was disappointed by his words.
Her heart clenched painfully, the last flicker of hope she held onto slowly dying as she watched him.
She had saved him, risking her life, believing that he might finally see Gu Aihan for who she truly was.
Instead, he had chosen to lie for her, to protect her, leaving Gu Jin standing alone amidst the storm of accusations and lies.
