Chapter 399: If everything is a lie, what’s the truth?
"I hope I don’t need to tell you what has brought me here," The demon lord, Lord Ahriman, said to Nathaniel.
He clicked his fingers and formed a throne seat on the mountains, a throne that was raging the hellfire before sitting in front of Nathaniel like the ultimate power.
The dean who had gone to drop off Elliana, returned and looked at the demon lord.
Nathaniel was about to speak when he felt the presence of another witch around him and he looked to his side, his gaze meeting Pluto, who was leaning on a random tree as if standing in a garden.
"Well, don’t mind me. Carry on. I am just here to watch how my friend handles things with lords of different species," Pluto smirked casually, his hard gaze meeting with the demon lord, who scoffed.
He wasn’t a fool to not understand what was going on here. These two, though acting nonchalant, were standing alert in their places, ready to attack him if he tried to harm this mixed-breed prince.
The demon lord looked at Nathaniel, waiting for his answers, who looked back at him with a stern gaze.
"I am unsure of what you are trying to ask here. And please refrain from asking about that girl. She isn’t someone you can afford to mess with. The entire witch’s kingdom has their eyes on her," Nathaniel said, trying to ensure that the demon lord understood he couldn’t threaten him with taking away that girl.
Lord Ahriman looked into Nathaniel’s eyes, a scoff finally leaving his mouth.
"And you guys think you can protect her from me if I really want that girl to be in hell?" Lord Ahriman asked, tilting his head.
Pluto -"..."
The dean - "..."
Nathaniel stood there pursing his lips into a thin line. He wanted to argue back, but he didn’t want to do anything that would get Elliana into trouble at the same time.
"Just get to the point," Nathaniel clenched his teeth.
"You know what I am here for Prince Nathaniel. Let’s cut to the chase and get straight to the point, yeah? How is that girl related to Taipan?" Lord Ahriman asked.
"You can stop calling my father Taipan," Nathaniel murmured, and Ahriman scoffed.
"Well, it’s still better than being called a sperm whale that your father used to call me for my hunter abilities and how everyone used to rush away as soon as I used to show up anywhere," the demon lord said.
Nathaniel sighed. He didn’t want to waste time arguing uselessly.
"I don’t think any witch’s relation to your so-called Taipan should concern a demon lord like you. She is a dark witch of the same clan as my father, who was the king of the dark witches. Maybe that’s why you feel their powers are similar," Nathaniel tried to bury the matter.
Lord Ahriman chuckled, a very dark and sinister chuckle as he raised his gaze and looked straight into Nathaniel’s eyes, letting him see the hellfire that made the prince square his jaws as sweat beads appeared on his forehead.
"Do you think I am a fool? That girl clearly had the powers of Taipan. No other witch has ever been able to share my powers like Taipan did. And she is the only one after all these years who have come back and reminded me of him.
Do you know why I think they are related? Because I was the one who allowed Taipan’s powers to share my hell fire," Lord Ahriman said, and Nathaniel sighed.
"Well, your powers died when my father died. His fathers went away with him," Nathaniel said.
"Why are you not telling me the truth? You clearly know that your father was my only friend, and the only person I ever allowed close to me -"
"That’s because I don’t want you to fucking interfere in my sister’s life! That’s what I was most afraid of! That she will open the portals of hell one day and you will notice her. She already has so much on her plate, I don’t want the demon lord lurking around her too, making her a prime target of all the dark witches, just like how my father was. Do you now understand what is going on?" Nathaniel said in a single breath.
The more the demon lord heard, the more shocked he became. Lord Ahriman’s cold facade immediately cracked, replaced with pure disbelief, his mind focusing on just one sentence.
"She is your sister? Does it mean she is my friend’s daughter? The daughter who was known to have been born still?" Lord Ahriman asked, his mind flashing all the images of Elliana tearing up in hell because she was scared, and how she shared how much alone she felt in this cursed world.
Lord Ahriman looked at Nathaniel, who seemed pained with the words he himself uttered and couldn’t help but stand from his place.
He grabbed Nathaniel’s hand to look into his emotions and what happened.
Nathaniel, who immediately noticed what this man was doing, tried to jerk his hand away, but his hell fire had already engulfed the two of them, making him hiss with discomfort.
"Nathaniel!" Pluto shouted, taking a step ahead, but Nathaniel’s hand stopped him from taking any action.
"I am fine," Nathaniel whispered, trying his best to not look into the demon lord’s eyes as he knew that as soon as he did that, the demon lord would see what he didn’t want him to see.
"Look into my eyes, Nath," The demon lord commanded, making Nathaniel grit his teeth and firm his head as he tried his best to avoid his gaze, making the demon lord grab his jaws and force him to look into his eyes.
The demon lord read his eyes as if he were reading a book at the speed of light, leaving the prince’s hand abruptly before stepping back from the man.
"Oh my poor boy, what have you gone through? What did you let that witch do to your sister?" Lord Ahriman said, the rare sight of the demon lord’s eyes going soft for him not going unnoticed by the dean and Pluto who quirked their brows.
"Does it matter? All I need is for you to stay away from me and my sister. Your friend who you used to cherish is gone. And you definitely don’t have any kids that you want us to befriend. So let your relationship with my father die with him, okay? Stop bothering us," Nathaniel said, and was about to turn around, an indication to the demon lord that he was leaving.
However, the words that the demon lord said next left him frozen in his place.
"Nathaniel, do you not understand why the powers that I shared with Taipan and have been shifted to your sister are still working? It’s because the bond that we formed, the treaty between the powers, is still alive," The demon lord said.
Nathaniel flickered his gaze at the demon lord. ’What did he say?’
"What do you mean?" Nathaniel asked.
"You are not dumb enough to not understand such a simple indication, Nathaniel," Lord Ahriman said before he extended his hand and opened his palm towards a random tree.
The portal back to hell started to open and Nathaniel quickly held the Lord’s hand.
"Lord Ahriman, please, what did you mean by the statement that the bond is still alive somehow?" Nathaniel asked.
Lord Ahriman nodded at him.
"It’s exactly what you think, Nathaniel. You have been suspecting this possibility for quite some time yourself. I am telling you this so that you can stop questioning the truth. It’s the ultimate truth that has been kept hidden from you," Lord Ahriman said before entering the portal and disappearing into thin air.
As soon as the demon lord left, both Dean and Pluto rushed to Nathaniel to ask him what the lord was talking about.
"He.." Nathaniel didn’t say anything. He just walked to one of the lakes and sat on his ankles, hiding his face in his palms to calm his raging heart.
’The bond is still alive somehow.
The bond that the lord Ahriman formed with his father to commend their friendship was still alive. It only meant one thing," Nathaniel’s fists clenched around the soil.
"My dad is indeed alive, Pluto. My entire life, Elliana’s entire life, Queen Azura’s entire life, and everyone’s life has been nothing but a complete lie. All our sacrifices, pains, loneliness in this world, everything started at one point, and that point has always been a lie," Nathaniel chuckled.
He chuckled so loudly that the vibrations of his sound made the upper surface of the lake tremble, a rogue tear skipping down his eyes.
"How am I supposed to tell this to a girl who has been suffering everything with a happy smile on her face that one day she would find a home where she would be loved? How am I supposed to tell her that the person she has been suffering all of this for in the name of protection was the one who caused her this much pain? Tell me, Pluto. Home am I ever going to face Elliana for blindly believing in Arizona and being an accomplice in causing her pain?" Nathaniel broke down, falling to his knees.
"Aaaaaaaaa!" Nathaniel roared, the pain inside his chest clenching his heart painfully.
Pluto felt bad for his only friend and gulped.
He wished, he wished he could take away some of his pain, but there was no use. No one could take away his pain. Not now, not ever.
