Chapter 328: The scent
Chapter 328: The scent
After getting her treatment, Elliana walked to the lab and looked at her chemicals with a sigh. She can’t be distracted by Mr. Marino or what happened earlier. She needed to concentrate here.
She sighed and lifted the test tubes, pulling out a few containers from the refrigerator.
Thankfully she called Glow just in time, and she stored the mixture in a low temperature where the chemicals won’t react uselessly.
If this worked, they’d have one of the best scents that she created, and this time the after smell would be a faint smell of soil, barely noticeable, which is the most common smell.
She was about to pull out the secret ingredients that she had asked Marcello to arrange for her when she heard some shuffling and gently pushed the ingredients back into the drawer.
"Elliana, can we talk?" Alcinder walked to her.
"Yes, what is it?" Elliana asked while sucking the chemical into the pipette lightly to an optimum amount before putting it into a container of 200 ml capacity.
"About what you said earlier, why were you lying?" Alcinder asked.
Elliana paused in her steps, ensuring she didn’t burn the test tube.
She placed the test tube in the holder before gently removing the tongs and placing it on the counter away from the burner before she turned it off.
"What do you mean that I was lying?" Elliana turned to him, her full attention on him now.
"You and I both know that you don’t love him or have fallen in love with him. You can fool anyone but me. If you were really in love with him, what was that day all about?" Alcinder asked.
"What day?" Elliana asked.
"Don’t play dumb, Elliana. You very well know what day I am talking about. The day you knocked out that soldier of his. Your words are quite contradicting. That day you almost sounded like you and him don’t get along well, and today you are falling in love with him?" Alcinder asked, and Elliana averted her gaze.
"I understand your concern, Alcinder, but I don’t see why you would be so offended about my love life. I think I have the right -"
"That’s because you don’t fucking love him!" Alcinder hissed as he grabbed her hand and forced her to look into his eyes.
Daniel, who was walking to the lab where he knew Elliana had gone to give her the ointment doctor asked him, paused at the door as he heard the commotion inside.
Though they were barely hushing, as a mayor’s son, his hearing was quite good.
He leaned against the wall as he heard them talking.
What was it that Alcinder knew about someday and Elliana was denying? When did the two get so close? Wasn’t Alcinder always stuck up about not interacting with her? Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"I don’t have to explain my emotions to anyone, Alcinder. I think I have the right to love anyone freely. Please leave me alone," Elliana turned around.
Alcinder looked at the back of the girl’s head and took a few steps back, leaning on the counter behind him.
He observed her. There was no way she was speaking the truth. He wasn’t in love with her or anything, but for some reason, hearing that this girl fell in love with a monster like him who can’t bring anything but misery to people around him, was unnerving him. It was making him mad.
He didn’t know he cared about her so much until now.
"How many times have I carried you in my arms and saved you? How many times have I bickered with you and had fun with you? If falling in love was so easy, why wasn’t it me?" Alcinder asked, shocking not only Elliana and Daniel but himself too.
Daniel wanted to walk inside and shake Alcinder violently to snap him out of whatever drug he was on, but Elliana’s next words stopped him.
"Because you never liked me, Alcinder. Everything you did to me was like a friend. Besides, who are you fooling? I know you love Samantha, and the only reason you are not with her or trying to stay away from her is because it’s a way of rebellion against your family," Elliana said things that Alcinder didn’t tell anyone, and he felt stuck.
He didn’t have anything else to say in the matter.
"H-how do you -" he started after a few minutes of silence.
"Because I have observant eyes, Alcinder. Do you think I don’t see you stealing glances at Samantha when she is laughing or how you get jealous every time I try to flirt with her?
Someone might think your eyes are on me, but I am at the receiving end and know where your eyes exactly stop. Those little glances while you talk to us, remembering to take her favorite strawberry smoothie every time we order things, I notice everything. So just do everyone a favor and propose to her," Elliana said.
Samantha, who was suspicious of Alcinder’s feelings and was standing at the other corner of the lab, heard what Elliana said, and her heart skipped a beat.
Was Alcinder really in love with her? Why- why did she not notice what Elliana was mentioning?
"You! How can you... Uh... Don’t mention it to anyone. I can’t have her get into the feeling that I love her or something. Let things go as they are," Alcinder grabbed Elliana’s hand, forcing her to look back at him.
Elliana smiled and nodded.
"It looks like we have a deal. You stay quiet about what you saw that day or how I knocked the youngest prince’s man earlier, and I will stay quiet about your feelings for her. Regarding why I lied to Daniel, it’s because I can’t hurt him more than he already is.
I am indeed madly in love with the youngest prince, but you don’t need to learn what kind of love it is or if it has any meaning to it.
I also know that he would never love me back, a human being like me. So let me stay happy with my one-sided love, okay?" Elliana asked, and Alcinder hummed.
"Then what are you waiting for? Get lost," Elliana scoffed.
"You! Don’t forget you are talking to the vampire council head’s son," Alcinder growled at her disrespect, and Elliana scoffed.
"Last time I checked, I don’t give two damn about it. If I really cared about death, I wouldn’t be falling in love with the devil. Go cry about it to your future wife," Elliana said, and Samantha blushed hard.
When she noticed their conversation was coming to an end, she stepped back, ready to leave when her gaze fell on Daniel, who was also eavesdropping.
Both of them looked at each other before smiling awkwardly and leaving together.
Elliana took a deep breath before she took out her phone. She leaned on the counter and looked at the photo of Mr. Marino, standing near the garden with his back to her.
She traced her hand at his stiff shoulders before smiling.
"Why is loving you so hard?" She whispered before sighing and getting back to work.
She pulled out the flower from the drawer that she had placed earlier and extracted the ingredients from it before going to the distillation unit.
After flaming the chemical on the burner once again, she poured the material into the container before adding crushed flowers and all the herbs she had collected earlier this week from near the forest, the main reason why she had gone there.
After meticulously working for two more hours and adding the necessary alcohols like ethanol, acetone, formaldehyde benzyl, and derivatives, she finally felt like she was ready to test the product.
The alcohol was burning her skin and wounds, but she just gritted her teeth. She has to complete this today itself.
She waited for some time to let the rest of the smell evaporate and leave the lab through the exhaust.
Once she was sure she could test it, she took a deep breath and used it on a scent stick before smelling it. It indeed gave the smell she needed, but what about hiding scent?
After testing it on herself with shaking hands and getting approval from Glow, who said she couldn’t smell her, Elliana wrote all the components and the amounts she used, collecting all the data in the computer file.
She divided the samples into three bottles. One to keep with her, one to send to Marcello, and one for later purposes, in case she needs it in an emergency or Marcello loses it.
She placed the pen drive with the information and scent sample in a small envelope and placed it on Glow’s desk.
"Give it to him as soon as possible. You already know where he is now. I will call him. No mistakes would be allowed, okay?" Elliana was finally done with her work and Glow nodded at her.
"You should take some rest," Glow signed to her, but Elliana just smiled before waving her hand in dismissal.
Glow left with Sasha since the laboratory time was over anyway, and Elliana placed her hand over her head, plopping on the chair.
She closed her eyes, thinking about what happened earlier.
She didn’t know if she made the right decision in revealing her infatuation with Mr. Marino, and if the person in question would really appreciate it, but she had no choice in the matter.
She sighed, ready to take a mini nap when she felt a swoosh of energy around her.
Elliana jerked her eyes open, her brows furrowing when she found herself inside what looked like an office.
"Are you ready for your first session, Elliana?" She heard a female’s voice, and she turned around, her gaze meeting with the familiar face.
